Nice review man, there's not many ToA reviews on UA-cam and yours is defenitively the best! The underrated game from what I called the "Localized Tales Holy Trinity" (Symphonia, Abyss and Vesperia).
Thank you! I'm a pretty big Tales fan (one of my top 4 series), so I like a lot of them, but ToA really hit me on an emotional and personal level. I need to play Tales of Destiny 2 though (actual one, not US Eternia title) since Destiny is my 2nd favorite.
Excellent review of not only my favorite Tales of game but one of my favorite games ever. Btw nice that you mentioned the backtracking. While I didnt notice it when I first played it on PS2 (probably because I was fanboying over how awesome I thought the game was) but I did notice it when I replayed it on the 3DS. It was a a little annoying.

I feel much the same as you, especially with the sentiment that tales games always have great characters, but abyss had an amazing story, as well.

+Stefan Homberger Haha, that is a funny coincidence because xeno/FF/Tales are my 3 favorite series, as well. I have actually not played any Shin Megami games but my girlfriend is constantly trying to get me to play Persona(and I should). Xenogears is in my top 3 favorite games ever, but I absolutely loved Xenosaga 1-3 too. Another series I have always loved is Metal Gear.
if anyone wants to know a easy way of getting grade for the grade shop 3DS: go to cheagle woods and go on the hardest difficulty you can PS2: go on the world map close to engave and st.bihna and also put it on its highest difficulty you can if you are in new game+ and got the x2 grade value from the grade shop and on unknown mode if you are first starting you will get around 3-5 grade if you can win the battles if you are later in the game and more powerful you can get 8-12 grade there is a item if you beat the ex boss SPOILER:Professor Nemblim you will get the blue dice the blue dice give you +20% of the grade you earn
I love a lot of the older Tales games (Destiny is my 2nd favorite), but Abyss was the pinnacle of the series for me. That's not to say the newer ones are bad (Vesperia especially), but I don't feel quite as connected to them as Abyss and back. Although, I do have to say that I have very high hopes for Berseria.
Stefan Homberger vesperia is actually a great addition to the series, battle gameplay, environment and graphics...... the only low points were the story/plot and characters...... same with graces.... cant wait for berseria too...... the graphics and environtment looks stunning, but the battle gameplay, I wish the bring back the MP system..... instead of the CC system.....
The most grounded and complete tales of ever, and one of the best JRPGs ever, the message it's also so fucking damn lovely and sad at the same time :) it's a game that has many teachings for life
some people say this is their favorite in the series, or at least from the PS2/GC/XBOX era... but all honesty... i find this my least favorite. the characters are so damn stubborn and selfish, more so then Berseria, my second least favorite.

legendia is my current favorite! after eternia, well I have them all but soon I will play all tales of games!

For me, this is my favorite in the series by a wide margin. Several spots higher than every other Tales of game on my Top 200 list.
