  • So about that tire! A few months back I blew up the front wheel on the CRF230F, and I needed to ride the next day so I had to find a wheel for it locally. I found an old XL wheel with the same axle diameter at a local wrecker, and bought it for $30. I adapted it to work on the CRF230F, and got it all installed. Then noticed I still had an old Bridgestone tire on it dated '91. I put air in the tube and it held! So I've just been running it and trying to destroy it. It's so dried out and stiff that it's actually kind of hard to knock the knobs off. But I'm trying haha.

    Torture Test Magazine is an e-magazine which documents, in fine detail, the stories of bikes subjected to a real-world reliability test known as "the torture test." In the magazine, the torture test is conducted on a bike until it mechanically fails so badly that it can no longer run. Why? Because bike reviews based on a few hours of test riding are not satisfying enough. We want to know exactly how reliable a bike is, and how it will eventually fail. Simply put, Torture Test Magazine brings you the world's most detailed reliability and cost of ownership reviews for motorcycles.

      I own an XR250R. It isn't as strong as my CRF230 down low. Both engines are pure stock but uncorked. The 250R is 25 pounds heavier, calculated from heavy duty fishing scale.
      The XR will not start once it gets too hot. On the other hand, the 230F is one of the most reliable kick ass bikes on the planet. In my opinion, It's the only trail bike that can be MX raced, at the same time be a killer trail bike. Its only drawback is the stock suspension.
      If there's a one bike that can do it all, it's a 230F.

      Must do mods, if you are taller than 5' 8" follow this list. Please find provided links below.
      1. uncork it.
      2. correct the suspension.
      3. Open the cock pit.
      *4. Be aware of ThumperTalk's 230f forum. It caters to guys in their 50's and 60's. Especially concerning Fork Suspension, they often give out the wrong directions for youth riders.
      1.Opening the cock pit allows you to ride 35% more aggressive. To do so, foot pegs must be moved back an inch. Contact Rick Ramsey. Links will be included.
      2. Toss out the stock rear shock immediately or at least have it re-valved. Bruce Tripplet will fix it. Likewise to the forks. (Thumpertalk forum has his contacts.)
      3. Be aware of the Geriatric riders in ThumperTalks forum. The old guys know engines building, however, they don't know much about suspension, especially forks. They prefer old school forks for soft trail riding, and they do not consider younger riders use this bike to race hares and hound and even motocross.
      So be aware they will guide you to 6 pound heavier XR400 forks, when CRF150R forks are lighter and offer the same strength as the XR400 forks.
      4. You can raise you the 230F a whole inch if you use the CRF150F dog bone. However, you must increase the wheel base by an inch, if you do this mod or else it will cause head shake.
      If you are a taller guy?...and afterward you mod the bike to be larger. It becomes a 100 time better than its smaller self.
      Good luck.

    • @MrIgottap
      @MrIgottap 2 роки тому

      @@shockadellick thanks for the info and contacts, I do like the idea of raising it an inch. I’m not huge, but still a bit big for the bike at 6’1” and 200lbs. Group racing isn’t really my thing these days since I have a family and job counting on me, too many guys willing to take you out to get ahead, but I do still like some snappy speed and want to hit some jumps without breaking my back and bike. So I’ll definitely be “uncorking” it soon and am very interested in beefing up the suspension as time and finances allow. I’ve already read up on the uncorking and I can do that myself as I’ve already done similar work to my street bikes and for friends. The suspension is another story, I haven’t studied that yet too much so I’m not sure what that involves. If it’s just a matter of switching out parts, I’m sure I can do it when finances allow. If machine work is involved, I don’t have the equipment for that and will have to find someone that does. Have never heard of “opening the cockpit” so I guess now I have some more homework to do, but I’m definitely interested and will see what I can find out about it. I do appreciate you taking the time to help a guy out with what you know and will be referencing back to the information you’ve provided. Thanks again man, have a great ride and a safe trip!

      Lol! Honest answer is I've had this bike since I was 13 so I just know exactly how that frame is going to react to a lot of stuff and that allows me to ride it beyond what people consider the limits of this bike (high speeds, whoops, jumps, that stuff). It's still wild for me, but I just know the wild reactions it's going to have to stuff.

And I remember all I wanted was a bigger bike, it was "too slow" Well years went by and I did what anyone guy whos ridden since they were 4 years old did... I went 450 class, thats when I learned the hard way that on most trails and technical courses the crf230 is faster than a 450 lol.. now days I'm running a Kawasexi 250 from the good old 90's, but I have to say I still miss that dam 230, It took such a beating I can't even imagine how many hours were on that thing when I sold it whatta tank lol. Nice riding! That bike seems almost XR ish. I'm starting to think there is definitely a difference in tire compounds other than just soft ,medium ,hard terrain with different brands.Ive seen 4-5 year old Maxxis pretty much disintegrate just from sitting in doors and 20 year old Dunlop's that look brand new. That high speed section looked good was that hero 7 or back to the 5?

    • @TortureTestMagazine
      @TortureTestMagazine  5 років тому +1

      The character of this bike is almost like "miniature XR650L" hah! Oh yeah, there is definitely a difference in the quality of a tire if you ask me. Like you said some will just turn to chalk over time. Others will hold up. My little 1984 Yamaha 50 came to me with two different brand tires on it. One was IRC brand. The other was an exact copy of the IRC, but some knock off chinese-sounding brand. Both tires from sometime in the 80's. IRC was a little older. IRC was still rubbery and I'm still using it. The knock off was chalky and I replaced it.
      For this video I'm using the Hero 7, but I disabled hypersmooth. I think I'm more happy with it turned off.

    • @TortureTestMagazine
      @TortureTestMagazine  5 років тому +5

      It's a super fun little shredder! I'd say about the same power as any other stock uncorked 230 out there. I don't have the crazy mods anymore because I ruined the engine and de-built the bike. Even has the original exhaust with the sound plug in it now so it's nice and quiet when riding around town :) The only thing I have on there that might be contributing some extra power is a different carburetor, but it's still a 26mm just like stock so it's really just adding better throttle response and not much power, if any. If anything I think it brought it back to the "uncorked" level that it would be at if I removed the sound plug from the exhaust. Having that sound plug in there really mellows out the engine. All in all I don't think I'd want to go back to a built-out engine. I was really thinking I was going to miss it, but after getting back into riding it I don't miss having extra power. I can still carry speeds that are just way over the top for such a little bike.

    Excellent video!! My daughter over 3 tour of Idaho(T1) trips logged 3000+ dirt miles on a crf230, that bike ROCKed. Many others we rode with had rocking 450s and had wheel spin city on many rocky hill climbs(I always cheat on a geared down KTM 530!). The crf230, wind it up and that low first gear will climb anything. She separated a shoulder one year, the bike never had any issues(and she dirt naps a fair bit, lol)

      Thanks, I've been practicing. The XR is chilling in the garage until I can find a good solution for a rear shock. It wore out a little too easily so I'm looking to go with a different shock altogether rather than go for round two of the same shock body that wears out easily. It's just been tough finding a swap because the linkage ratio on those years of XR is kinda odd. But I haven't put much effort into it. Haven't actually gone to the wrecker or anything yet to actual measure things out

      If you limit your expectations, it's fine. Fun to throw around just for kicks but the springy frame and short wheelbase really amplify things that want to throw you off the bike. And I've cracked the frame on this thing only weighing 140lb, so don't expect to go too crazy on it. From what I've seen, the frame always breaks in the same spot which is on the front downtube where the motor mount connects.

    Hey Jim, I have a almost stock 04 crf 230f. There is a bizzare problem with it ever since i dropped the bike in the back of my truck. It runs fine but when I try to go high RPM the power cuts out as if i'm letting go of the throttle. I took it to a bike shop and they rebuilt the carb but the same issue still occurs. Before i take it to another shop, do you have an idea of what the problem could be?

    • @TortureTestMagazine
      @TortureTestMagazine  5 років тому +2

      There are a couple things I'd check. Try running it without the fuel tank cap, or with the cap pretty loose. When a bike gets tipped sometimes fuel gets into the breather in the cap and can gum it up, and that will prevent the bike from running correctly. Also check all of the drain/breather hoses coming off of the carburetor to make sure they aren't pinched somewhere. It's a long shot but did the air filter get saturated with oil from being tipped? The crankcase breather allows oil to seep right into the intake when the bike is at an awkward angle. Spark cap didn't get knocked loose, did it? It's just hanging out on the side on this bike and can get ripped loose easily. Kill buttons on the handlebar will do funny things when they break, so check that out too. It could have been smashed in the drop. And this might sound dumb but is the throttle side grip slipping on the throttle tube? I'm sorry if this doesn't help, but those are some easy things I'd check before digging in to the bike to see what's wrong.

    • @TortureTestMagazine
      @TortureTestMagazine  5 років тому

      I don't know. It's probably an auditory illusion in this case I think. This engine isn't modified like yours is. This bike has an OEM corked up muffler so the bike is very quiet. The GoPro cranks up the audio gain to match. That makes it so you can hear a lot of other noise in the video. You even hear the rocks sloshing around beneath the tires in this video which I thought added a pretty surreal feel to the video
