it's awesome how big 1000xResist got, glad you're celebrating the team! I discovered at a conference I was speaking at that I served a few of the devs coffee somewhat regularly at the cafe I worked at before I had the funding to finish street uni x full time. Little did I know we were peers and contemporaries! Anyways i see them around pretty often and consider them my friends now :)
Frank and Jesse win the tag team Christmas intro item off! Merry Christmas guys! Favourite podcast I discovered this year, got me a through many a long work shift.
I love that the Lorelei Award section was the longest one of the three, but not because it took long to figure it out, you just had to celebrate it for a bit
You guys finally got me to pull the trigger on 1000xResist haha Also just started playing Lorelei and been loving it so far. Thanks for all the cool recommendations all year long!
My work always get me a Prezzy Card for Christmas and it's perfectly timed with your GOTY podcasts. I use it to buy as many of your recommendations as I can (those which aren't on Games pass) and Honestly so many of my favourite games have come from this. Of the top of my head; Homebody, Signalis, Immortality, Chants of Sennar and Still Wakes the deep. honestly I wouldn't have given many of these games a look in if not for your recommendations. keep up the great work!
i'm so so so happy to see more people finally picking up and loving 1000xRESIST. it is HANDS DOWN my game of the year, though even that label seems reductive at this point. it's probably one of the most impactful storytelling experiences i've had this decade. i look forward to more people discovering this "supernova" of a video game, as Jesse so aptly put it. a real supernova odyssey.
I'm going to wait to watch this episode until later this week since I haven't been able to get to 1000xResist yet, but I did finally get to Anthology today, and I just want to say that (very minor spoilers) the game more effectively communicated its stance on secrets than any other game I've played, and it did so at the VERY beginning of the game. The moment the game started in a very linear corridor, I went through the tedious process of turning around, saw some bears or something at the end, walked toward them, and the game played some applause sound, a curtain lowered across the screen, and the game closed itself. "Good job. You know how to check for secrets. Your reward is you stop playing the game. You don't need to bother with that anymore." In a game that has a lot of fairly open spaces that are simply decorative and where movement is slow and tedious, that's a critical thing to communicate clearly. Huge props on that.
I just started listening to the podcast recently and I like it but it feels like some of the Irish guys video game opinions feel like very conservative to me that makes me not want to keep listening. Like especially this criticism he had of anthology of the killer was so weird and reactionary like I can’t appreciate art that doesn’t vibe with my brand of toxic positivity. And the whole bizarre statement he made about always being underwhelmed by zines ( huh? Like you know there’s a lot of different kinds of zines right?) just some clueless opinions in my view.
I don’t know if Danny is being reactionary - simply because he is being introspective, and furthermore respecting the art, and simply saying it’s not for him. If he had been like “here’s how I perceive it, and that’s the way it is”, I think you would have an argument.
My wife caught me dancing around the kichen to the theme tune. She cant unsee that
Anthology of the Killer is like having a nightmare that inexplicably leaves you feeling refreshed

I can't believe nobody's said "fart nouveau."

Resistance is fertile? Is this anything?
1000 x Resist - i couldn't put the game down but i did not like the last few acts and how the story wraps up.

Danny is the greatest of all time give him another chance and you'll thank me in the future.
Danny's name is right there on the screen for you to use rather than just reducing him to "the Irish guy". Ffs.

Yeah. Danny's '90s timewarp lad humour/sensibility is the low point of a great pod.
It wasn't his greatest take ever ok. Guy was just having an off day. Lets not crucify him for one bad take. We all of us are human.
