A costume changes your behavior, just by the wearing of it. Just like you feel and act differently if you put on a nice set of clothes.
Also, there is a 'feedback loop' involved. It's been proven that if you smile, the physical act of moving your face muscles into a smile will effect your emotional state and you will feel slightly happy.
That applies to your clothes/costume, which are an extension of your body, and thus effect your mood.
Looney Tunes/ Merrie Melodies did a Bugs Bunny-Elmer Fudd cartoon about how just a hat can alter a person's (or wabbit's) character and behavior that is as true as it is funny.
"You're not in debt to the mob" I lost it 😂
Damn I lost it to
You haven't truly cosplayed until That One Thing rips/falls off/stretches/breaks and you have to rush back to your room or a repair station to sew/glue/tape/velcro it back on.
It's basically cosplay 101 and a "at con/last minute sewing/repair kit" are your semester books.
I learned this the hard way when a piece shattered and I had no glue. I walked to the nearest store which turned out to be hell of a lot longer then what I was told. If I known I would have drove there.
I love that this video comes up as I’m ready to start my first cosplay
Good luck!
You can do it!!
Tell us more!
Cool, what are you making?
Adam has also mentioned (in the past) that he has a full sewing kit in his cosplay/convention repair kit too..
Well, after seeing a quite physically large male cosplay as Black Widow, I'm inclined to say 90% mental 10% physical 😆
🤢🤮🤮🤮
@@TheIrishAmish I bet my dude was rocking that shit
ca glue and baking soda best thing i ever learned from you, i was able to repair a cast resign mask and it hasn't failed yet
Just fill your tape mannequin with expanding foam, it fills perfectly and doesn't stretch the shape at all
Especially if you use the fence post filler
As a prop and costume maker that does commission work, I have a couple things to add to a cosplay repair kit. For quick and dirty repairs I'd bring; zip-ties, fabric bonding tape (the type that doesn't need to be heated), and an oil-based silver sharpie. Because if you can't hide the damage, you can make it look intentional. I store it all in a large rolling make-up case. I bring the whole thing if I go by car, or just the top part if I fly.
Industrial strength Velcro is always a must for costume repair kits.
I’ve heard of using a long sleeved shirt that you cover in duct tape then cut that out and filling it with stuffing to make a cheap torso model.
I keep wanting to get into cosplay but god I wish I had space to work.
A shirt or gladwrap based mannequin are fantastic for a cheap personalised form.
You're probably thinking of the duct-tape dummies commonly asked by fursuit makers for sizing and fitting purposes.
I love that you mentioned how physicality and mentality of a character are so often intrinsically linked- I can't help but agree. Talked about leading body parts and how the costume can be enough of a motivator to really get you in the right headspace is very relatable. For me, performing as any creature on stilts had the very same effect amplified by being so out of proportion to everyone else.
Drag Adam, I'd die to see that.
😰
Same XD
very interesting as always- but was there an issue with the audio? It sounded overly bassy, and a bit blown out.
It said in the beginning that this was from a livestream so it’s probably the mic on his laptop
Drag... The dress maker part makes sense now.
Now I'm seriously intrigued by whatever alter ego Adam would unveil as his drag form.
Thumbnail looks like some obscure GTA loading screen for a Joker-esque bank robbery mission
Pay Day !
that physical v mental question is exactly what ive been trying to put into words
Sounds like creating your own robust dress makers doll would be a good One day build.
Literally all I've been waiting all my life for is seeing Adam Savage in full Drag. Yass Queeeeeen
Excited about meeting him at FanX in September. Yes, I have a photo op with him but I'm even more excited to try and spot him in cosplay!
That title + thumbnail combo makes Adam look like a serial killer and I am all here for it.
A baggie of baking soda is always a must wherever you go. I keep one in the glovebox next to the car registrstion.
Lol
I have a dress form that is made from fully movable wire triangles. It's almost like chainmail. You can open it on the front, put it on and adjust it to your shape. I don't know, if such things are still available, but these are as close to the perfect fit as possible...
PS: I am from Germany. Maybe it's a local thing..
duct tape bodyshape are the "to go" for having your measurements AND hot glue stuff "on you" without hurting yourself! we used that to make or "biker mice from mars" torso parts years ago!
but Adam, that's a whole workshop for some cosplayer! :D
isn't really related to this video but man, Adam gotta be the most likable person on planet earth, maybe only sharing that spot with Keanu Reeves. You're such a lovely person.
This video was only released yesterday but, I bet, Adam has already been offered several vintage, dressmaking manikins. 😁
Adams children are Thing 1 and 2 and his wife is a wonderful mimic ..
The Adam's family.. indeed!
I knew of a nice Adam-sized mannequin.....
Pretty sure his name was BUSTER 👤
I have never been to any "con" event b4, but my freinds have convinced me go to the geekd con in shreveport next month. What should I know ahead of time, and is there anyone else going to that?
The advice I always say is bring you’re own drink/food , plenty of money (sometimes more then you think) and if you can get a usb fan and powerbank , - why
since they charge you a lot for food and drinks, there’s Huge (not kidding) lines for that and the hole in the walls (card machines) and it can get very hot indoors with 1000s of people (best to get a backpack to store all that and keep anything you buy in )
@@lasarith2 good advice, but I would also recommend checking the rules on the con website. Some conventions do not allow backpacks. I would also say wear comfortable shoes. You will walk a lot if the con is big. Wear clothes you like. You may end up taking pictures with cosplayers, other fans, or talent that you want to like how you look. If have a particular fandom you enjoy, wear a shirt that or maybe include an Easter egg in your outfit that other fans will recognize. You may end up making some new friends in your fandom.
When it comes to buying things, whether photo ops, souvenirs, or merch, go with a budget and only bring that much cash. Don’t feel obligated to spend the whole budget either. Try to have an idea of what you want to buy. And when you buy, ask yourself if you REALLY want that thing. Try to picture it in your living space. Remember if you have buyer’s remorse, you can’t return anything to a con vendor. For some things like vintage collectibles, know market price and haggle. For art and craft, I personally consider haggling rude.
It may sound overwhelming. For a first con, maybe just enjoy the show and try to take in a panel or a parade.
Most of all, this is supposed to be FUN. Hope you have a blast.
I've not gone to that con but I bring my budget in cash. Typically I have 150$ for food. The con I go to is 4 days long and that's about good enough for food maybe a little extra left over. I usually budget for buying stuff at around 200$ - 300$. So I usually bring about 400+ in total on me. I usually have a plan for what I want to buy so typically I usually use 150$ for buying things I want and the rest becomes emergency money. However your budget may be different than mine. My convention is my only vacation so I have a years worth of money saved for it.
Definitely bring something to carry things in. Drink water and stay hydrated. Take a shower each day and wash/sanitize your hands! Con Crud is a yucky bug some people get at conventions/festivals and you definitely don't want to catch it or spread it. Have fun!
This was very informative I just found out about this channel and I am liking it already
I would love to see you build a falcor costume. I think the process would be fascinating.
The Dark Knight still holds the best opening scene, try and change my mind!

@@SophiaAphrodite Sophia, this is why you are the coolest.
Adam... I will ADD what I ALWAYS BRING on trips to Cons AND When I go on Vacations...
I have a small Canvas, Draw String bag with pockets that hold ALL of my "Leather Working" Tools, Needles, Various Threads and Cat Guts/Waxed and Linen Threads.
THEN to that I add the CA Glue and Kicker, EPOXY, HOT GLUE and Gun, Various Tapes, Some pieces of Leathers and Fabrics, and even some Sewer's Heat Bonding Interfacing, Wire and various CUTTERS and a nice, small, portable X-Acto/Blade Kit. Also some Velcros and I have even brought along a portable Sewing Machine!
I have a "FAV" one that has a nice, solid, Outer Case, and it travels with me to Cons and Re-Enactment Events ALONG WITH BOTH a THREE PRONG AND TWO PRONG EXTENSION CORD!
OH YES AND a Couple of "SEWER'S TAPE MEASURES and a RULER AND a COLLAPSIBLE, FLAT, FOLDING YARD STICK! MUST HAVES!!!
I can definitely see the value of tongue depressors in my phonocave I have water ice popsicle sticks I consume them regularly and save the sticks in quite a number of antique phonographs coming in the screws are rusted shut in the wood and when I take them out with a bit of hassle I nearly always end up with a gnarly hole that I then fill it with bits of stick and glue ready to sturdy receive a new screw.
If you're cosplaying Darth Vader, don't go around giving hugs. He force-chokes people, he doesn't give hugs and kisses.
Calling it. Next Con. Adam Savage as.... Mrs. Doubtfire.
Will you be bidding on any of the prop auction?. I keep my double sided sticky tape in a ziplock bag . What things do yuou put in sealed bags ? Love your work. I made copper rivets for a pirates chest. and today I made a tiny stainless steel key for a fairy door and riveted the escutchion plate.
Best question was the mental vs physical question and it didn’t really get dove into at all😭 so sad
Adam as Dorothy from Wizard of Oz.
Would plaster work if anyone knows? Like they use on broken arms and legs in hospitals?
Watched toll the END - great point!!!
Oy, I know you! :-)
@@nagranoth_ Quit following me around! LOL😜
@@GratuitousSets I'm not following you around, I'm just where the cool kids hang out ;-)
Hi Adam, hi everyone, " cool video good,
to see you just relaxing ", :)
An algorithmic cookie for that last bit.
If you use rebar tie wire. Comes in little spools.
My son did cosplay and the woman that accompanied him was a costume maker and she brought her sowing machine.
My Grandpa says that if it can't be fixed with WD-40 and bailing twine, it's done for.
That thing in the background? IT'S A MASK!
ADAM! Nice try hiding in the new Ghostbusters Afterlife trailer, just barely visible as the 4th thumbnail. I hope we get to see you explain the SAVAGE SCIENCE behind Proton Packs.
Am I the only one who is having problems with the sound quality of this video? It's like listening to a low bandwidth teams meeting...
Sewing kit and lots of safety pins!
Adam, Do you have the skills needed to make your own vintage male dress dummy? Would it be something you would ever consider making?
Do the drag Adam!
7:53 the dissonance is painful 😂
What do you mean by "Kicker" for use with CA glue?
A kicker is just something used to make the glue dry faster.
Kicker is a spray that causes the glue to harded almost immediately.
its a catalyst that makes the glue harden faster
Overpriced water spray can
Making the Iron Man costume
I legitimately didn't even notice that was Adam. If Adam reads this. Please tell me if you were in character when you took the picture. You were almost unrecognizable.
I want a video!
Would love to see you in Drag.
Did it myself for Halloween and had my friend pretty me up. She is a professional Drag Queen and I love her so dearly.
Turns out I looked like Jennifer Garner. 😂
It was such a fun night because of her. She really got me out of my comfort zone and it helped a lot.
Repair kit, don't forget the 'sewing kit'
anyone know where that joker cosplay in the thumbnail is from?
These questions have been asked and answered in previous videos...
Please colab with Trixie! Please please pleeease!
MAKE A WARHAMMER 40K COSTUME
Thought that was Keith Lemon on the video still...
What is the rc chassis for?.
100 percent mental.......
TOO EASY
He must have a personal caddy who's only job is to carry the repair kit. That's a lot of stuff.
The kits tend to stay in your hotel room. 90% of any kit is banned on the show floor
I like these but they are way, way to short..
Can you not see that freedom is slipping away Mr. Savage?
Good video :)
What should I do if I out grow my cosplay costume by 2 or 3 inches should I make a whole new one or lose the weight 😂
i NEeD A MeDIc bAG!
Cool!

Shouldn't it be "How much OF cosplay is physical vs mental"
The title makes sense without of
@@brown22sugar25 I guess it just sounds better in my head that way

I remember when I used to play dress-up. It was around the time that I watched mr dressup, I must've been seven
"Its a TRAP!"
Volume sucks
Righto... let me just throw these razor blades, multiple scissors, baling wire and miscellaneous chemicals in my carry-on bag, and I'm off to con! ;-)
Did you know that ball bearings are the best bearings in the shape of balls?
Im no cosplayer but super77 would be better than most of his suggestions. PL premium is a better option as well. Clearly none of these nerds know about construction grade adhesives.
Re: the repair kit, is about a quick and dirty fix or small patches to last the event and then be fixed later.
@@PheonixRise666 hot glue is a shit substitute for my two previous suggestions.
PL premium would be too messt in this use case and solvents in super 77 would lightly melt / damage finishes.
@@kevinprendergast5885 This is for a con. People need stuff that dries/hardens in *seconds* not hours. And spray adhesive is a different purpose than hot glue. The thickness of it is important.
