Brilliant stories told with insight and empathy. I used to watch Jim with Dick Morrissey, at the Bull and Gate in Kentish Town in the 80s. Later, towards the end of the 90s, I had the privilege of arranging a tour of Cyprus for Jim, with Gareth Williams on piano. Great guy and wonderful player.
Jim Mullen's music has been the soundtrack to my life. I love his phrasing. I remember one hot summer evening, I rode my motorbike down to the Half Moon in Putney to see Morrissey Mullen. They played Ronnie Laws' Nightbreeze. I was bowled over.
Thank you. Letting Mr. Mullen go on about his life was the best possible thing you could do with someone who has so much to say, says it so eloquently and with such modesty and humour. But hey, he's from Glasgow. And yes, please do have him back. Maybe have him talk about what he looks for in drummers and why he appreciates the likes of Ian Thomas, Ralph Salmins, Steve Ferrone and others he has played with. More insight into the Average White Band would also be great. You did a fine job with the drumming, And wow, your daughter sings wonderfully. Overall, a real winner of a video.
Many years ago (mid 80s) when I was an 18 year old bass player my band supported Morrissey-Mullen at a club in Greenwich. I was already a fan of them and it was a great honour to play on the same bill. A couple of months later, me and the guitarist from the band went to see them play. We were sitting in the bar before the show, Jim walked in and spotted us (I was amazed that he even remembered who we were!), said hello and bought us a couple of beers, sat down with us and chatted for a good hour about music. I remember he enthused about John Scofield (I think Still Warm had just come out), I asked him about a Mike Carr album that he'd played on, and he offered up all kinds of wisdom and knowledge. He was very encouraging and generous with his time and it's something I've never forgotten. Delighted to see he's still sharp and garrulous, and playing as well as ever. Lovely fellow, and a great interview.
This has to be the best thing I've watched in a long time. I'ts a joy to see and hear such talented musicians up close and in such a relaxed atmosphere. And , it was wonderful to hear Jim remanice - absolutely brilliant, loved every minute ❤.
Great video Andy. Really great to hear Jim's stories, he's such a UK treasure. Great playing too. I was very fortunate to have a long and fruitful relationship with Pete Brown, and I have two songs co-written with him on his last (sadly posthumous) album. He loved Jim, and always spoke highly of him. Great stuff!
Thanks a lot Andy!! I had the great pleasure to perform alongside Jim many years ago and recorded a couple of tracks which Jim shines on (as always). He told us the hilarious Bob Dylan story in the studio but it was even funnier hearing him recall it here. Keep up these most informative episodes please... Awesome work 😁
Seventeen minutes in and enjoying it very much. I’ve also enjoyed your comments on jazz/rock fusion which I discovered in the mid seventies when I came across a late night to show from Montreaux featuring The Crusaders & the GD/BC band . I bought the latter’s live album and discovered John Scofield and have been a fan of his ever since. Imagine my delight when I discovered a radio broadcast from the same band in 1976, the track East Bay must be one of funkyest things I’ve heard . Keep up the good work ❤
Fabulous session and interview with Jim Mullen! Tell Grace she's got a lovely voice, and tone, and her understanding of R&B Vocal Melisma is wonderful! Jim's a joy to listen to, both musically and in conversation, and he made an excellent point about Berklee "methodizing" Jazz. They were just starting to do that back in the '80s when I went to Cornish in Seattle, but Cornish was a very different track. Ever heard of the band "Oregon"? Several professors and guest musicians at Cornish came through that scene of Regional Fusion, and Free Jazz, among others. Bobby McFerrin was a guest speaker, for instance. The teachers wrote and developed their own curriculum, which meant that their ideas were at once practical and personal. James "Jim" Knapp wrote his own book "Jazz Harmony" which I still consider one of the most progressive practical material on Music Theory for Jazz I've seen.
Love the combination of interview and performance. And a great interview too. Thanks! (oh, and your daughter is definitely welcome back to sing again. A real vocal talent there)
Andy, Just a phenomenal little concert and fantastic interview! What a fascinating guy Jim Mullen is wow and he played with a lot of the greats. I was so happy that he had respect and so liked so many of the American jazz guys that he played with and oh my God and you guys open with’ Angel eyes ‘-one of my favorite Sinatra tunes and one that I am capable of playing on my acoustic piano amazing.! So great to see you doing what you love and your daughter is lovely and has a beautiful singing voice -again another one of my favorite songs by Stevie Wonder OK brother keep up the good work man do what you love. I’m telling you you’re gonna be one of the biggest podcasts soon enough,,, your friend from the states in NYC Potente 872….
Brilliant! Mr. Mullen is a wonderful guest. The band sounded quite nice, very accomplished and smooth. A nice performance by the guest vocalist, too. Thank you!
Andy Thank you so much for this great video and what a joy to see Jim Mullen. Saw him very many times at the Half Moon with Dick Morrisey and at the Bull’s Head in Barnes. His telecaster carried all before him. Very nice man too. Kudos sir !
Absolutely wonderful Andy....... Loved the stories from Jim.....what a career...... One of your best so far Sir!! And your daughter has a really nice jazz voice...wow!!!
Fabulous video Andy, great to hear the band and the interview... best thing on your channel thus far. Interesting to hear about how we Brits are not as open to each other as the Americans. I am mostly playing gypsy jazz but sometimes dep on banjo in a trad band, at one gig I started playing gypsy rhythm for a clarinet solo and all sounded great, the clarinet player loved it... but after the gig I was taken to one side with the clarinet guy and told off for straying out of the trad rules. And don't get me started on how jazz is becoming the preserve of educated posh boys with nothing to say... Loving your channel, very inspiring, thanks!
Just what I needed after a long work week. What a great vibe to take into the weekend. Great job by everyone, that sounded wonderful. Beautiful singing by Grace!
When your daughter came out we were not expecting that full mature sounding voice…WOW!!! She knocked it out of the park. Can’t wait until the full concert.
Thanks a million - that was tremendous: both insightful and honest. To this day, Cape Wrath is still one of my all-time favourite albums. Andy, your content is getting better and better all the time.
This is bloody brilliant, exceeded all my expectations, really great studio sound. I usually just watch on my phone but I've Bluetoothed this to my stereo. More videos like this please 👍🏼❤️👍🏼❤️
I had the pleasure of seeing Jim in my local pub The Woodman here in North London. What a great guitar player he is. If you get the chance go and see him you won't be disappointed.
Fantastic.. Jim is a genius. Great drumming. Loved the Robbie Macintosh stories. I live in Dundee and he is a forgotten but respected musician. Beautiful version of the Stevie song 👍❤️
Just got to the end. No one has mentioned Grace! Love her lower register! Keep singing Grace. If you want to. But don’t do it just to please dad hahaha.
Does Jim have a biography out? What stories he has to tell.... wow! The playing was great everyone and I think Grace has a future if she wants to pursue music professionally. This video is officially in my Top 5 Andy videos all time! I may even start listening to jazz (did I say that out loud?) Thanks to all involved, it really made my day!
Brilliant interview Andy, you must definitely get Jim back for another session, he's such an interesting talker and guitar player obviously. "What fucking voice" had me howling with laughter. I'm also impressed with your jazz chops too Andy, I love that style of drumming, it reminds me of people like Ed Thigpen. Your daughter Grace was superb, she managed to capture all of Stevie's sound and phrasing. I'd like to hear her sing more. A star in the making maybe.
Lovely to hear Jim play again. Must be over 10 years since I I saw him play (I think at the Vortex). Glad to see he is still young in spirt. Enjoyed the duo album he recorded recently called Duality with my good friend Tom Remon. Such a lovely man. Great to see you getting some concerts on the go at your arts centre Andy, look forward to many more.
What a wonderful treat to wake up. Definitely burning this to a CD for our dining pleasure!. A great performance by all, incredible production. Kudos to all for this gift! ❤
Just lovely. I'm copying this to Rick and telling him to get in touch. This has me remembering a sweet TV series Oscar Peterson made for Canadian TV in the 70's/80's is. Oscar Peterson and friends. Great music, great chats. I can not find it anywhere and I have really really looked. Keep up the great work Andy. This sort of vid takes a load of time to achieve but crikey, it is worth it. Hi from NZ.
I loved those shows and they are a big influence on what I do, and why I love Jazz. This video cost me, and a lot of people donated their time to making it and it is performing the worst of any video I haave done in the last two weeks, it's a shame really...
Really enjoyable video, great anecdotes and playing. I've shared it with jazz friends on Facebook, so hope that gets the numbers up a bit. It's a great thing to do. The sound quality is fantastic.

Nice tone on Andy's kit, though the brushwork wasn't picked up too clearly. I initially wasn't too excited about this ensemble, but I kept it on as I enjoyed my weekend off. Mr Mullen's playing is deceptively clever, playing close to the hook while managing to expand on the various intervals and rythmic complexities from the rest of the band. Nice also to see Andy being humble and a bit star-struck, especially after his earlier videos about how over-rated people like Neil Peart were. The interview section was wonderful. Mr Muller has had an amazing life. Great to hear from him

Great to hear a brilliant musician-say that Bob Dylan can’t sing ! I bloody loved hearing that!!!!
This was excellent!
Beautiful playing!! Such an interesting interview with Mr. Mullen!
Wow, this is one of your best videos. Great band and Jim is so full of history!
And a bit of a potty mouth. 😂 🎉
Glad you enjoyed it
Along side your favorite biscuits, this is my favorite video of yours. Well done.
The best thumb picker there is!
Great one Andy. Jim is a legend!

Excellent performance!! I've never heard Jim before, what a player!! Also, hilarious. Thank you, Andy!! 🙂
My pleasure!
Superb and the bonus of. Grace. Excellent piece of work here Andy.
Glad you enjoyed it
Brilliant video. Well done everybody.
Great sound and lovely playing all round. Awesome session. I'll come back for the interview.
Lovely! JM’s playing with Dick Morrisey on Cape Wrath (I cannot find that LP anywhere!) was a huge influence on me. His timing is to die for.
What a wonderful video, Andy, with great stories and playing: Jim's a humble giant and Grace can REALLY sing - you must be very proud of her...

Thanks for listening

thanks for coming...what a night!
Great playing on the drums Andy
Brilliant. I loved Jims anecdotes and I hope you can find more late middle aged musicians with stories to tell.
Wow wow. This is how you interview a musician masterclass. Watch and learn Beato.
Extremely fantastic. And a nice way to spend my Saturday evening 👌🏼😎
Great format, Andy. More of this, please!!
Lovely tone beautful playing from Big Jim great organ/keyboards from Wendy pulsing double bass from mr Chan. Andy in the groove man mellow man...

@mikeconway2383 Are you the drummer Mike Conway?
wow - that phrasing comes from a lifetime of really 'understanding' - and he speaks so insightfully.
Bloody great guitar playing !❤❤❤
Awesome playing! Love your grooves, Andy.
Wow ... great grooves and coolness du jour Andy. Shoutout to the group, thanks for the relaxing sets. Kudos to Jim (and shades of Wes). Not as familiar with Jim's work as Montgomery's but finger work is a lost art. Appreciated Jim's account of not seeking a 'proper' teacher that would have corrected his finger style. Important message to today's upcoming youth and the future of music.
Huge shoutout to Grace's debut on the channel. Booming voice with obvious future aspirations ... guide well Andy. Interesting classic choice of a piece ...
Hope to hear more ...
Amazing🙌
Love this band! All excellent musicians with great feel! ♥

Really great gig. Jim Mullen inherited Wes Montgomery’s right thumb. He gets a tremendous amount of music out of that single digit.Your daughter is a very talented young women. Jim Mullen is great, I love his playing, nice to see him on your channel.
Great interview and awesome playing all round
When I saw Jim Mullen in the topic I thought, "Nice! Then maybe we'll see Tristan on drums." But then I saw Mr. Edwards ominously hovering around the drums, and remembered he's a drummer... Still, very nice to hear this too!
Great music and lots of honesty!
So honest I thought he was Aussie. Accent (Scotland vs Australia) sounds kind of similar too. Cheers from 🇧🇷
Great video. You can't beat live music. But Jim's stories about the New York music scene in the mid-1970s come a close second.
I saw Morrissey Mullen in 1982 when they supported Shakatak at the Palais de Danse in Nottingham. I adored Shakatak who were just hitting the big time but as a leary 18 year old I was disappointed when Morrissey Mullen came on stage, I'd never hear of them and wondered what on earth these older guys were doing supporting a young upcoming jazz funk act. How wrong I was ! Morrissey Mullen were fabulous, I can't remember any of the tracks they performed apart from a cracking version of Stevie Wonder's hit "Do I do". Who knows? I just know I'm in a better mood than I was at the beginning. And I was in a pretty good mood at the beginning, already.
C’mon you lot - let’s have some appreciation for the singer 👏👏👏👏
When i first started playing guitar i was a thumb picker and thought it was a bit naff until i discovered many of the jazz greats play that way like Wes George and Jim
Like the careless whispers around 3.15. He might have nicked that from Guthrie Govan who occasionally chucks that in his playing.
This format reminds me of Jools Holland but extended.
Nice tone on Andy's kit, though the brushwork wasn't picked up too clearly. I initially wasn't too excited about this ensemble, but I kept it on as I enjoyed my weekend off. Nice also to see Andy being humble and a bit star-struck, especially after his earlier videos about how over-rated people like Neil Peart were.
The interview section was wonderful. Mr Muller has had an amazing life. Great to hear from him
