- Follow University of Arizona PhD students Caden Howlett and Chance Ronemus up the eighth-highest mountain in the Andes (Cerro Mercedario, 6720m). The purpose of this expedition was to sample a vertical transect for low-temperature thermochronology, which will ultimately inform on the timing of Andean mountain building. Please reach out with any geology-related questions and I hope you enjoy the video.
Our work is part of an interdisciplinary effort to understand the geologic evolution of the Andean mountain belt (TANGO; the “Trans ANdean Great Orogeny”). Funding for this research is provided by the Frontier Research in Earth Sciences (FRES) program and the National Science Foundation (NSF).

These videos are cool! I feel like there is not many Geologist who record their day on the field. Very nice!
Thanks Nicholas. I agree. I'm hoping this videos can serve to entertain and help aspiring geologists see what it is like to do field geology, graduate school, etc.
@@cadenhowlett Very nice!
Dude! You guys are warriors! Another great video, my friend. Fingers crossed that you guys get great results with those samples.
Thanks Jacob, as always! I'll keep you posted on min sep results hehe
Geologists you are brave people estounding the knowledge of PLANET EARTH 🌎🌍🌎🌍 Thank GOD you are alive
Your videos are truly inspirational. Thanks for the solid content!
Yo that means a lot thanks for coming through!

So fun to see through your eyes. Thanks for the effort you make to bring your experiences to us. Loved it. And congratulations on the summit and on your successful field work.
Just watched this again. I love the sense of humor that goes along with the less than desirable menu. Not to mention the physical exertion. Thank you for sharing. It really is amazing to feel like part of the journey.
Great video!!! They just keep getting better and better!

Great content. Quite Entertaining, Cade.
thanks Kev! having fun learning how to edit video
What is the bureaucracy like to transfer the rock samples from Argentina to the US? I really like the fact that you thanked the mountain - it was very "Inca" of you.
Shipping from Argentina was very easy for us thanks to our colleagues in Mendoza. They wrote us a letter describing the kind of work we are doing (most importantly, that the samples have no economic value and are not related to mining in any way). That letter is attached to each shipment and allows the samples to go right through customs with ease. Believe it or not, Chance and I shipped our samples on a Wednesday and they were 30 feet from my office in Arizona on Friday. Two days. It blew my mind haha
Well done to you Geologists
yea thanks for the content
Yaa dog hope you enjoy the vid
Just subscribed my dude. Trying to get you to 1,000
Thanks homie

Hello, I am Victor and I am thinking of climbing this mountain (Cerro Mercedario) and I would like to know some things about the climb, please answer the following questions.
Did you use donkeys? Do you know how much it costs to rent a donkey?
What city did you rent the car from and how much did it cost?
Is it true that you used the car to Laguna Blanca, from there the ascent started by foot?
Hola Victor. We did not use donkeys. We drove straight from Barreal to Laguna Blanca (i think we parked at about 3300m). From there it is just a matter of taking your time up the camps in order to acclimate. You can pack relatively light for 8-14 days total depending on your health. We did it in eight days which was pretty fast (probably as fast as I would want to do it in order to reduce the risk of altitude sickness etc). We have a friend in Mendoza who rents us their personal vehicle for about 60USD per day (but we rent it for months at a time). If you fly to Mendoza, rent a car there, and drive to Barreal (stay at Don Lisandros!), then drive to Laguna Blanca you can start on foot from there! It is a big beautiful mountain.

Super sir ,, u guys doing well 👍. I'm a geology student of 3 Rd year from India . Is any opertunites for us in ur country to study masters...
There are lots of opportunities for international students to do MS and PhDs in the states. Most universities have resources for prospective international students to gain information (e.g., international.arizona.edu/iss)
WOW I am amazed food is the most important thing
my dream job
All this PLANET EARTH 🌎🌎🌎 was one
Why are you building a little rock wall around every campsite, wind?
Yeah, primarily protection from the wind. Our trip was remarkably calm--the camps are pretty exposed and the wind can easily reach 100km/hr. We got lucky!
When I see South America and Africa straight away i think GONWANALAND
SAVE PLANET EARTH 🌎🌎🌍 this is real this is no laughing matter
