      Same here! I've been giving them away to friends and relatives so I can eat from their trees since I don't have enough space. I have 9 varieties right now and I've been holding myself from getting more!

    I purchased a brown turkey fig from lowes , I'm doubting that's what it actually is... the figs didn't turn brownish purple color like they're know to do when ripe . They stayed green and inside was very much like yours and very delicious . But with all the varities of figs that there is , no telling what it could be!! Although they are very delicious !!

    I think this might be a variety that one of my neighbours grow here in the Netherlands. It is green, big, super sweet and I think it is the best fig that I`ve eaten.

    I think 'Dessert King' is the original spelling,…. though yes I realize 'Desert King' has been standard spelling,… but I think that was just a spelling mistake. This fig is not for desert climates, such as Coachella Valley.

    Beautiful! I live in Southwest WA and just found this fig variety marked down at Ace for $4 each! Grabbed a couple and can't wait to get them in the ground. Glad to see you're having great success with them.

    Ben, love the videos. Just found you on you tube. In Zone 9, have Celeste, LSU Gold, Giant Brown turkey (2), Banana, Italian black, Texas Giant Blue fig. I buy figs at the farmers market every season so I started growing figs about 3 years ago. Every time you have tasting, I want to buy another fig tree. No fruits to date, but expect plenty this season.

    I have a DK in Phoenix and it ripens off the main crop every year. The breba crop is more brown inside, whole my main crop is red. I think it may be due to the heat. The tree is doing great.

    Here in Florida people cut the fruit bearing branches off as soon as the last fig is picked, then the plant puts new branches on vigorously and the we get a 2d Breda crop.

    You didn't happen to mention how old your small tree was????? Also, you have trimmed it as a single trunk tree. A video from the Seattle Fruit Tree Society says you should trim Desert Kings as a multi trunk bush. What do you advise and why???? Also I have found most growers (on UA-cam) keep their trees cut back to a certain height to allow ease of harvest (Not the Seattle Fruit tree group) What do you advise. I am located in Montesano area, so closer to the coast than you. Any other advise you may have will be appreciated. First year grower of figs....... thank you.

    Hey Ben! Great video! I have several Desert King fig trees but none are red inside like yours. Any idea what is the source of your tree? Mine came from Rolling River a few years ago and are over 7' tall. I'm trying to locate a nursery that sells those that are red inside. All of mine are amber. Can you recommend a nursery? cheers and keep up the good work!

    • @BenBSeattle
      @BenBSeattle  7 років тому

      Strange they should be red. Mine came from a local grower off of craigslist a long time ago.

    • @queencitygardener7109
      @queencitygardener7109 7 років тому +2

      Ben B. As a matter of fact I do have Brooklyn White. However, White Triana is a heck of a lot better and 10 times sweeter or Votata is another of my favorites. I have a lot of figs but what I'm switching to are local finds in upstate New Jersey and New York.

    • @BenBSeattle
      @BenBSeattle  7 років тому

      I bet there's some great hunting ground for figs in those areas.

    • @queencitygardener7109
      @queencitygardener7109 7 років тому +1

      Ben B. I'll set you an air layer this spring if you want. Just pay for the shipping. But White Triana is the sweetest fig I've ever eaten. Votata and Peter's Honey are not far behind.

    Didn't bother to eat the skin this time? Looks really sweet and juicy as you say, but I don't think I'd like my figs that sloppy. Would it be a little firmer but just as sweet if picked a day or two sooner?

      yeah they werent washed yet lol. DKs taste better at this consistency.

    • @RedfishCarolina
      @RedfishCarolina 6 років тому

  • @EdPosey
    @EdPosey 8 років тому

    They look so good!
    But what I don't understand is, that you say in hot summers the main crop ripens but it is not as good.
    DK is known to be a San Pedro type fig, so to get the main crop you need to have the fig wasp.
    But there is no fig wasp in Seattle?!? Cheers mate

    • @BenBSeattle
      @BenBSeattle  8 років тому

      the main crop needs to caprication to ripen. but last year there were trees that ripened their main crop oddly enough. most likely because of the hotter than usual summer.

    • @EdPosey
      @EdPosey 8 років тому +1

      +Ben B. But that would mean those trees were not Desert King and from the San Pedro type.
      Only a hot summer won't make the wasp unnecessary.
      It is impossible!
      there must be something wrong... ;-)

    • @BenBSeattle
      @BenBSeattle  8 років тому +1

      they definitely do not taste as good and look drier on the inside but it's still edible. Check out the blog post from last year. seattlegardenfruit.blogspot.com/2015/09/main-crop-on-desert-king.html

    • @EdPosey
      @EdPosey 8 років тому +1

      +Ben B. That is weird.
      As beeing a San Pedro, the figs should drop prematurely...

    Do you need pollinating insects?

    • @_xO_Ox_
      @_xO_Ox_ 5 років тому

      Desert King is a San Pedro type, it means it will produce brebas (that never need pollination) but no main crop unless the blastophaga is present.

      I grow it in zone 6a but the trick is to bend it to the ground in late fall and bury it in a shallow trench. Uncover in spring. This can be done with any fig to make them thru winter.
