Great list, great intelligent reviews. Michael Pollan--Have a couple on my shelves and need to get to them. All the Beauty in the World sounds so good. The audio is one I will be looking for. If you like art woven into a story I would so recommend What I Love by Siri Hustvedt. fiction about an art critic and an artist--contemporary.
I've never heard of What I Love! Thanks for the recommendation, I will check it out! I hope you enjoy All the Beauty and honestly you can't go wrong with any Michael Pollan book!
Ah I was waiting for this video and I KNEW I’d be tempted to add all books on my TBR - your reviews are so insightful and intriguing! I’m starting with Say Nothing and Trust to add to my list 😊
I absolutely loved ‘Ghosts of the Tsunami’. Incredibly moving and told with great compassion and respect. I really admire how the Japanese handled their personal losses with such dignity and grace. Thank you for reviewing and selecting this book as one of your favourite reads. This book has certainly stayed with me since I read it over 3 years ago.
Yes - totally agree on the compassion and respect part! I thought it was such a unique read, not just about the disaster but how individuals (and society) picks themselves up. Have you read Perry's other book (earlier release) - People Who Eat Darkness? I haven't picked it up yet, but I'm eyeing it
Aah that’s very interesting you should mention his other book. I have not read it but know all about this case. I knew and worked with the young lady that went missing. I followed the case very closely in the UK throughout her disappearance. I have seen the recent Netflix documentary and will definitely get a copy of his book.
Your mention of Caravaggio makes me really want to recommend 'Rembrandt's Eyes' by Simon Schama. It's an unmatched book, a dual biography of Rembrandt and Rubens; a truly inspiring analysis of their paintings; and a sensory insight into Dutch life at the time. I'm gonna track down Caravaggio along with quite a few others on this list.
I am also here from @abookolive. I absolutely loved All the Beauty in the World! Just recently saw the Botticelli drawings exhibit at the Legion of Honor and want to take a trip to NY to The Met.
All the Beauty was such a good read! Always happy to hear others liked it too. Gosh I just looked it up and I think I missed that exhibit - I see the billboard advertisements for it on my commute home every day from work. I hope it was great! The Met was wonderful to wander and get lost in! Thanks for watching and commenting!
We have very similar reading styles as a bunch of these are either on my TBR or have already been read by me. I'm always excited to see the Caravaggio book being mentioned as it's one of my favourites! I'm adding 'Ghosts of the Tsunami' to my TBR...I'm not Japanese, but I lived and worked in Iwaki city just south of the nuclear power plant so the earthquake had a huge impact on my city. Not sure if I'll be to get through it because one of the schools I taught at was by the sea so this hits a bit too close to home, but I will definitely give it a try~
Yes, Caravaggio was so good!!! Do you have any other art history books you recommend?? Would be super intrigued to hear what you think of Ghosts, if you do end up reading it! Thanks so much for watching!!
@@audreyapproved I read Van Gogh: The Life by Steven Naifeh and Gregory White Smith a couple of years ago in preparation for a visit to the Netherlands, and that book is a CHONKER. It goes into every single little details of his life and work, what he read and what he said (thanks to all the letters saved by his brother). So if you like Van Gogh and don't mind huge detailed books, that one is pretty good! Otherwise, most of my art books tend to focus more on the art as I like to do master studies. I do want to read the Da Vinci biography you mentioned, as well as Standing in the Sun: A Life of J.M.W Turner :)
Okay that is the Van Gogh one I am eyeing! Actually my Dad and I already comitted to reading it for a book club we have later this year 😅😅@@whitebirdart1696 good to know heads up re: length, I did see that the audiobook was 40+ hours. Never heard of Turner (even his paintings), thanks for putting me in the loop!
@@audreyapproved Turner is my favourite artist, tied with Caravaggio! I highly recommend you look into his work someday. He was way ahead of his time with his painting style.
I made it about 30% into Say Nothing and never came back to it but it’s definitely on my radar to finish now!! Actually, so many of these titles are now on my “want to read” list. You have such an eloquent way of speaking about books!! Great video!!
Okay fun fact - in like 2018 I read like 8% of Say Nothing and then put it down b/c I couldn't focus on all the threads at the time. So it might work better for you a second time around - or not! and that's ok too! Thank you!!! xoxo although... I do write some bullets down beforehand...
Here from @abookolive. Such an intriguing list! I've been thinking about Trust for some time, so I might reach out for that sooner rather than later. Thank you!
Sounds like a wonderful reading year!! I have been anticipating reading Trust and now I am absolutely going to prioritize this year after hearing your thoughts :) I loved how Piranesi slowly revealed itself as I read it so your comparison was the perfect thing to hear!
I have been waiting for this video from you! I am so happy to see it! All Quiet on the Western Front was one of my best reads of the year as well. I love Patrick Radden Keefe. I am so glad you liked Say Nothing. I can never put down one of his books once I pick one up. I already have All the Beauty in the World on my TBR thanks to your recommendation! I am adding Ghosts of the Tsunami right now to the list.
Wonderful reads!! I added Ghosts of the Tsunami and A History of Loneliness to my TBR. You've also encouraged me to read Trust this year. It's on my shelf and I'll make sure to make time for it.
Hi, Just passing through because I have been watching all the favorites of 2023 videos. But since you asked, i think my favorite book of 2023 was The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi. The language was visual enough to read lke a pirate movie. And I loves me a pirate movie.
I was thinking of reading All Quiet on the Western Front for my German Entry! but all the other book sounds good, especially trust since I loved Piranesi!
That's a great choice!! Although there were a few options that looked really good! for Germany! and yes, if you enjoyed the reading experience of Piranesi, you'll hopefully enjoy Trust too!
I remember loving All Quiet on the Western Front in high school. Might be due for a reread. Ghosts of the Tsunami is on my TBR but too sad for me right now. I'm happy you loved it and hope I will too. I'm going to prioritize A History of Loneliness this year. I've owned it for years and am excited to get to it. Happy new (ish) year!
Oh yeah, Ghosts is definitely one to be read in the right mood! But it's such a good piece of nonfiction! And yessss you can read A History of Loneliness and I will get to The Heart's Invisible Furies this year!
Omg/oh no you’ve got me wanting to read literally all these books 🙈 love everything you said about every book but definitely 2024 must be the year i discover/finally get around to reading patrick radden keefe. Great vid as always Audrey! I always look forward to your best of the yr videos.
Yes!! The narrators are also excellent for PRK books but the Say Nothing narration was my favorite (or I just have a thing for Irish accents). Thx you as always. Can't wait for yours!! no matter the length hehe
Hadn't heard of any of these - looks like the first two are thrillers which I'm not super familiar with but For the Most Beautiful looks like something I'd pick up!
Thanks for recommending The Dreamt Land previously. I finished it yesterday. It was a great narrative history. I can appreciate that it finished just as Trump was campaigning for 2016, and just as the most recent drought ended.
I am so impressed by your wide-ranging reading. Your curiosity is boundless!
Ohh this was facinating!!! I love how you review books and these are almost all new recommendations to me so that's amazing!!!!! Great wrap up!
I love the way you enunciate, listening to you speak is relaxing.
Yes! 🙋♀️ Also enjoyed All the Beauty in the World.
It's such a good one!
