I am an old man of 76, my Father flew the C-47 in W about Market GardenW2, at D-day, and Market Garden also the last jump into Germany. He always said Monty should have been cashiered after Market Garden. But due to politics he wasn;t.

Years before Market Garden Britain went de facto bankrupt and was massively in debt to the US. Britain needed the war to end quickly and Market Garden offered that promise, so in that sense, it may have been worth a shot. But it was always risky and there were far too many working parts that needed to work on time for it to succeed.

Monty wasn't cashiered after Market Garden because he won more than he lost. From memory the last British General to never lose a battle was Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington.

This operation was poorly prepared. This greatly increased the risk of Montgomery losing. But the biggest filth is that he blamed the Polish general Sosabowski - the commander of the 1st independent parachute brigade - for the defeat. The unit of which was dropped in installments with delay, deprived of heavy equipment and yet, with improvised means, it moved its soldiers across the Rhine River under German fire to help the British in Anhem, and precisely in Oosterbeek. It was unforgivable crap. Especially that during the operation, Sosabowski, at the commanders' meeting in Valburg, presented a plan on how to save the entire operation. But the British had already decided to end it.

A little detail that I love about the C-47 in IL-2 is that when you're in a combat zone where flak or fighters might be expected, your copilot actually puts on his flak helmet like you can see
When Taff first looks at him he has the classic cover on, but after the drop has commenced and Taff looks in his direction you can see he has put his flak helmet on

I love Medal of Honor: Airborne. To this day it remains one of my favorite games, even despite the creative liberty they took with the history it is set around. They would have never jumped directly into the city of Nijmegen like that, but I understand they made the jumps into urban areas in the game for time constraint reasons.

@@duglife2230 It sucks that we are in a video game dark age and having the humanity in the violence that brothers in arms had especially with confines of small unit tactics on ps2 and early ps3/360 technology i wonder if they would either follow up on baker's personal story through the 101st through the Ardennes, Belgium and the alps basically stealing from the story of band of brothers like the original games or what i fear they would do is make generic mediocrity like most fps games of today and show sanitized war and violence avoid the holocaust and the things that people had to go through in the ETO using video games not as art reflecting life but instead use the franchise for a cheap derivative cash grab something like you would see from 95% these studios today.

Been to the Ginkelse Heide last year for the Market Garden memorial.. From Veterans to parachutists, lovely to see.. The best thing of that whole day was to see the C47 who actually flown in the Market Garden campaign, fly over the Ginkelse Heide yet again, 78 years later to drop guys from the Parachute Group Holland. After the C47 the newer planes and airborne troops went, well over 300 paratroopers and I believe around 20 planes, was an amazing sight to see with some low passes too!

Great video! Thank you for doing this video on the C-47.
Not that it will happen, but the developers should correct the exit of the paratroopers. US paratroopers exit the aircraft and form a bit of an L-shape until the chute opens. They don't tumble like aircrew bailing out. Paratroopers tumbling like that have a significantly higher risk of getting tangled in the chute and suspension lines if they're tumbling.
Retired paratrooper here. Airborne All the Way!!

I'm currently reading Cornelius Ryan's 'A Bridge Too Far'. Thanks to captured Market-Garden plans the Luftwaffe scraped everything it had and was poised to wreck the airborne drops. Fortunately fog and weather delays postponed the first drops. However by the second drop the flak and Luftwaffe fighters took a heavy toll on the C-47's. One piloted by a Commander Lord was on fire but he circled his plane around until all of the supplies were dropped. He was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross but sadly the supplies fell into German hands who'd overrun the dropping zones. Market Garden was plagued with problems as soon as the first airdrop hit the ground.

    This was an amazing video
Hope to see more like this
A few years ago, my then partner and my home town were linked to Market Garden and something even more amazing.
It turns out her grandfather was a Scottish paratrooper who’d been involved in Market Garden. Not long after he got home, he was ordered to participate in a hugely secret mission.
There was a Polish drunk who lived in my home town, Dumbarton, but he was an expert safecracker (I have no idea).
I tell this story kinda third hand as my partners grandfather took his oath of silence very seriously and died without ever telling his family but it became linked to me in a very strange way.
I’ll try make this make sense but I’ll probably be all over the place.
I work in elderly care and the war came up once or twice but, for obvious reasons, it was never dwelled on.
I was told a story about this Polish safe cracker, who everyone in Dumbarton knew. I must apologise as his name escapes me. Anyway, he was in jail for something, probably petty larceny or drunk & dusordely, I can’t remember, but he had a terrible record of arrests.
Whilst in his cell, the story goes, the army approached him about a mission which, if he took, he’d be free from jail and his criminal record expunged. I can’t remember if there was much persuading or not, but he accepted the mission.
He was then dropped in Germany with a paratroop regiment, broke into some place (I don’t think it was Hitler’s famous Eagle’s Nest but it was obviously important. What was smuggled out, amongst other items, was a list of every German spy and where they were located in Britain, which apparebtly brought the war to an end 5 years earlier than it would have.
    Fascinating stuff.
In my head, there were only days apart between me telling my partner this and her receiving a call from a writer, but it was probably way more than that.
This writer was writing a book on the incident I just described and he wanted to talk to my the GF about her grandad. She had no idea why but he explained that her grandad was one of the paratroopers that dropped in with this Polish guy.
Sadly, hee grandfather passed maybe a year to 18 months before this cane to light so she’d no idea if he had any mementos. The writer was put in to other family members who’d have a better idea.
I’ve honestly no idea what became of the book or anything. It’s a shame. I hope his story got out there because it’s a great one to tell.
The service users in my day centre told me there was a film based on the whole story but I forget the name and I believe all names were changed.
    Sorry this was so long
I’m not the most succinct of people but, if you made it to the end, thank you and well done lol

Coming from Warthunder I didn’t realise how hard it was to shoot down the larger aircraft. If I use the Bf-109 against a C-47 it’s basically impossible to shoot down without running out of ammo.

In Il-2 gun ballistics and damage will be 1-1, this requires you to be very accurate and hit specific spots like the engines or cockpit. Warthunder's RNG shrapnel mechanic makes damage a lot simpler and fatal as with random chance a shot to the wing can cause critical damage to your engine.

Great video. I'm waiting for more C-47. Remember the guys fighting on Earth need a lot of help and supplies. It's a pity that the creators did not include the colors of the parachutes, which made it easier to quickly identify what is in the containers. No markings on the ground. If there was a briefing with maps and drop zones shown, that would also make your video very attractive.

Nah, there was a lot of controversy actually because they dropped them at sites some considered too far from the towns. In my opinion though 8 miles isnt too far to ask a para to walk.

    • @duglife2230
      @duglife2230 2 роки тому

They dropped them into fields. Going directly into a city would be suicide, not just because you'd draw more fire, but because you'd be risking serious bodily harm or even death from smacking into buildings and whatnot. Even dropping into fields was not without injury. The commander of the 82nd Airborne Division, Major General James Gavin, cracked his spine during the Market Garden jump. And it was considered text book, at least for the American paratroopers. Soft landings all around, and only sparse enemy fire in the fields. Another reason is because the major cities and bridges were not the only targets. Different elements of the 82nd, 101st, and British airborne divisions had other objectives such as securing high ground for artillery and securing the Dutch-German border so that the Germans would have a hard time bringing in reinforcements.
I reckon they made it like this in the game for time reasons. They also had the Normandy jump take place in daylight and completely ignored the 82nd's crossing of the Waal river to attack the Nijmegen bridge from both sides. Still one of my favorite games though!

    • @duglife2230
      @duglife2230 2 роки тому +1

I would also like to add that the 82nd most definitely did not secure the Nijmegen bridge on the same day of the jump. It took days of fighting to lock it down, and even after that the Germans were constantly launching counterattacks. But again, time constraints.

Sometimes a sprinkling of luck, good or bad, can change the outcome of an operation. Yes, it was a bridge too far, but taking those other bridges at a later time, or more conventionally, may have changed the outcome too, what impact did that spearhead have on Hitler and his generals that may have altered the battles won in other regions?
