I just found 2 gränsfors axes at my grandpas house. And i showed it to my father and he told me that he had bought them when he was in the same age as me (16) and forgot them in a very hidden place. So those axes had been laying on the ground pretty much untouched for 25 years. And after some grinding they was just as good as new. Wonderful

Interesting that they went with a Hudson Bay pattern head on the small Outdoors hatchet. Some look down on that pattern. But it is easy for a blacksmith to make and has been made for hundreds of years.

I have a Gransfors Bruks Mini Hatchet, a Wildlife Hatchet and a Small Forest Axe, and they are truly things of beauty in addition to being phenomenal wood processing tools!
I just got my SFA and as I held it I became immediately aware that this was an order of magnitude above my Mini and Wildlife Hatchets!
I paired my SFA with a Silky BigBoy 2000 Outback Saw, making an extremely capable, compact and lightweight set.
I can't think of anything as capable, compact and lightweight as a GB Mini Hatchet, Silky Gomboy Curve Outback Saw, Mora Companion Heavy Duty Stainless knife and a Victorinox Huntsman SAK to either carry or to add to a small emergency kit.
Whilst the Silky 360mm saw is only slightly heavier than the 240mm version, the additional length makes the difference in a small kit (to be carried in addition of one's gear).
Likewise, the GB Wildlife and Outdoor Hatchets are not that much heavier than the Mini Hatchet, but they are significantly longer, affecting their inclusion into a small emergency kit which would include more than just cutting tools!

I agree, Gransfors are the best. The steel, the handles, the fit and finish; awesome.
Most axe makers put unreasonably thick handles on their axes, Gransfors does it right; a slender flexy hickory handle with perfect grain. Also, the factory edge is just amazing. Usually a new axe needs a bit of work to achieve a decent edge.
I will have to give an honorable mention to the council tools usa made axes in their sport utility line. They are not as polished as far as finish, but they are less than 1/3 the price , have great steel sharp out of the box, and they also got the handle right.

I don't have much experience with axes & hatchets, but as an American, I agree that Gransfors Bruk makes the finest axes. I own four of them. The only thing that might out perform them is a custom axe & they are way more expensive & the waiting list is months long. I've only seen custom axes in videos, but I'm sure that Swedish steel is better. I've had my Small Forest Axe for more than 25 years & it still is as good as the first day I got it.

      @@Gadmeer
That's nothing. I think the waiting list for a Randall-Made knife, regardless of model number, is up to nearly 10 years now. Don't want to wait that long? There is one source that gets the most popular models practically immediately, without too high a mark-up. Though that's a pretty well-kept secret, and I'm not going to be the one who spills the beans. Sorry.
Don't want to wait? Get a used one, at at HUGE mark-up in price from the private sector. And, hope you're not buying one of the numerous fakes out there. The waiting list for a GFB is actually very reasonable, by comparison. No, I don't think they make the best hatchets or axes in the world. But that doesn't matter. Most folks think they do, so that drives up the price as demand is much higher than the supply can keep up with. I do remember decades ago when GFBs were actually reasonably priced and there was no waiting list.

I took one swing and I was so impressed. So I came back inside and was admiring it and then started noticing all the flaws and was so disappointed. The handle was set about estimated 7 degrees off and the grain orientation was horrible I took some photos of it all and I could not believe my eyes that the workmanship was so bad. So, I managed to buy an OA, sell my OA, miss my OA and buy another OA ... :D
    Now
I'm kinda worried that the steel collar is too short to really protect
the haft ... so I made a longer (say 3.5") leather guard. I soaked the
leather for about 10 minutes, used a towel to dry the surface of the
leather and then I used a leather cord to attach the guard to the haft.
    Now
I'm worried (again, lol) of rust that formed on the steel collar under
the wet leather before the leather dried up. Let's say there would be
some rust. In your opinion, should I be afraid?
    Have a nice day!

Where i live Gransfors is not available, how do you compare with Hultafors? I m thinking of Hultafors H009 840086, for all around axe, what do u think of it

    • @Thoristesting
      @Thoristesting  3 роки тому

Hultafors both makes axes that almost compare to GF and they make a cheaper series, The H009 is the high End!! it is a cool ax, but I still think GF forest is better!

Hallo Mark, It really looks like a nice Ax, but I try to test only product that are in production, not custorm/handmade made, and I looks to me like Hoffman is custorm in that you have to order it.
      but it looks nice :)

Was interested in a gransfors but will probably get a council velvicut. Seen many videos and read many reports on axe forums where poeple are seeing these premuim axes chipping on their first swings into a softwood. Absolutely not the best axes in the world.

The SFA will cut fine but not as fast as one of my chainsaws, Stihl of course. I did not like the finish on my SFA, so I refinished it with boiled linseed oil. Beeswax and paraffin are not my favorite wood finishes.

GB's Hultafors hults bruks, Husqvarna all made by same company. All owned by same company. All same steel. Husqvarna is 1/3 of the price!

Hultafors is the parent company of Hults Bruk. Gransfors Bruk is a different company. Husqvarna contracts out to have their axes made. They are not affiliated by ownership with any of them.
