I did not end up making a video on adjusting the frequency to improve BER but I did write this blog post showing it: radiosification.blogspot.com/2020/05/tuning-your-hotspot-pi-star.html
The only problem I have is this adjustment is only good for each particular radio. There's an inherent oscillator offset for the hotspot typically, but... I must say all my radios work great except the FD-70. That needed offset throws other radios now unable to connect.
Thank you for the bit on fixing the BER. My FT-991 would work on my hotspot but not my FT-70D despite all settings being the same. I would transmit and the hotspot would trigger for half a second then cut out. My BER was sitting around 5%. I adjusted the frequency until my BER was sitting on average 1% between both radios and now my FT-70D works. I've ordered another hotspot so when that arrives I will set one up for each radio and customise the frequency.
I wish that I had seen this earlier. Would have saved me a lot of time messing with Wires-X. When entering the number in Wires-X use the YSF reflector number - not a Wires-X number. Now it works great.
Thanks for the video. You have a nice clear way of presenting things. Dug out my Zumspot from a few years back and this certainly helped jog my memory.
thank you very much for your video, i found it very helpful for the YSF system. Even if I don't understand why I was able to connect the 991-A, instead the 7250D receives but does not connect in transmission
Wonderful video, Im very interested in getting one of these Yaesu handhelds, ive just been given a sharkRF, thanks for this video, your videos are superb! please keep them coming.
I have a problem with my FT70DE. I can't transit to MMDVM HOTSPOT. In reception, however, I receive. With my FTM 400, however, I have no problem receiving and transmitting. I set the radio to Simplex mode, then DN mode without AMS, then set WideFM, then set Half Dev to disabled mode, and channel bandwidth to 12.5Khz. But I can not in any way transit on the Hotspot. I dare not imagine when I will have to configure the other FT3DE radio: on various forums I have read that the FT70DE and also FT1 and FT3 create many of these problems. Could you tell me how to solve the problem? Thank you very much
Quick question. I am using a hotspot with the FT-70D and found your video to be a great help but sometimes when I try and disconnect by holding down the "mode button" instead of disconnecting I get TOO ROO flashing on the screen. Any idea what that is about? I then seem to stay connected...it won't disconnect.
I don't think you can disconnect by holding the mode button. That does something else. I think it's a group mode or something. It does say in the manual if you want to check
Can you show what all the small symbols are to the left of the room Cn, En, Fr, rFr, Rptr, etc and what they mean. Mine is transmitting but all my audio comes back to my FT 70 after a delay and can't imagine this is correct for a QSO. Need to be sure what frequency and offsets to use on the radio as well as which ones go into the configuration screen. I have the upper frequency on the configuration screen at the PLUS offset frequency of 439.950 and the lower one at 434.950. I think I am close but still not quite there . 73 Thanks Greg KE8QAS.
Thanks for this informative video. Question: Why would after pushing the F and AMS keys the radio connect to my own node? In other words, my own call sign begins to scroll across the display. After doing that, entering any YSF numbers on the EN line and pushing the AMS takes me nowhere the radio does nothing.
Great video. Not sure why, but when I followed you directions to enable "UPPERCASE Hostfiles" it left everything lowercase. I have tried it numerous times without success. Any ideas?
The radio contains a vocoder that compresses the voice down. That component isn't in the hotspot and you can't compress your audio into the same format to speak to anyone else without it. It would be possible to have the vocoder in software on the hotspot, but unfortunately it's proprietary and the company who made it doesn't allow us to do this.
@@radiosification Thank you, that would be helpful. Also a video on using YSF to DMR would be nice as well. Your setup videos were excellent and had me up and running in a very short time. Thank you!
I’m stuck at 3:34 of the video. Everything went well up to that point. I changed the Yaesu Fusion Configuration exactly as shown, clicked on “Apply Changes” and all went well. Then clicked on “Update”. It goes to the update page where it says “starting update” but goes no further. Thanks.
Great video but I still could not get mine working. When I tried to do the update it just sat there trying to stop the services. It did not lock up just sat there, I waited over 10 min. I was able to click on the Dashboard and it came right up. When I transmit on my rig it sees me but I just never hear anything from the rooms. Oh well.
Hi I got ft 70d yaesu and jumbo hotspot I here cq UK fine but when transmit into it I break up and some time I don't get in but received it's fine on jumbo hotspot to my radio
That sounds like you need to adjust the Rx offset on the hotspot so it's accurate to the frequency the radio is transmitting on. I was actually planning to make a video showing how to do that next.
It's mostly the same for all Fusion radios, yes. Only the radio's interface will be slightly different. Follow along with the instructions and you should be able to figure out any differences with your radio if you're familiar with it.
Is the tutorial for adjusting the BER done yet, but just not posted to the playlist shown above? And thank you for these tutorials. I'm going to try to get my jumbo spot set up soon.
@@radiosification Also, my Yaesu Configuration block is different than yours in that it has no option to select the UPPER CASE. (plus I have not been able to get the Jumbo Spot working yet. I keep ending up with a DNS error.)
Thank you for the video. You do a very good job describing this topic. I noticed you can switch between different modes. Can you come Fusion or DMR to DStar?
No, you can only crossmode between modes with the same vocoder. DSTAR uses an incompatible vocoder to the DMR, Fusion, NXDN which all use the same and can be crossmoded. Also fusion in VW mode works with P25 because the vocoders are compatible
radiosification I don’t know what is different in the vocoders but is it’s a different sample rate, a sample rate converter can be used. I don’t know if a RPi is up to the task of sample rate conversion.
@@thuff3207 no the same rate is the same, it is the vocoder data rate I think is different. I'm not completely sure of the exact differences though so don't quote me on that. There is no way to get them to work together as far as I'm aware without decoding the audio and re-encoding it again with the correct vocoder. You can't change the sample rate (resample) vocoder data without decoding it first anyway.
Sounds like you're doing it correctly. The problem could be caused by having multiple modes turned on in the hotspot. Do you have more than one digital mode on? It has to scan each of them and the transmission from the radio is quite short so it often misses it if you have more than one mode on
