Pruning Garden ROSES for more Abundant Beautiful Blooms // Growing roses for cut flowers

  • I'm starting the big job of pruning back some of my David Austin garden roses. I'm pruning harder for more abundant blooms for cut flowers and it can be a little intimidating and scary at first to cut so hard, but after a few years of working with roses I don't worry so much anymore. I'm chatting about care of roses, pests and diseases in our zone 8b here in Oregon. my son Brayden gives a little history on roses and I finish with a before and after look at all the hard work and wow its amazing to see.

    Hi Beth, something I learned, leaving those tags on the rose will kill that particular stem. I thought it was crazy until I checked my roses, and sure enough, every stem with the tag was dead. I just thought I would mention it, because I caught a glimpse of it on yours too.
    My favorite rose of course is Koko Loko and then a climber Rosarium Uetersen. The climber is a gorgeous pink but it;s form is only so so. However it blooms a zillion pink roses like no other rose I have ever seen. It's the most gorgeous thing.

      I bury mine about 2" deep next to the rose it came off of. I'd never forget my rose's names but, should we ever sell our farm, the new owners would always be able to identify each individual rose by digging up the grower tag buried next to it. 😊

      I had no idea!!! My gole this year was to tag the verities with professional copper plates in front of the rose. I'm definitely doing it now! Thanks

    Hi Beth, can I just add, to your otherwise great teaching video;
    * clean the pruners from one rose bush to the next with disinfectant detergent to prevent transferring diseases. Even though you can’t see any, just wipe the pruners to be sure… some diseases are not always visible… any David Austin roses are worth the hassle … 😊 it is a bit tedious job I know, but worth it 👍

      Yes, of course! I use hydrogen proxide between each bush on my cutting edge. Thanks for the input 👍

    Just came in from the greenhouse to eat lunch and enjoyed your video! My all time favorite David Austin is Jude the Obscure! I am on the hunt for Evelyn but she seems to be out of stock everywhere! I really enjoyed Braden's voice over with the rose factoid information! So fun and educational.

    Love that you focused on the David Austin roses. I have over 20 varieties and find that mine are all so different. All are around 15 years old and their mature forms call for unique pruning. In the early years this was daunting cause some, like Lady of Shallot, are short climbers. And, Tess of d'Urbervilles and James Galway actually are large climbers here in Northern California. Our extremely hot, dry summers also limit flowering to mostly Spring. Love them, but they sure are a lot of work and their vase life is limited as well. Thanks for sharing your tips. You are inspiring!

    A job well done! I can't grow David Austin here but I just ordered two more shrub roses today to add to the collection in the spring - Morden Centennial (pink), Marie Bugnet (white) and Winnipeg parks (deep pink). Good job Ma'am!

    Each Spring here in Connecticut I always feel like I want Instant results and found your video very informative. I guess I'm an impatient gardener. I sometimes do too much and have to take a break. Yes, there have been injuries along the way so I've been sorting out what needs to be done first in the garden. I'd love to try and grow a rose plant, I don't have any in my yard. This is the year to go for it. Thank you for the inspiration.

    I love your easygoing approach. Excellent!!! I'm so jealous. I live in NC and we are soooo hot, humid and damp in the Summers. We struggle so much with fungus, disease, bugs...All of the bad stuff. Lol. I'd love to get some David Austin roses!!! 😭 Im not sure if its a D. Austin rose but love Pope John Paul the 2nd rose. And yes. Listen to your body. I'm 56 and struggle with hand pain. All my years of manual labor. Lol. 😊❤ Love you Beth!!! 😊❤ ⚘️⚘️⚘️⚘️🌹🌹🌹🌹

    Right now, I just have two climbing roses. I am looking forward to this Mother's Day, as I will be getting some fragrant bushes from my son. Yay! I can not remember the names of the climbing roses. One is a white fluffy rose with thorns, the other is a ridiculously bright pink (like Barbie pink) thornless. They are both turning 3 years old this May. They do well and have lots of pretty blooms. I'm always afraid of pruning too much off them...as I have just really gotten them to grow up their trellis where I want them.

    Hey! Another great video! I am curious though why you are getting rid of some. You seem to use them a lot in your floral designs. I've got 700 roses this yr in the ground and I'm selling thru a co-op to designers and florists and there are so few videos out there on farming roses and I have truly appreciated every one you have made😊

    So thankful for your videos! I was wondering if you trim and fertilize them, will it hurt them if we had a major temp drop like in the teens? I’m not sure if I’m ok to prune now. I’m in zone 7a.

      @crowleyhouseflowerfarm  7 місяців тому +1

      I thought of it, but the roses I was trimming were a little sheltered by trees. I'm waiting till March to do our back area that's less sheltered. Are roses already budding out!! 😀

    Should I prune the roses that I received last year in sept.? They have leafs, and also new growth due to how variant the temperatures had been. The stems are like pencil, thin. I live in zone 7b New Jersey. Sorry... 1st language is Spanish. 😅❤ Found your channel yesterday, and I immediately subscribed. 🌱🌹🌷

      Welcome 🙏 I think I'd wait a little, and when you brune just take out any crossing branches and open up the center for airflow. I sometimes wait a year on new roses before I prune, and when I do, it will be a light pruning only. You won't go wrong, roses are resulint. Good luck! You've got this!

    Any advice for an old climbing rose that never flowers? I’ve trained the canes horizontally, and I do get leaves and new growth, but no flowers. It’s on the west wide of a wooden fence..gets lots of sun…I also fertilize, but not sure about the best time for that AND pruning…..ty

    • @crowleyhouseflowerfarm
      @crowleyhouseflowerfarm  7 місяців тому +1

      Some climbing roses bloom only on second-year stems. A complete lack of bloom on your climbing rose makes me think you might be removing the stems before they reach the blooming age, maybe resurch your rose and bestvstage to prune it ?

    What is your watering schedule? Is that 1/2 inch poly with emitters every 6 inches? I have 1/2" rainbird every 6 inches and it's watering my arbs in the same bed. I think I'm over watering my roses. I'm considering splitting up the drip for arbs only vs roses only 🤔 curious to hear how you water yours. My hips hurt just from watching you do all that work and thinking about how much cleanup i need to do lol 😅

      We have them on drip tape at the moment and water 30 min a day or 1hr when we get really hot and yes 6 inch spacing.
