    I saw this live. There hasn’t been a better performance that wasn’t on Broadway…and that’s lessening her.
    Nell was perfection in this. Absolute perfection. Brought the house down.
    Wondered why she wasn’t in NY. I was the lucky one.

    Nell Carter was one of my all time favorite performers. And Dolly is one of those shows that is so well written and changes with every actress who plays the part. It's always fresh and very rewatchable.

    I actually enjoy Carter’s rendition. It’s bright toned , saucy and mischievous. And really her timing and conviction are believable in a role which can get so phoney so easily . Never was aware of her doing this role.

    My first non-Broadway non-touring show. I was being spoiled and didn’t even know it. No non-touring show has EVER come close to this magical piece of work. She would be bringing the house down on Broadway right now. What a night.

      Mine too! I saw Phantom in LA as my first theatrical experience, and wanted to see more, so I convinced my parents to take me to this in Long Beach. I loved it. I still have the program!

    I'm a big fan of Nell Carter and never knew she played this role. It like a dream come true because I always said I felt she would make a good Dolly. Now if I find out she played Mama Rose, I would have life.

    Her distinctive voice is really wonderful to hear in this Herman classic. Her flirtatious Mae West-like entrance to the title number - WOW!!! I still get goosebumps listening to her songs in Ain't Misbehavin'.

      Artist in Motion: In order to be a musical theater icon, you have to appear in several successful musicals, create leading roles and have roles written for you. What exactly has this “icon” done in the theater to deserve your accolade? And that nasal voice 👎🤮

      dancerlisa Nell Carter was a consummate professional. She made appearances in nearly 30 television shows including series regular credits on Gimme A Break (1981-87, 137 episodes); and Hangin’ With Mr Cooper (1993-95, 42 episodes) as well as more than a dozen feature films. It was In the theater, however, where she shone most brightly with other 15 stage credits to go with this one. Her most notable role was in Ain’t Misbehavin’ in 1978 for which she won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical. She later won an Emmy Award for the television adaptation of the same role. Sadly, Nell Carter passed away in 2003 at the age of 54.

    She has the spirit of the character which should show through more than the costumes or choreography which to me it does you have to remember she wasn't like most dolly where they were like carol changing or bette gravel being thing she was an ample woman who had talent

    Not surprised, the "cheapest man on or off-Broadway" would deign to choreograph such an artistic travesty. To paraphrase the "Chorus Line" anthem, What I Did for $$$.

    Yikes, the choreography. Did these boys not dance??? And when did this become a duet for Dolly and head waiter? No build, no excitement, and certainly not a showstopper.

    I thought she was great in "Ain't Misbehavin' " but this production of "Hello, Dolly" doesn't do it for me. The choreography seems really pedestrian, and I'm not feeling Nell in that role.

    • @bigred8432
      @bigred8432 7 років тому +6

      The choreography looks great to me. Very similar in style to the original production. The choreography for the stage version of 'Hello, Dolly!' has always been about style, quirk and elegance - most of all it must never overshadow Dolly herself, for whether played by a huge star or your Aunt Mabel in the local theatre Dolly's personality must be the biggest, shining factor. The choreography in the movie is overblown and distracts from the heart. Although, I appreciate it's 'to each his own' :)
