As a colored pencil artist, you want that extra sharp point on your pencils. Maybe not for elementary students, but middle school and up who are serious about learning art.
Müsli is the German way. But to write a ü without the umlaut (dot accent) with ‘English’ only letters you would write ‘ue’ so that’s where the Muesli comes from technically it’s the same spelling just one using the umlaut and one using the alternative.

As an artist the pencil sharpener has my interest... I also was guessing about double the cost, because the different points are so useful for diffent types of art purposes!
As a teacher myself, I would say that this pencil sharpener would be great IF IT PLUGGED IN TO A WALL *and had directions written on it that the pencil doesn’t have to be held into the device. My students and I have broken even the most INDUSTRIAL of electric sharpeners (way more expensive than $45), so it would have to be STURDY and not lose its charge every other day to be of any real use in a classroom. This is demonstrably a fun home sharpener, but not for school I don’t think.
i have the kuratoga pencil and i've found as an artist it is one of the best pencils i've ever used. and its also not the most expensive mechanical pencil i've used.
Be careful of the magnet toys. Cases in China where kids swallowed the magnetic balls and because the magnetic force is so strong, swallowing more than one ball actually squeezed intestinal segments together causing severe damage/death to the intestinal tract.
The reflection drawing thing probably works better one way VS the other because of your overhead light source. So if you sat in a different area and your overhead light source was coming from a different place or angle you could see that image thru the glass portion better on the paper
😭😭😭 I wish you would have shown every color of the highlighters and how each erased. We gotta see how it all works if we’re testing them out ❤❤❤ but that’s just me, I love and appreciate you and your videos Rachel
Ok, I'm getting that LED note board. My daughter is 6, and trying to get her to practice spelling is a challenge. I think this would make it 100% more exciting ❤ I've also been looking to purchase that digital calender.
I can remember when kids went to school right after Labor Day in the United States. I'm glad my children are all adults and I don't have to say midsummer, stop the fun in the sun it's school time.
Hi yes I'm only 3 minutes in but I want to tell everyone to curvise write " O'Connell " because it is so fun but sometimes I get a lil carried away and it becomes "O'Connnnnnnneeeelllllllllllll". SO MANY LOOPS!
It's better to highlight over a pen than over a pencil. Less smudge. And it'll give you a better idea if it's really ereasable or not. For the magnet fidget pen, I love to have mine in my job meetings. I use it as a pen, but I also put one of the metallic balls on the top of it and spin it! It helps to keep me awake ;) Also, I like to keep some of the tubes on the ink section, but turning the polarity of one. It « floats » and if you push it down, it « catapult » it! (But do not try it on the serious meetings of the management!)
The sign would be cute to put up by the door and remind the kids of things to grab before they head out. Like “first day of school!! Don’t forget - back pack -lunch -jacket”
I would assume that last fancy pencil is for adults or at least high schoolers because, yeah, younger kids will break it or lose it anyway. I could see it being great for handwritten essays, SATs, times when you’re extensively writing and it really has to be pencil. Probably great for drafting or pencil drawing as well.
As a teacher- i want the led board and sharpener lol. Also love the erasable pens abd highlighters for lesson pkanning- but the Frixion brand. They actually work.
For Luke, You should just get him a light box! They work great and are super easy as long as you could print out the photo that he wants to draw. You could also copy the photos that he wants to draw from book probably. But Tracing paper can be kind of annoying because you have to draw it twice and sometimes it's hard to see what you are drawing, so my suggestions would be either 1) a light box or 2) a small projector and a place on the wall that he can project images on and pin his piece of paper and draw over the image that way.
The projector idea is great and try carbon paper it's old fashioned but still does the trick, we use it in an art department all the time with the students
I was *this close* to buying that skylight thing. Glad I watched your review because it sounds like I’d be better off just keeping my paper version! It’s just as aggravating to update as the skylight is!
The SkyLight is basically the same price as my Echo Show 15... It displays my calendar AND does all the things you wanted. Plus, it has a remote and links to my other smart devices. 10/10 recommend.
I recently got one of the rotating mechanical pencils (different model tho) and I really like it! I feel like they're great for people who write or draw a lot, because the line stays consistent.
I really wanted a non-food related video to watch rn and now I saw this from you! Perfect. Grateful for this moment of work-break, plus my favourite bread based snack, plus this video .
Big tip for tracing easily from an artist! Print out the image you want to trace. On the back (non-picture side), color the entire page in with pencil. Make sure to cover the entire image's area so you don't miss any spots. Once the backside is colored in, flip it over and place it against whatever paper/canvas you are sketching on. Be very careful not to move it once it is placed down; tape it down if you need to. Then take a pen/pencil and follow the printed lines, tracing them as if you were drawing it yourself. Push down hard enough to dent slightly, but not so hard that you rip holes in the paper. Once you are finished tracing the lines, pick up the print carefully - straight up from the canvas. The pencil on the back of the page should have left a faint outline of your print! This is how I trace without tracing paper!
I've been wanting that Skylight calendar since it came out but it's just not affordable. But between my depression and ADHD it would be so helpful in our house. Such a great product!
We start back to school July 25. 😮 The kids get more time out during the year now but I miss the extra 2 weeks in the summer. My third will start school next year. It’s hard to believe how grown they all are.
So many awesome back to school (and everyday use) products! I definitely want to get the sign and markers for our Elf on the Shelf to use when he comes for the holidays! He normally leaves the kids a note every morning and i think this would be perfect. I really think the kids will enjoy it too!
I actually prefer the larger cards with the different font and art styles. I feel like the others picked a font and style and then just plugged jokes in, but the other ones mixed it up, had variety, matched fonts with themes, etc. I feel like the variety would keep them interesting and fun longer.
As a teacher, the basic electric sharpeners that are usually bought for classrooms tend to be like $50- $60 or more so that's actually a good price for a high-tech sharpener lol
Hi Rachel, love the channel. I love this segment on back to school items, especially being an elementary school teacher living in Canada to top it off. Wish the skylight calendar wasn’t so expensive but that would be such an amazing tool for my household even in my classroom to get like students in my class to do like they’re like jobs of the week. I think it’s so neat, want to regift one at like a cheaper cost let me know and I’ll take it off your hands but I wish that the cost of it wasn’t a couple hundred dollars even though it does seem like a worthwhile investment❤
23:14 Rach try the PILOT, FriXion Light Pastel Erasable Highlighters. They are pastels and a race well with non to very minimal residue. However this brand erasable items tend to fade when exposed to heat, and sometimes going back over where you erased the ink is picky about sticking.
rachel if you like using highlighters, you have to check out the Mildliner highlighters! they're dual ended which is a bonus but i Love the colours. they're more muted than your regular highlighter but you can definitely still see your text through them. (not erasable though)
The mirror tracing thing- try rotating the actual piece of glass. Never seen it but was a thought I had. For the starlight thing- my husband got a raspberry pi and an old tv and it hangs in our kitchen area and we connect google calendar to it. Everyone is assigned a color. I’m not sure what program we use but we throw word of the day, text of the day, reminders on a ticker (I use that for meal planning and f1 races) has a countdown (to birthday or big event) and the weather. Love it to much!
OMG, the Kuru Toga pencil! I bought one last year and I love it, especially for exams. I used to have that problem where the lead becomes really flat so it writes too light and wide so you turn it but then it's too sharp. The kuru toga completely solved that problem. I have the standard one and for my grip it's not the most comfortable, but now that they have different models, I ordered one with a grip. Never going back to non-rotating mechanical pencils!
From a teacher's perspective, some of these would be very nice. That pencil sharpener is quite nice, just get some velcro on the bottom and attach it to a table/desk and it would be good. That fidget pen is too intense for a classroom setting, unless it is only brought out during free time or when all work is finished. All I can picture is all the little pieces falling on the floor and getting lost. Frixion is the superior brand for the erasing highlighters. I also recommend the pens to those that really prefer using them, they erase very well and I use them often myself in the classroom. I do love those fun pens though, they would be great gifts and rewards. Not overly disruptive but still fun. I do think the lunchbox cards are extra, but still adorable for those that want to add something extra. I don't see a problem with the clip art looking ones but everyone is different on their preferences. I do want to add though, that more often than not they end up on the floor of the lunchroom. I have a fellow teacher who has one of the acrylic light up boards in her room and it is so fun! She tasks one student a week to write the welcome note or reminder on them for the day and it is a job the kids love. There are much more simplistic tracing items out there than the one shown here, it looked too finicky to get any real use out of. As a parent, I have been looking at those devices that hang on our wall for chores and scheduling but the price alone keeps me away. It was nice seeing real feedback after some use prior to purchasing. I wonder if pictures can be added? That would help for children that cannot read, though I am assuming that it does not allow that yet.
10:00 you can search a font or picture you like and print it out, place the light up board over it and trace 🙂 making things easier for people who want to make something nice or more consistent. Can even make a small coloring page for kids to fill in
I just got the skylight calendar the other day also because my kids have so many activities now! What I discovered when playing around with it, when everything transfers over from your calendar and ends up all under you, you can go in and edit the events and recategorize them to whoever they correspond to. You can also set reminders for each event so the calendar will make a sound to remind you.
Hi Rachel. I agree with you, it's and expensive device for so little. I Kind of liked the idea. If I was able to buy it, that device will be 2 whole months of salaries (I'm not in the USA or Canada). So for me, if I need to save 2 months of hard working, it should be extraordinaire! I have 3 erasable highlighters (different brand), it's like you said, a tiny bit will stay there, but nothing too noticeable. And for normal highlighters, there are tons of new shades, I liked using different colours in a textbook for different things.
The pencil sharpener was so cool! Just to maybe make you feel better about the price, at least here in the USA, as an art teacher, I bought an X-Acto electric pencil sharpener for almost $300.00. Yep, not a typo! It was an all metal, heavy duty sharpener. A few years later the price dropped to around $160/170. Now granted, it lasted me 15 years (the second one was for my other room as I was traveling between 2 buildings). Unfortunately, to the heartache of many teachers, they stopped making it. Soooo, $45 for a pencil sharpener is cheap, from the perspective of a teacher.
It sounds like you would be better off getting something like an iPad for the family and have a meal planner app and calendar on it, if you use Apple products. Then you can get a cover that can turn into a stand and have it off to the side but still accessible. Then any apps your family ends up using can still sync between any other device.
theres a version of erasable highlighters that do erase like a regular eraser! theyre also highligher colors (pastel ones too)! theyre called pilot frixion highlighters! theres also a version of the kurutoga pencil thats much more comfortable to use with colored bodies. its so highly rated bc its from japan, they take stationery very seriously over there!
There are other brands of those types of pencils that rotate the leaf… and some that even advance the leaf automatically… they’re great for older kids who draw ✍️.
I know it's only August but I am spooky, so please note that it's almost that time of year -- when the mitochondria becomes the frightocondria, the haunted house of the cell.
Erasable highlighters are definitely too dark. Also, once you erase, you can’t re-highlight over that same spot even with a different color or brand of highlighter. The Fixon erasable pens are some of my favorite pens ever. Where were they when 3 decades ago when I was in school? They erase perfectly every time, and you can write over the erased spots many times. Highly recommend those. I’m 43 y/o and use them (G-2 gel pens are my favorite tho). My 18 y/o daughter uses them in college, and my 13 y/o son uses them in middle school. Have heard that leaving papers in a hot car can cause them to erase. However, we live in south Florida and have never experienced that, and both kids have left their book bags in the car constantly out in the sun in 90+ degree temps.
You need to try the Frixion erasable highlighters instead! Those are all I use in college because they also don’t bleed through thin paper and they pretty much fully erase!
Because that glas board I as a teacher see so many possibilities of it beeing practical 1. Its fun especially for kids who are learning to write or mybe spelling that way there is a change in their routine and the fun stays 2. For older ones to study they can make it look good wipe dtuff away 3. Or i had a student that hates traditional paper i used a whiteboard with him and slowly transitioned him to paper that would have been amazing
My son and I both have AdhdAu. My mother got us the magnetic pen. It is stupid. If you're using a pen, it's probably not time to be building things with the pieces of the pen. There's no way my son could've used it during class or even homework. Yes, mom was being thoughtful, but, unfortunately, it was not a win.
Honestly, I had a Brother electric sharpener for my class 17 years ago that I paid about $40 US for because it could stand up to classroom use. That dinosaur sharpener costing you CAD$45 isn’t that far off if it holds up and does 3 different sharpness types. That light up sign could be used as a family announcement or notes sign. The Skylight thing had me wondering, if you put meals for the week in it, can it help generate your grocery list? THAT would be a great feature.

I was going to mention these highlighters too!

The Pilot friXion highlighter are great. They also have them in pastels and everything. I've used SOOO MANY in school
Ok I can get a unicorn version of the sharpener for $20 👀 kinda want it
10:00 you can search a font or picture you like and print it out, place the light up board over it and trace 🙂 making things easier for people who want to make something nice or more consistent. Can even make a small coloring page for kids to fill in
lol. How smart. Why isn’t my brain smart like yours? 😂
The skylight thing would be great for someone who loves technology and organization. For me I would rather have a pen a paper. Lol
The image reflector would have been cool for decorating cookies. Shame it doesn’t work better.
Thank you so much for this video ! The skylight is very interesting inam curious to know more.
There are other brands of those types of pencils that rotate the leaf… and some that even advance the leaf automatically… they’re great for older kids who draw ✍️.
I love how Chris just doesn't acknowledge the dinosaur pencil sharpener. 😂😂😂
A light board is so much better for tracing. Also I now want a dinosaur pencil sharpener. Do I need one? Nope.
My child is not even born yet and I was still excited alongside Rachel 😂
I ordered the original joke cards that you recommended and I’m so excited to surprise my daughter with them!
I cannot with pencil crayon 😂
I know it's only August but I am spooky, so please note that it's almost that time of year -- when the mitochondria becomes the frightocondria, the haunted house of the cell.
You need to try the Frixion highlighters!!!!!
The clear board would be good for letter or picture tracing. Just put a printout underneath and trace away
I’m a math teacher and I want that sign to write our learning goals. 😂
Awesome video!
No one in my house going back to school this year, but it's cool up see the products that are out there for the new year
i love my kuru toga pencils!
You need to try the Frixion erasable highlighters instead! Those are all I use in college because they also don’t bleed through thin paper and they pretty much fully erase!
Because that glas board I as a teacher see so many possibilities of it beeing practical
1. Its fun especially for kids who are learning to write or mybe spelling that way there is a change in their routine and the fun stays
2. For older ones to study they can make it look good wipe dtuff away
Chocolate sprinkles is actually Hagelslag, a Dutch thing! The sprinkles also come in fruit flavor
Am I in school? No. Do I use pencils? rarely. Do I absolutely need the dino sharpener in my life? YES.
Those pens are indeed awesome.
Does anyone remember seeing that drawing reflection thing on commercials in like the early 2000s?
Honestly, I had a Brother electric sharpener for my class 17 years ago that I paid about $40 US for because it could stand up to classroom use. That dinosaur sharpener costing you CAD$45 isn’t that far off if it holds up and does 3 different sharpness types.
That light up sign could be used as a family announcement or notes sign. The Skylight thing had me wondering, if you put meals for the week in it, can it help generate your grocery list? THAT would be a great feature.
The tracing tool is very dependent on where your light source is. Move your light or move your self and it will get better.
I think the pens would be great party favors.
The sharpener is only $20 right now! Thanks! I ordered one for all my kids teachers and us at home!
