She's from Seri Menanti, i no wonder she didn't use onion or shallot in her Gulai Lemak. In Selangor, Onion is very essential in every Gulai Lemak Adat Perpatih is exclusive to Minangkabau people (a Malay Subethnic) which presents largely in Negeri Sembilan and Minangkabau highlands of West Sumatera. I have many friends who fall across the entire spectrum of Islam and they are all amazing people. Thank you for shedding light and continuing the education process for the wider community. Looking forward to traveling and eating with you again in the near future. In the mean time, should you ever make it to Aus, make sure you hit me up.
Noooo, u don't eat the begedil (potato ball) in one piece like that, u just need to take a piece of it and eat it with soto, it'll add more texture & compliments the taste of soto itself.. Malaysian food is all about mixing a lil bit of everything 😁
Usually i'll put the potato ball on another plate so it won't get mushy by the juice, just take a bit and eat alltogether with soto rice + nuts + juice + sambal.. the dense texture and the saltiness of the potato ball will elevate soto taste.. try it! 😁😁😁
You should ask Aween to teach you how to eat with your hands. Most westerners try but don’t seem to do it properly. When done right it isn’t messy looking.

Hello Aween and Max. You are ready for a good meals cooked by Aween. Darn I cooked the same thing but mine don’t have spice. My stomach would burn me. You have an iron tummy. I just love watching you eat all that food. Nice aerial of Aween’s property.
I find one of the best ways to discover someone else's culture is through their food. When your mind is open to new things you may find something you like. Now you making me hungry.
Yes and no. I was in Australia a few weeks ago... let just say lets appreciate them for their extreme kindness, not their food when you come from Malaysia. 😂
So far this is my favorite Max McFarlin (video) creation simply because it doesn't just talk about food but more so, about people and their way of life. We rarely see you actually interact with people, it's usually all about the food. This one walks off with the gold! Plenty of cultures are matriarchal but it's good to know what systems are in place to ensure the financial security of women if anything should happen to the "provider". Of course a lot has changed through the years as women have become empowered and independent. Now why haven't we seen more of this from you? This would make a great series, and I believe you said it yourself that you had your heart set on doing it. Needless to say, the food looked delightful and, as usual, you looked ecstatic trying out the dishes - a crazy overload of coconut milk, yummers!
What a wonderful video Max! Good on you for donating for a good cause. I have not seen these interesting dishes in Malaysia before. They are definitely unique and I would love to try them! I might be heading to KL end of May, so excited as I love KL 😁 I can't wait for the next video, hopefully it's soon!
End of May would be the last few days of fasting for Muslim...and if you stick long enough, you'll celebrate Raya too...only not in the capital since everyone will be going to their village...☺️
@@MVPA-io5ee We always go to celebrate Raya in KL as we love the Ramadan night markets and Raya celebrations! We look forward to that time of year. @@Amilovesperfume i said this because i live in KL 😂 and i know how 'silent' it could be since many people would go back to meet their parents.. so i thought, if you want to celebrate Raya, it is best celebrating outside of KL and Selangor. ☺️ And be safe and stay healthy 🤗🥰

I don’t share their religious beliefs, but we have a shared humanity based on love, kindness, caring and generosity.

I dont think its about being conservative or what Aween refereed to as "moderate" because the family who cooked for you are clearly conservative but welcoming and invited you in their family. The issue is more a case of how the media only highlights extremism and say Muslim in the same breathe, yet the Islam abhors extremism and warns against it.

Malaysia a very beautiful country in every aspects. The people, the weather, the landscape, the food, the culture, etc. With enough of exploration and discovery, who knows, you might even staying in Malaysia for a very long time. Many have done it, and those people are great people with qualities that suit the Malaysian qualities.
You're right! I seem to always come back quicker each time I leave haha! I have a pretty long trip ready to go this summer!
Thanks for sharing the moment. Your incredible appetite and food curiosity is a worthy reward for any Malaysian hosts and cooks.
I can't wait until the day when Max colabs with Mark Wiens ! That day should be made a national holiday throughout the world.
I am ready when he is hahaha
That would be a fantastic, scrumptous collaboration!!
Many tourist came to Malaysia when they want to eat they go to chinese restaurant or Indian restaurant...they can get chinese and indian food at their country...they should eat at Malay restaurant, that's the real food that they cannot get at their country...not many of them try to eat Malay food...and Max, for your info Adat Perpatih only practise in the state of Negeri Sembilan, other states do not practise Adat Perpatih, they practise Adat Temenggong, more to the man.
Yes, Malaysia is great because it has many different cultures and cuisines. My goal was to try one type of Malay cooking and then getting to talk to Aween about her life. Thank you for the information my friend!
Malaysian food is Fushion! Thats make it so nice! Same as Surinamese the taste is not the same as “Indian” “Chinese”. Malaysia create own flavour. So whats Malaysian Food? Its Fushion! I love Fushion!!
Mate, as always I am salivating watching your travel adventures. You are truly #livingthedream. Firstly, food looked amazing. Secondly, what a great advocate for moderate Islam.
That's the American way of eating begedil..huhuhuhu!!!
Mohd Zulhalmi wait so you don’t let it soak in all the Soto juices?
Usually i'll put the potato ball on another plate so it won't get mushy by the juice, just take a bit and eat alltogether with soto rice + nuts + juice + sambal.. the dense texture and the saltiness of the potato ball will elevate soto taste.. try it! 😁😁😁
Mohd Zulhalmi I got you👌🏻 will give it a try next time Forsure🙌🏻
Yes, we eat begedil little by little together with all other stuffs in that soto
You should ask Aween to teach you how to eat with your hands. Most westerners try but don’t seem to do it properly. When done right it isn’t messy looking.
I am so much better now thanks to her
You're with the wonderful Malay family here... It's so nice...

Malays are nice, no doubt as are Iraqis and Syrians and Afghans. I just wonder how many Americans will welcome an Iraqi or Syrian or Afghan stranger into their homes
I totally agree!
Ohhh, thank you so very much as always! I would love to hear about your KL travels so please do keep me updated!!!!
We stay in kl city centre, they do close for about 3 days there but we try to find things we can do outside of the city. We don't know anyone that lives in Malaysia but we have always wondered how wonderful it would be to visit the villages especially the time of Raya 😊 Hopefully we can catch a glimpse of Max when we are there!

There are beautiful, kind, generous, Muslims, Buddhist, Hindus, Atheists, Christians, etc all over the world. This I’ve learnt from all my travels.
