- David Tennant and Matt Smith on how they felt about quitting Doctor Who, being the new guy on set, passing on the role to someone else on the last day of shooting, on coming back for the 50th etc.
7th December 2019, Wales Comic Con, Telford
I love the fact that Matt and David are in this together, they're always so open about their experience and they're interested in each others, they're the only two doctors who really feel like that the doctor is essentially one person
Charlotte D Peter Davidson, Colin Baker, and Sylvester McCoy also do a lot of interviews and panels together and have the same vibes as these two.
Jon pertwee and pat troughton were the same. They were famous for doing convention's teasing each other just like doc 2 and doc 3 did. You can tell on the troughton years tape (showing age here) when he talk about there convention tome3 together Pertwee was both very fond of pat and that he misses him.
@@barneyhall8325 Pertwee seems like an upstanding fellow
All the actors who have played thee Doctor get along even Ecccleston. They actually consider playing the doctor to be a part of a brotherhood. I've seen them together
David Tennant and Matt Smith are the tenth and eleventh doctor pretending to be actors.
They litteraly look younger, we saw through their game =_=*
it literally feels that way! damn
Omg yasss they are doing gooood....
Yes
Doctor Who is missed so desperately, if the show ever gets it together and comes back on TV that is!! While we love Jodie Whitaker as #13, Matt & David will FOREVER be "The Doctor" to us💞
The way they interact is so kind, re-asking the other the question at the end of each response. It's just lovely to watch them so comfortable together.
When David calls out "what happened to the Christmas specials?" LOL! DANG! CALLED OUT!
Oh my god, this is wonderful! I hope that they both get to show up on the show again in guest roles. :)
Well, theres a 60th anniversary coming up in 2023... just saying...🤷♂️
Yep
@Aslan T Vorlon Even if they are, Jodie can still return, along with these two, Capaldi, Eccleston if he up to it and whoever the 14th doctor is...
@Aslan T Vorlon Hows 13 "man-hating?" Shes best mates with two of 'em? Granted, one is Bradley Walsh, who in all his magnificence transends all mere human boundaries such as gender, but still..
@Aslan T Vorlon I'm sorry your masculinity is threatened
SERIOUSLY! Multi-Doctor Christmas special NEEEEEDS to happen! How do we trend this?!
I very much liked the David Bradley-Peter Capaldi Christmas special about World War 1 and much more.
It already happened. 12th and 1st in Twice Upon Time.
Had a big smile through this
I love it when actors who have played the Doctor discuss these sort of things with each other, it's a real joy seeing them interact lol
I love how they understand that they are custodians of a great and important role. I think Doctor's 2-12 really understood the fact that this wasn't just something they could wing and create. That there was a history to the character that needed to be taken into account. They found a way to make the character their own while still staying true to the core of who the character was. Hats off to Hartnell, Troughton, Pertwee, T. Baker, Davison, C. Baker, McCoy, McGann, Hurt, Eccelston, Tennant, Smith, and Capaldi! The true Doctors of Doctor Who!
I still think it's funny that Peter Capaldi who took over the role of Doctor Who played a character in World War Z named W.H.O. Doctor...
World Health Organization, right? Yeah, that's great!
@@cryptozoomauler5505 yeah, I thought that was hilarious!
Even David Tennant recognising that not having Christmas specials really sucks
I can not imagine anyone more perfect than David Tennant.
When tennant talks about not wanting to be the guy that regenerates for 30 seconds and the series goes no where all I can think about is Richard e Grant, he played the doctor in an animated film before Christopher eccleston and also played him in a comedy bit with Mr. Bean and finally came back for matt smith as the great intelligence. He was the doctor and no one really remembers but he has hung around doctor who for so long.
"giving up the mantle"
David Tennant: well you see actually...
What would a doctor like that be, would he even count?!?! Pall McGann
Paul McGann went on to portray The Doctor throughout the entire time between the TV movie and the new series. He voiced The Doctor in all of the radio dramas for years and years. Then they brought him back again for a short bit to show how he went from his Doctor to John Hurt's War Doctor.
Valashar I know mate he’s my favourite doctor
@@menwithven2862 Oh. Cheers, then! :D At first read your first comment felt like a dig at his short time on screen. ^_^
Paul McGann at least had a whole movie on screen. David was talking about only possibly being on screen for 30 seconds.
Paul McGann is the longest running doctor ever lol. He’s done 25 years with no gaps
This two mans did history for me, it was anforgiveble.. all the movie, I'll never forget that both characters and the people who played them, The Doctor in so much more then a character, hi's more for me, thank you, David and Matt.
David's back again in 2023...fab!!
I kinda wish Matt had stayed just one more year. I feel like the issue with 11’s run is it ends a bit rushed and 12’s run starts a bit slow. I know people think we wouldn’t have gotten Capaldi if Smith did season 8, but Moffat expressed in an interview with Capaldi that Capaldi was the main person he’d been considering as the next doctor since seeing his work. So Capaldi probably would have been the front runner for 12 anyway.
Plus the original plan for 11 was to make him angrier in season 8, so we would have gotten more of the season 5 Smith vibes that was near perfection...and maybe 12 would have started with the rockstar uncle vibe he got in season 9 with a new companion and a fresh start.
Still, I loved all of Moffat’s seasons even if some of the episodes were hit and miss...but that’s just Doctor Who for ya
The best Doctors on and off screen 🖤 David explaining that attention shift 😆🔥 Matt giving away his watch 😆❣️
Two best Doctors right there, change my mind 🙏🏻
My two faviroute doctors
5:05 david: "what were we talking about?"
matt: "DoCtOr WhO"
ICONIC
Both of these guys are absolutely fantastic
My favorite doctors talking about the doctor. Amazing
Tennant loves to talk and being funny. Man two class bois are meeting and have a talk. This is so great.
Thanks for uploading this. I've watched the show since 1963(!) and these two, for me, along with William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton and Tom Baker are the most iconic and best Doctors, imho.
How old are you?
Me too
@@toptiercontent7123 I'm younger than my eyes and older than my teeth :-)
These 2 was the best modern doctors, untouchable in their acting skills for the doctor
These two bounce off of each other so well
Yes David, we missed you.
Two of the best doctors
I cant believe it has been 10 FLIPPIN YEARS!
The best two doctors
Watching this again after they skipped yet another Christmas and instead went for New Years. I get wanting to do something different and finding a time slot on NYD is infinitely easier than Christmas, but you just don't get the same magic anymore.
BBC management felt the Christmas Day specials were slowly getting buried in the overnight audience ratings, and that placing it on New Year's Day, like they did with the start of nearly every Sherlock season, it would gain more audience viewers, especially since by New Year's Day all the Christmas specials have been aired already.
Ah Doctor Who, a shame the new series only has 10 seasons right? ;)
Nobody:
Matt Smith: yeah.
just 10 minutes from these two wonderful doctors is better than anything ever created in doctor who once peter and j started.
I remember when I was eleven and twelve watching and loving this show. Every story was interesting and you felt like you were there. This show has made me cry so much and especially during the generation scenes. I pretty much gave up on series 11 and 12. I gave thirteenth a chance, it wasn’t because the Doctor I’ve grown attached to became a woman. It was trash writing. I dropped the show as soon as the Smiley Episode aired.
AAANNNDDD...David Tennant, slips out the side door...and walks of into the sunset...like a companion...at the end of the adventure.
Who just watched season 12 ep 1 😱
No Name I agree she’s not a doctor, it doesn’t seem right having a female doctor and 3 companions. And the super loud music constantly.
@@Chris-sh2ce give her time. She's the most kind doctor tho

this was posted on my birthday lol
Oh look at me I'm the Doctor I'm so cool OOPS I'M WEARING SAND SHOES
No one else is the the doctor to me except these two.
We would love if they kept doing Christmas specials
They should have a doctor who radio station
David: what are we talking about again? Oh yeah Doctor Who!
Matt’s mind: oh god...
(Matt pretty much has no expression on his face when David said that, he was just thinking about what he wants for dinner tonight)
Broke: "I don't wanna go!"
Woke: "Maybe I'll do the dodgie and stay a little bit longer."
Aw Mr. Smith made sure Mr. Capaldi didnt have crowds of people during his first episodeeee becuase he found it nerve wracking and didn't want Mr. Capaldi to feel as stressed as he did
-Knock knock?
-Who's there
-Doctor
-Doctor Who?
-Correct!
I love David and Matt. When David left I was so NOT going to like Matt but that lasted about 5 minutes.....love them both.
Those mah boys right there
My two ONLY favourite doctors PERIODT
“I don’t want to go”
It's kinda like graduating school. Little ceremony, then the show goes on.
That awkward moment where the guy in his late forties dresses younger than the person next to him who should be dressed more like the guy pushing fifty.
Infinity war is the most ambitious crossover in history

The idea of old Doctors starring in the Christmas Specials is BRILLIANT. Gives the regular cast a break, gives the audience a nostalgic treat, and gives a broader flavor to the Doctor Who Christmas Specials. Genius.
Shame there are no more Christmas specials
Yes, more of Doctors 4-8, the classics!
@@GuardeGame For now. Regimes change and so does DOCTOR WHO ;)
Oz Baxter, Inc. yea but they need to have a purpose other than nostalgia
I want an 8th doctor Christmas special now
"Ten years ago"
Oh. I just realised. Ten actual years.

Took the fucking long way around
No ten galactic years
Scary as fuck I remember being 9 watching end of time part 1&2 😂😂
Wow it doesn’t feel like it
When David is moaning about the show not being on Christmas Day anymore, you know what to do
What? Wallow in the despair of nostalgia?
I really miss christmas specials
I would want to scream back, "it has been changed to New Year episode." 😂😅
You act like Chibnall and ignore everyone around you that the house is on fire.
I really miss the Christmas special. Kind of upsetting that the last one was the river song one.
10 years ago to the day David Tennant regenerated. Feel old?
Wtf

and 7 years ago Matt Smith regenrated!

From Peter's point of view:
"You know, Matt gave me his watch. It was him passing on the mantle to me. It really meant a lot to me."
From Matt's point of view:
*UH, HAVE THAT.*
In what interview did Peter say that?
Random account No he actually did hand him his watch. Jenna Coleman has told this story and so has Peter in their own ways. They’ve only got the 1 watch so he has to hand it over for him to wear in the scene.
@@samfrisby6135 he mentioned this in a press interview for Series 8 in Australia I believe

It was amusing imagining Peter Capaldi saying that with the strong accent and the scowl he wore in his first episode

Watch day of the doctor
Their last words:
David Tennent “I don’t want to go!”
Matt Smith “I will always remember when The Doctor was me.”
9: Rose before I go I just wanted to say you were fantastic. And you know what, so was I.
"doctor I let you go"
13: holy shit this doctor sucked
Technically, I think 11 whispers "it's ok" as he's reaching out to Clara and finally changes. Great regen speech regardless
"Right then... Doctor Whoever I'm about to be. Tag, you're it"
Actually love David’s take on leaving too. One minute you are the focus the next you realise you are completely dispensable when the next guy walks in. I have never heard any of the other actors say that
David Tennant's Doctor saying "I don't want to go" was the one moment in the entirety of Doctor Who that made me cry.
Lynx me too
Also doomsday
When that moment was coming up, I KNEW he was going to say that...And when he did, I also cried.
I still cry when I watch it.

2 of the best doctors of all time.
These two are my favourite Doctors and i definitely want them back
Anyone at this point is better than Jodie in my opinion.
And Russell tooooo
If we could have multi-Doctor reunion Christmas specials from here on out, that would be my favorite thing I didn't know I wanted.
It could also be written by any of the past Who writers - given it wouldn't affect any plot etc of the current season - it would be perfect - also, can you imagine their bickering and interactions ! hehehe
Yes, totally agree. Christmas special deserves to come back. It feels so weird not to see one happening with current Doctor Who. Hopefully 2020 special happens with some familiar faces 😊
Best Christmas gift EVER! All through the holiday season, I'd be looking forward to seeing the doctors tease each other about their outfits and mannerisms and stupid things they'd each done.
... and what's River going to say when she's got 4 Doctors at once!?
Or better one set of doctors at Christmas another a new Year’s double the pleasure
The last 10 seconds of David asking about why is there no Christmas special anymore is exactly everyone's reaction to no Christmas specials happening anymore
Thank God they are back for Nctuti and RTD
"If I had to go back," Matt? The 60th anniversary is only three years away and we will be expecting you!
I was like "yeah right, three years, mate, sure thing" and then I realized. I've really been on this fandom for seven years already. Feel like yesterday I was watching the 50th y special!
That's if doctor who isn't cancelled at the point
Well said
Any chance that maybe Christopher Eccleston might have softened on the issue of returning by them?
@@Icekwondo jodie is a good actor but the writing is shit
I agree with David. What's going on people?! The Christmas specials are just that. SPECIAL!!!
Chyleen Dreyer inclusivity bullshit. That’s what it is
@@charlesman8722 i don't blame inclusivity, the only fault jodie has is that she fucks up her dialogue and ends up sounding whinny and annoying while being decent in all other points
These interviews are the best, the interviewer asked the question, then let the two guests go at it and bounce off each other
Ikr, I see a lot of late night shows where the interviewer doesn't let the celebrity speak and just interupts them with another question. Here, they actually let the actors talk
Hey who wants to start a petition with me to put the specials back on Christmas and give them to David Tennant and Matt Smith (and Christopher Eccleston and Peter Capaldi if they want) on alternating years?

I enjoy all the Doctors, but these guys are my favorites.
Their hair is the same but parted opposite and they sit the same.
They are the same person. 😉
@@ZNotFound No, they are two of the same person.
"Why aren't they doing it on Christmas anymore? What's going on, people?"
David speaking the mind of the fandom. It literally makes NO sense that they moved the specials to New Year's Day instead of Christmas. Though, given the politics at the BBC, that might be the least of our problems.
and on new years we discover it's just the first episode of the new season instead of a special, so they simply removed specials altogether
Makes perfect sense when the writing is disastrous as it is, along with the actor not being suited to be playing the doctor… Therefore you can blame it on the move to New Year’s day instead of Christmas Day, simples
@@thisisadebrown the actor is actually pretty ok, if not excellent to be able to do something with what she's given, the main problem is the writing. There are a few side problems too, like the fact the story doesn't need yaz and the deletion of the christmas special altogether (there was no new year special, it was ep 1 of the new season). The fact the new showrunner replaced the old team can be seen as negative too, as the director of photography is doing an awful job at doctor who. His plans would be great for any calm shows, but a show such as doctor who needs more movement and unordinary angles. While the new music is pretty harmonious and all, it doesn't feel like doctor who but more like a random serious show. It lacks epicness.
@swampy they moved christmas to new year then the year after removed new year... it's just like if a new showrunner came, replaced the original team by his own and took bad decisions, I wonder how it could happen.......
Lefties got their hands on Doctor Who and they hate Christians and Christmas
Imagine if there was a doctor who Christmas dinner, so like all the doctors were having dinner together XD
Film Star That happened not long ago for charity. Not Christmas and not all Doctors but about 5 of them had lunch together with fans
Munchiemox that’s pretty neat, but I meant like in a Christmas special, imagine that? XD
not all of them are alive tho :(

Fizzy_ Missy there would only be 10 docs instead of 14 tho 😕. Or 8 if Eccleston and the 8th doc don’t join.
I've enjoyed each of the "New" Doctor's up until Jodie Whittaker...not through fault of her own but the writing...not impressed with her 2nd season writing yet, but it's only 2 episodes in.
Fingers crossed they improved it
I'm so sorry about the finale. :(
@@1999colebug why? it was brilliant. I get that there is conflicting opinions, but not everyone hates it, so don't just assume someone hated it. The writing did greatly improve in this last season, though several episodes did seem quite rushed at the end of them.
Chrystalis Revival No one ever said everyone hates it. But to be fair a lot of viewers have dropped the show for good reason.

When Tennant says "both of us chose to leave" and Smith replies "yeah", he sounds so dejected - definitely get the impression that he regrets leaving when he did...
He‘s openly stated that he regrets not getting to do one more season, so that he could work with Jenna properly.
While I like parts of 7, it wasn’t the best final season for a Doctor. Was all over the place, and it’s probably because of it essentially being 2 mini seasons. Matt probably feels that as well.
