Thanks for showing me how to use a toilet auger without talking 15 minutes about other nonsense first. I’m a widow & rely on these videos so I don’t have to call a handyman that charges a $100 to do a 5 minute job then tries to tell me I need other things done when I really don’t.
Having made a career as a glorified handyman, I try to warn people like you about things that need to be done to avoid bigger bills later. I will also say, I do a lot of those 5 minute jobs free for people who I've established a working relationship with. Don't be too hard on us, a lot of good guys are just trying to do what you want and make a living.
THANK YOU SO MUCH. Me and my mom are living alone with just my little siblings and the drain was clogged but we didn’t want to call a handyman for a 100 bucks. Thank you so much !
Thank you so much! This video allowed me to keep my household title of “maintenance supervisor”. I went to Home Depot to purchase the snake, watched your video in the driveway. By the time my husband woke up the toilet was fixed!!! He thinks I’m a pro!! 😅😅
Your video is still helping 5 years later since your original post! I had been plunging for an hour and found this video. Went to Ace hardware store to buy a snake (FYI- any snake works , got mines for $18) . I followed your instructions to a T and after 2 times of “snaking” the toilet , flushed right down. Thank you so much 😊
Thank you, Mike! You went straight to the point without trying to show off with fancy production bells, whistles and annoyance. Please add a "$Thanks" gratuity button to this video.
I watched this video 1 times, anticipating this clog was going to be a headache. I cleared the clog with 3 passes (as recommended). Super helpful video, thank you for your content.
you really saved me with this video, i didn’t want to have to deal with maintenance at my apartment and now i have a new skill for life. thank you so much for making this!
Thank you! I thought the darn thing was stuck because reversing the handle was not brining the snake out of the toilet. A firm tug got it out! I also loved that your video was less than 3 minutes!!
Great video! Thanks for simplifying this concept. Also I have a tip, you could use a 5 gallon bucket to put the auger away instead of a trash bag, I find it’s easier and less messy! Thanks again.
As a former journeyman for a general contractor/plumber when I was in college, I had forgotten how to auger a toilet. I could not get the auger head through the traps. With heavy downward force, I could only get about a foot when the auger would coil back out. Spent two sessions for over an hour doing this. Frustrated, I watched several videos. THIS VIDEO is by far how I remember Eddy, the plumber/contractor taught me. You have to spin the handle w/downward pressure, just like Micheal shows. Let the auger head work by spinning and a lil angled pressure. Thanks.
Thank you so ever much for getting to the point along with visuals being to the point. You saved me so much money. Never did anything like this before but you got me through it. I researched 4 other videos before choosing your video.
Thanks Michael. That was the best, most informative instructional video for unclogging a toilet using a "Closet Snake/ Auger" I've seen. That should help a lot of people.

For some of us who don’t have too much upper body strength how do I get the stick back up? I do well with getting it down but that swift motion to take it out I can’t seem to do. Any suggestions?
Cant get it in.... and practicing on an unclogged toilet ......fyi. needed a fix for what I am doing wrong... no i am not scatching, ... but wont go in fast one foot!
Sometimes, it helps to stick the neck of the augers far in/up into the thought of the toilet as possible. So the lower you put your hands, the higher/farther into the thought the auger goes.
@michaelsumner13 Yeah I'm currently working as a maintenance tech and it was the first toilet where I had to use the auger. I was told by my coworker on how to use it but it was still didn't want to work for me. Right before I was about to call it quits and have him come show me how to do it, I said let me youtube it and I came across your video. Took me a few seconds and I had it unclogged. 🙏 again I appreciate your help. 💯💯
Omg I’ve watched soo many videos and could not get my auger down the drain so I bought a better one a 60$ one from Lowell’s a cobra one and still the saaammme thing I couldn’t get it down, glad you said to keep drilling down well it did lol and it was a small deodorant stuck.... it drilled a hole in the deodorant and when I pulled back up there it fking was!!!!!!
Sorry for the delay... but yes. It can be. Sometimes, you'll hook it and pull it out. Other times, you'll just push it through Tina bigge pipe can "handle it."
Our toilet was slow so i had the septic tank ckeaned thinking that was it, now i think there might be a partial block. Can i use my drain snake or do i have to buy one of these? Thank you young man!
I understand the question, but it's hard to say for sure. I'm not sure what drain snake you have if it's something similar, then I don't know why it wouldn't work. But the augur used in this video is specifically designed for toilets. But there are some rare cases of there being an obstruction that is enough to slow the flush of a toilet, but small enough to let the head of the snake sneak by it.
The plumber I hired used that auger twice and it didn't work so he noticed that there was a leak outside and the sewer was dried up. He was trying to get me to replace everything but I realize now that he didn't even try to unclog the line from the outside. If I bought an auger could I try to unclog it from the outside myself?
If I'm understanding this right, that is how it works. When you push the handle all the way I'm, the snake will be out. It stores I'm that position. There's usually a plastic clip that the end of the snake will clip into.
