  • The Raptor Response Shears are a "compact" alternative to the popular Leatherman Raptor [Rescue] trauma shears. Utilized commonly by EMS and other first responder agencies throughout the US the Leatherman Raptors are a high end piece of equipment that help expose injury sites expediently and with minimal patient movement.

I bought the original raptors when the first came out many years ago. I work EMS and I used them several times a month. One of my coworkers got me to try the X shear and I absolutely loved it. I have switched to carrying the X shears everyday for the past 2 years. I wear a 2" duty belt at work and I bought the case for them and it works for me. Nothing wrong with the raptors I just like the X shears better.

The Raptor's are a great device - really well built. However, I find them heavy and tricky to clean. They become finicky with lint build up, requiring a strip down. The X-Shears solve all of those problems.

For me personally (EMT-B), I don't see the Raptor Response shears as an upgrade to my Raptor Rescue shears. I've personally used the seatbelt cutter (haven't used the window punch) a few times and I don't see losing additional features as a benefit. I also really like the sheath that comes with the Rescue shears. I keep them folded and in the sheath until I need to use them, and then they go in the sheath unfolded if they get used. They stay locked in the sheath until I have time to clean them at the hospital. It's a pretty clean system for me.

Hey, great video as always, thank you!
As an EMT/Firefighter, and Ski Patroller, I own two pairs of the original shears, love them.
Like others have stated, I struggled at first with cleaning. Then I used an ultrasonic cleaner - game changer!
The next successful evolution in my cleaning journey was to put about 1/2 cup of hydrogen peroxide in a Ziploc bag. Put the shears in the bag, remove the air, and drop the whole thing in the ultrasonic cleaner. 5 minutes later the shears are clean, free of dirt and pathogens, and best of all you don't have to change the fluid in your ultrasonic cleaner.

I've carried the og raptors (rescue) mostly because my school would freak out over a normal multitool. My only problem with them is when I try and cut tough/thick material, the handles/grips are incredibly uncomfortable and even painful if I apply enough pressure trying to cut things. I am finally getting into my job as an EMT and was thinking about switching to these if they are more comfortable when squeezing really hard.

Now about those 511 pants. After a long nursing career I decided to take up a position as a patient transport officer with a private ambulance company. It was difficult to find a trouser comfortable to the task ahead. My son the paramedic suggested 511 pants, so taking the directive I tried on & purchased a pair of 511 black trousers with 5000 extra pockets that I was not aware of until I put my keys in my pockets.
I did everything bar a handstand to locate those keys & actually thought of removing my pants & doing the lost key jiggle.
Fortunately on my 50 dive into my pockets I managed to find those keys in the 4999 pocket dedicated to concealing a small derringer & two way radio. I still have those pants & they are worn only for hiking NOTHING goes in the pockets.

The new versions look like they are more comfortable/rounded to use with bare hands / thin gloves, which is the only gripe I have with the originals. Do you find that's noticeably the case? I just find the extra width folded is too noticeable carrying them in a front pocket like i do. I dont see the point of the cutting hookon shears; but the glass breaker is kinda nice to have i guess. I might take the stainless blades off and try to put them on the rescue ones just for kicks.

I've had issues with raptor shears. They are either too tight and wont open well, or too loose, or rust terribly. I sent my first set back to Leatherman at least 3 times and they never work as they should, for such an expensive set of shears. I switched to Xshears and have never looked back. My only grip with xshears are that they are a touch too big to fit in the innermost slot on 5.11's and that they could have easily fit an O2 wrench on the blade without compromising the blade and didn't do that (I have thought about trying to CNC an O2 wrench on the blade, but haven't done it yet).

Sharp pointy spike, always in the way, it tears gloves like a wolverine, it is sharp enough to scratch and bleed your finger, every time you try to use them. The fact Leatherman got rid of it is the best thing about the response model.

I’ve used the ring cutters just once on a Mva patient to cut like four five rings off of her fingers since her hand was swelling and we couldn’t get them off. Man. Those things cut through them like butter! I was surprised at the little effort it took! But these were thinnsh to medium sized rings. I’m sure mens ring might be a little tougher. Bottom line is they work!
I also use the o2 wrench on mine all the time. It’s just easier to use then having to look at where the wrenches are supposed to be but may not be.
I love the strap cutter. Only have used a few times to cut clothes or straps but it’s real easy to open water bottle cases with. Just zips right through that plastic shrink.
