      I can't seem to load the link for the auger file. Would it be possible to get it's name so I can look it up myself?
      Thank you

    I’m retired carpenter, years ago (late seventies) a coworker was off for a week and I had to use his lock installation kit, a jig that clamps around door and has the edge bore and cross bore lined up. All ya had to do was drill through with the spur bits. First time I nearly had to push hard as I could, looked at bits very dull. Sharpened them up and through like butter. He came back and thanked me for getting new bits from boss!! Told him they aren’t new just sharpened.

    As an electrician I use those bits alot. Honestly I couldn't figure out why so many other electricians couldn't figure out how to sharpen the bits.

    Dovetailing files have safe edges when made right also.

    So if you want to be boring, you need to get sharp first.

    Most files only cut in a forward/push motion, you will load your file with chips going back and forth and damage it long term.

      that is a common myth, but has been proven wrong time and time again.

    You can also get a "spinner" in the hole when a layer of the wood breaks off and keeps spinning with the bit

    How do you sharpen forstner bits?

    • @WoodByWrightHowTo
      @WoodByWrightHowTo  Рік тому

      For most of them you don't. Those some have sharpenable teeth. Generally, if tool is designed to be driven by a power tool, then it requires specialty equipment to sharpen.

    • @OldSneelock
      @OldSneelock Рік тому

      There are several different brands and configurations for Forstner bits. For the toothed Forstners I sharpen the teeth like I would a rip saw blade. I sharpen the radial edge with a file similar to how he explains to sharpen a wood auger.
      I tend to have older bits so recovering a butchered bit is a bit more involved than sharpening a bit that has been well taken care of.

    Is that the only reason they made certain files like that? I noticed, but never gave it enough thought.

      In general, yes. That particular shape of file is known as an auger file.

    First you run the auger at ridiculously high speeds with enough amounts pressure to get it hot enough for the metal to lose temper. Then get creative with an angle grinder. Wash rinse repeat until the Boss shows up with a new one. Or do the opposite of all that - follow this video and the boss will never buy new ones…
