    Fair play to you for making an engaging video, but I think you’d think differently if you had used an M rangefinder. It’s not at all about features, it’s about the experience. The camera is small, light, and fully manual. Being manual, the lenses are also far smaller and lighter than any other full frame systems. As such, it’s terrific for travel / street photography. My first Leica was an M6 and cost far, far less than your R5. I fell in love with it and ended up adding an M3 (for only £600, just a few years ago) and eventually was so hooked that I saved up for a digital M also. I promise you, you should try it. Get the cheapest film M you can find and have fun with it. If it’s not for you, the camera will have probably held / increased its value anyway. We’re honestly not all pretentious twits! Best of luck

      Thanks man! I appreciate the feedback- and I would love to try one, and honestly even coming up I think I’ll rent one if I can’t buy one! I’m genuinely super excited! And forgive me- I did not mean to indicate the Leica community to be pretentious twits- every community has flaws. Canon are some of the worst from my experience! (I should know I’m one of them!) if I’m being honest I’m watching the marketplace to snag a cheap rangefinder, as I’ve wanted one for a long time! Thanks for commenting man, and look forward to going down the Leica rabbit hole!

    When it comes to digital Leica I have no experience, but I definitely don't think those are what you should judge Leica by. I think these are meant to be judged in the film world, and in the film world, M series film cameras have a certain feel to them. I haven't bought one yet, but intend to someday, instead trying an M3 a friend inherited from his grandfather. I personally own a Canon VL2 which was from Canon's Leica copy/rangefinder series. Those are the cameras these lenses were made for and the ones that the brand should be judged on. Regardless I thought this was a great video. You rarely see people adapting Leica glass to modern digital, at least from what I can tell, so it was a unique perspective. You've gained a sub!

      Thanks a lot for watching/subbing man! It means a lot! If I’m totally honest the Leica M6 has been a dream camera for a while!
      I really want to try both digital and film Leicas so I can have a more informed opinion as a whole! I’ve long had a want to get a film camera that will live at my side- and a film Leica seems like the most likely to fill that spot. I hugely appreciate the recommendation too, and it’s cool to see the community of Leica has so many people willing to recommend cameras!

      @@CalvinDraht I love how the Monochrome shoots, however, I do think it’s an example of brand name being the worth of the camera. You can shoot monochrome preset on most DSLRs nowadays and achieve similar results. Definitely suggest exploring eventually getting a film Leica. For me I know it’s a few years away hence why I got a Canon Rangefinder in the meantime. Looking forward to what you have in store!

    • @CalvinDraht
      @CalvinDraht  Рік тому +1

      @@GrainOnTheGo Yeah man! The only thing that I have trouble with regarding the monochrome is even the option of using a DSLR in color, and saving that info. Lightroom and other photo editing software allow you to then edit the image and brighten/darken certain colors. (and of course, this is now possible without looking strange due to the black and white) I would love to see a MK2 version that maybe even has a mapping software/sensor to re-introduce that feature without losing the resolution that removing the color filter grants. Just an interesting concept! And that makes sense! I look forward to making more content! Its super encouraging to have people like you along for the ride!

    Well, I'll never be able to own a Ferrari, or a Rolex or a Leica (probably). But I think there is a pretty conclusive body of evidence that these high end consumer items have enough appeal that people find them ' worth it '. Personally, I don't find value in pretension, but I do find value in ' the user experience ' which is why I have kept my mirrorless cameras but have also added a nice Nikon DSLR to my modest fleet of cameras; because I like using it. It's tough, durable, the batteries don't die in minutes, they die in days. I also trust people who own Leicas that say their user experience has to be first hand to be understood. Maybe someday. Good video !

  • @rio_nakayama

    yes it is worth it. Yes I know Leica is not the best camera. I have M10-D now, my Fuji X-Pro 3 is much much better, My old Nikon D810 was far better. But the M10 is by far the most fun I've had with a camera and made me take picture more, and I've never looked back.

    Almost $9K for a manual focus 35mm rangefinder, no video etc etc?
    Fuji offers medium format kit below that price. As much as I admired classic mechanical film cameras which can only take photos, with high price tag I expect more features. For me, it's hard to resist Fuji's offerings.
    I understand the appeal of minimalism. I have some Leica screw mount bodies. So small that sometimes I forget it's inside my jacket's pocket. But for a really high price tag? Nahh... maybe I'll call it elitism, instead :p

    • @CalvinDraht
      @CalvinDraht  Рік тому

      If I’m honest I see the appeal, it’s super cool! For me personally I think it’s a hard sell. I think in a less competitive market Leica would make a killing- but as it is, Leica needs to prove themselves above competitors (atleast to me) to justify even considering one of their M style bodies.
      Though I sure do like how they look!

    • @anta40
      @anta40 Рік тому +1

      @@CalvinDraht I think Leica don't need to prove themselves above competitors because they have a long established market: mostly deep pocketed enthusiasts (dentists, lawyers), collectors, and celebrities. After all, they were one of (if not the only) early pioneers of 35mm format. So yeah, they are still historically relevant. But if you want more innovation (on a more competitive price), the Japanese outdo them decades ago. Oh, I also agree Leica M cameras (both film and digital) are good lookers 😁

    I think there are a few issues with your video. First, the M11 can’t lock up its mirror because it’s a mirrorless camera. Second, it’s not uncommon for digital devices to need firmware updates. Leica has done this with their digital cameras to fix bugs, improve functionality, and add features. Third, while modern Leica cameras and lenses are very expensive, there’s nothing quite like them in terms of compactness (without compromising quality) and simplicity (fewer buttons and less complex menus, and yes, no video on the M11, which I prefer. Fourth, Leica convinced Kodak to alter their sensor microlens arrays to better accommodate the extreme angles that light can makes at the sensor edges with some Leica M lenses. I’m not sure how many other companies cared about this sort of thing.
    Have you actually used an M11, M10 Monochrom, CL, SL2 (or SL2-S) extensively and compared their results with the other cameras you mentioned?

    • @CalvinDraht
      @CalvinDraht  Рік тому +4

      Thank you for your feedback!
      Forgive me- what I intended to say was the Leica M11 had the shutter/camera lock up entirely making it completely unusable until the battery was removed and replaced. I agree, its actually very good practice to keep updating your product after releasing it! Even my canon got an update recently that added more video settings- I appreciate it!
      That said what I'm criticizing the fact that they left such a large bug in the firmware, and that small (but serious) things like this seem to keep happening on Leica hardware. While no company is immune and all have had this trouble, its been common enough ive decided to mention it. not to mention at the price point.
      Now, its true that Leica does release compact, well made products, but I am bringing price into the conversation. If that value preposition is good to you- then wonderful! Though I could make an argument for Ricoh- the Fuji X100 line, and several other wonderful cameras doing a very good job at a cheaper prices , albeit (like all products) with strengths and drawbacks. While simplicity is good in some ways- and I am very glad that the removal of a video feature makes this camera more appealing to you. Though it does unfortunately mean that it flat out lacks a capability that most cameras have. I would love to try a M11, M10 Monochrome, CL, SL2 (or SL2-S) if you happen to have to cash to pick one up for me! ;) But unfortunaly I'm just looking at raw data. That said- I may rent one in all seriousness to see if it really is that good! Again- I hugely appreciate the passion you carry for the Leica brand, enough to make a comment about it!

    • @johnkasianowicz6536
      @johnkasianowicz6536 Рік тому +1

      From what I’ve heard, the issue was not common to all M11 cameras (and not common at all). If it had been, then Leica would have undoubtedly discovered the bug before releasing the camera. That doesn’t dismiss the hassle some folk’s experienced, but one of reasons I buy Leica camera products is that I know they’ll stand behind their products (including firmware upgrades to fix bugs, improve the performance, and add features).
      You were critical of the Leica M10 Monochrom, but it sounds like you haven’t played with one (you should). I use a Q2 Monochrom and am blown away by its performance every session. The camera is robust and fun to use.
      You were also claiming that at the high end, Leica is simply pretentious, and implying that the M10 Monochrom and M11 cameras (and the high-performance lenses that support them) aren’t worth it. While I may soon buy a Nikon Z7 II (a great mirrorless camera for the price, and that has some great glass to support it), the Leica M11 and SL2 cameras are simpler and therefore for me more enjoyable to use (I’ve used Nikon cameras for decades and their digital camera menus are far from simple).
      The four Leica digital cameras I have (Q2 Monochrom, CL, M11, & SL-2) are superb quality, and have similar menu structures, which makes it relatively easy to swap cameras and just use them.
      It’s easy to bash expensive equipment, but if you haven’t used it, IMO the comments/opinions carry no weight. Frankly, I have no use for fast or exotic cars (I drive a 1998 Volvo station wagon), and have absolutely no desire to spend lots of money on them, but I can appreciate that someone else would spend their hard-earned cash on high-end autos.

    • @johnkasianowicz6536
      @johnkasianowicz6536 Рік тому

      Also, the old Leica lens you purchased was a Summaron (f/2.8), not a Summicron (f/2).

    • @CalvinDraht
      @CalvinDraht  Рік тому +4

      I was rather critical of a camera that only shoots black and white- an objective removal of a feature. However I am not criticizing the the M11, and M10 because they are expensive. I am simply stating its interesting that at a higher price they have less features, and that seems to not make very much sense in many scenarios. Again, I am very glad that you like Leica- and have brought up some interesting points! I am excited to one day try more Leica lenses, and cameras! However, on paper, they seem very lacking. Again because something is more enjoyable for you- or even for me, doesnt mean its the best option overall. And it certainly doesn’t mean it doesn’t have room to improve (IBIS, Color, Video, this is for all cameras, not just Leica). Now, it is easy to bash Expensive equipment if you haven’t used it. But removing the radio from a Ferrari doesnt make it immediately a better car because they offer less. Good car choice btw! I have the s90 sedan. Volvo knows how to make a cool car!
      Oh. Also at about 45 seconds into the video- I call it the Leitz Summicron 35mm F2.8? Or are you referring to the in the description where I call it the Leitz 35mm F2.8 summicron? I guess its Summaron. But I cant help but feel your really stretching here- but - thanks for fixing my fast reading habit!
      In any case, I do hope you continue to enjoy your Leica, and have many years of good photos!
