Saw it yesterday. Never heard of it or Ali Abbasi before in my life. And in a matter of two hours he renewed my faith in cinema. Not since Gaspar Noe's Irreversible has a director been able to weave together the strings of unfathomable cruelty into such an earth shattering gem of celluloid gold. 5 stars easily. Best movie I've seen in over a decade. A tale of two parts that leaves the viewer undecided as to which half was more appalling.
I don't know why some people misunderstood the concept The movie is based on true events and the reason because its so offensive to some people is because its completely true and its unfortunately the ugly truth. The whole purpose of the movie is not to offend the prophet (imam reza). Its about taking advantage of imam reza's name and twisting a religions value to do dirty works in a city. The city is corrupted and people are using the prophets name to cover up their shit and kill people and as you saw hookers are freely doing their job while it's a taboo and forbidden thing to do in Iran and the movie is bringing these up just to show everyone what is really going on in one of the holiest cities in Iran Its killing women in the name and behalf of God and honor murders ( which is an extremely serious issue and happening time to time in Iran)
Like the director said it seems to be a cultural issue in iran that's not necessarily political or even religious. Misogyny has been deep-rooted in these people's minds and it won't go away easily.

Furthermore, they were shocked when the rapes committed by their cold case files, those 'mysterious stranger in the bushes' started matching up with the reports where the victim knew her attacker; a friend or work colleague.
It follows a pattern that has been reflected in many countries and societies. Justifies himself with morals in a very twisted way (in this case religion), disallows himself to feel remorse because to admit that his actions are wrong means accepting he has no purpose. The striking thing was how he was emboldened. He had supporters, the police were suspected to let it slide, even his own son was proud of him. Though it's not a surprise. Serial killers can have copycats, mass shooters take inspiration from previous ones. It's the ideology that spreads like a disease. And that spread isn't confined to just Iran.
Just saw the spider killer movie on Netflix. A truly profound piece. I found myself very angry at the movie. Not because it was bad. But because it was true. I was triggered to the point where I had to stop watching. My heart hurts for woman in vulnerable situations. Doesn’t matter how advanced our world has become it seems we will always be less than. I hope we can all heal and grow from this.

So far, I have only seen 2 movies made by Iranians which are really interesting, one of which is this movies Holy Spider and a movies with the title Children of Heaven (1997).
This has been released recently in October 2022. So you have to check your read cinemas. This is not a commercial film so it's being released into film festivals and cinemas which show foreign films, documentaries etc.

Not true. I'm from Mashhad and I well remember back in those day khorasan newspaper was publishing the news about saieed Hanayee every day. I clearly remember then even said in khorasan that some of his victims were among normal women not prostitutes. Every body was against them but his family and his neighbours were on his side and were defending him. But clergy and judge at the court were against him that's why gave him death penalty. I got the impression that it shows the CORRUPTION of true Islam, also the kind of Western viewer watching these Art Films are usually quite well educated and many know the actual history of Iran quite well (the American led coup, Mossadegh, The Shah, Anglo-Iranian Oil Company etc) and understand the difference between pure Islam and some more devious versions. A man who went to war, came back mentally ill and no sense of purpose, finds it in the only way he's familar: violence. Justifies himself with morals in a very twisted way (in this case religion), disallows himself to feel remorse because to admit that his actions are wrong means accepting he has no purpose.
The striking thing was how he was emboldened. He had supporters, the police were suspected to let it slide, even his own son was proud of him.
Though it's not a surprise. Serial killers can have copycats, mass shooters take inspiration from previous ones. It's the ideology that spreads like a disease. And that spread isn't confined to just Iran.

Just saw the spider killer movie on Netflix. A truly profound piece. I found myself very angry at the movie. Not because it was bad. But because it was true. I was triggered to the point where I had to stop watching. My heart hurts for woman in vulnerable situations. Doesn’t matter how advanced our world has become it seems we will always be less than. I hope we can all heal and grow from this.

I'm Iranian,and the thing is that there's a French movie with the exact same subject (a serial killer killing street girls based on a true story ) but it didn't get as much attention as this Iranian movie. I feel like they just praise movies that show the ugly side of Iran. With the intention of ruining the Iranian reputation. These things unfortunately happen all around the world..

I haven’t seen the movie so I can’t judge, but the killer was trialed and hanged by the government only one year after his arrest. I’m just curious if that part, ending, is included in the movie.

Not true. I'm from Mashhad and I well remember back in those day khorasan newspaper was publishing the news about saieed Hanayee every day. I clearly remember then even said in khorasan that some of his victims were among normal women not prostitutes. Every body was against them but his family and his neighbours were on his side and were defending him. But clergy and judge at the court were against him that's why gave him death penalty. I'm not defending the retarded regime but at least in this case he didn't have the government 's support

They didn't basically condemn the murder of those women, but they said it had to be delt in a legal way, which as we all know, means execution by the government.

The news of Saied Hanayee was on shabake Khorasan and local newspapers. I never heard anyone defend him but his family and few people from ghettos of Mashhad. He had raped those women and some weren't even street women. No way they could be on his side.

What a disgrace! In the USA, every day, 100 people are shot to death by gun violence and 200 more are injured. Nobody calls America a "mass killer society". There are 400, 000,000 guns in circulation in USA. If there is a "mass killer society" anywhere, it would be the USA, not Iran.
