Today we're looking at the new Seiko 5KX, reference number SRPD51, the successor to the popular Seiko Dive Watch, the SKX009. Is it better than the classic SKX or does it come up short? That's what we're trying to answer today.
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Thanks for watching!

Im so close to pulling the trigger on this blue one with a mesh bracelet...simply a classic wonderful design ...and for the skeptics who are commenting from the bottom of the Mariana Trench about the missing 100ft of water resistance....Nobody wears a mechanical watch for suba diving anymore. You wear a depth computer. The 1960s was a great time but its over.

For me, the new 5 line is a better watch overall. Yes, the 200m WR is gone, but 99% of people doesn't need it (I use my every single dive watch for swimming and snorkeling) and everything else is better on the new models: dials, movement and the bracelet. Personally, the SKX was one of the biggest disappointments in my watch journey, and this is why I had mine for only a few months and have replaced it with the latest Orient Triton which comes with Sapphire, hacking movement and way better overall quality (for cca €200). Btw, love your videos, keep up the good work! 👍

This is so helpful. I honestly never realized the new Seiko 5 wasn't a dive watch. I need to pay more attention to the specs and not just the design! The 5 is a nice looking piece. I hope it brings new people to the fun hobby to timepieces!

I own this same watch and I love it. It is not meant to be a replacement for the SKX, Seiko has plenty of other watches that are ISO certified if that’s what you need. I like that I can hand wind it without having to unscrew the crown. You might want to exchange it because I have no issues with the bezel or the crown on mine..Thanks for showing it beautiful watch.

Great review. I don’t think Seiko consider this a successor to the skx. They have the prospex line for that. Also, the skx wasn’t a Seiko 5.

I honestly don't mind the non screw down crown and display case back. I don't dive anyway, so 100m is just fine for me. But I do wish it was around 40mm with a 20mm lug width. I think if it were more in line w/ the SKX013 then I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

Nice video. I have this watch, you should probably get your crown checked by Seiko as that experience doesn't seem right. Mine is perfect. İt's a huge improvement on the SKX, I have had one for years and they are very reliable scuba diving watches to use as a safety backup. I've also used the SRPD51 diving. It's fine down to 100m and beyond. Seiko always understate what a watch can really do for safety reasons. They're usually ok for an extra 25% depth over the dial, so you could take it too 125m before the possibility of it leaking. Have a Vostok too, that could probably go to 500m without a leak as the acrylic crystal makes a stronger seal the deeper it goes! Anyway, my point is that the new 5kx dive watches will have no problem with swimming, snorkeling, and diving within the 100m range. If you dive a lot probably best to keep to 50m depth to reduce overall stress so your watch will last for many years. Very few divers go below 50m anyway and 100m and lower dives are very rare except for deep sea oil rig divers, and robots are doing a lot of that repair work these days. I do some shipwreck diving so I've done some 100m+ dives. The dive computer is more important though, the watch is purely backup if you're going very deep and the computer stops working, you need to be able to time your ascent to the surface.

Since this line of 5 Sports options dropped I've largely resisted them as most of the colorways didn't do much for me. I just recently picked up a SRPE71 (silver dial, solver YachtMaster-style relief bezel) when Amazon put them on sale for $180usd. With a colorway that will easily be a strap monster, a bit different look to the bezel, and under $200 from a trusted source made it an easy decision

I think the new Seiko 5 Sports line is a great addition to Seiko's portfolio opening their products to a new target audience. Especially with their last year's models which left the diver look. This way I can fully say: Yes, great approach from Seiko, but yes it is not a successor of the SKX line. But to be fair: That was never intended by them.
I own the Japanese version SBSA001 which I have bought in Tokyo in 2019 shortly after its release. I never considered it being a diver watch and a successor of the SKX, despite the obvious reasons to do so. That is why I enjoy wearing this time piece.

Thanks for watching and for the message buddy! Regarding the idea of it being a successor to the SKX. I guess since it’s in the SKX case with the same bezel, crystal, hands and very similar dial - it has to be looked at through that lens and compared to the SKX, at least in my opinion.

I had not heard someone talk about the crown that way before. Seems like a plus tho for a non screw down crown to be difficult to pull out. I'm not sure I could get my head around the 100m wr. I've had my kicks with this case design having owned skx007 and 009 since I got into watches earnestly. If I needed a new skx I might sooner look at the islanders just for the water resist. Then again I'm sure you'd daily this watch for 5 years in the shower and pools and never have it leak. I think we all worry too much about wr.

  • @Zeeraha
    @Zeeraha 3 роки тому +2

First, a really good review. To me the "5KX" is a dissapointment because it does not bring the security of the screwdown crown, and the hardlex crystal is subpar compared to the competing Orient diver models featuring saphire within the same price range. Finally, the 4R36 movement is still of poor quality despite offering some cool features. It has plastic dial feet which are not secured by screws and may break upon moderate shock, and they are difficult to repair, especially if once broken dial feet end up falling inside of the movement. Further, the calendar-works are made of plastic and it will break after few years of continous operation, plus it is difficult to repair them. For the Seiko brand, good quality models begin with the 6R35 movement, but the price of these models start from at least 650$ mark, which is already well inside Swiss brand price range e.g. Tissot, and inside that price range they offer divers with chronometer certification. It looks like Seiko went upmarket so high, way out of their league.

    • @DadMichoMurphy
      @DadMichoMurphy Рік тому +2

The dial feet are not plastic in a 5kx - they are metal. However, the movement ring is plastic, common for nearly all Seiko watches with 4x movements. The dial feet push into this plastic movement ring, rather than screwed down (Miyota) or a bladed attachment mechanism (ETA).
The dial feet are not susceptible to getting into the movement, unless you break it off during modding (yes that is easy to do) and happen to drop it in without seeing it. The plastic parts are pretty solid, and honestly its a darn simple and reliable way of casing the movement that actually adds shock resistance.
I have had many many 4rX, 6rX movements, same with the 7s, and I have NEVER had the date components fail, NEVER. They are easily damaged when modding however - but they never need service of any kind. I'd like to meet anybody that has had issues here.
Contrast that to having any ETA/Sellita of any flavor, one accidental date change during the wrong hours and snap, your date feature is broken, necessitating an expensive service (with parts) for several times more than the entire cost of one of these movement, likely the same as the cost of this entire watch.
The famed SKX had the same Hardlex crystal, and while sapphire is nice, this is a $200ish watch. Seiko's partner Orient may have sapphire crystals close to this price, but very few others do.
For this purpose, Hardlex is durable, less likely to shatter and is easily (cheaply) replaced if you really want a sapphire crystal in this budget watch. Oddly the Hardlex crystal has an anti-reflective quality that is superior to the readability of sapphire that is uncoated with AR. It isn't easy to scratch in these watches either because it is recessed pretty far into the bezel.
This is an outstanding budget watch. While it is not an ISO diver, it is suitable for everything but that in the water. Dive watches are not used much for diving anymore, except as a backup to the computer. I'd be more likely to wear my apple watch ultra than my shiny, expensive diver.
I get you aren't a fan - move up market. There are lots of options in the $1k and over category. This is a wonderful and reliable choice for an entry level automatic watch. There are only a few others that can touch it, and probably have the same movement, or the yucky jittery 82xx movements with indirect seconds hand drive from Miyota.

Personally I wouldn't consider the new line of Seiko Sports 5 to be the successor to the older SKX divers. View the new Sport 5 as successor to only the old Sports 5 with biggest upgrade being the movement - everything else in specs seem the same. To me the Prospex series is a better comparison & successor since it is more on par with it being a 200m dive watch plus on some models sapphire crystal & ceramic bezel. Those are upgrades in many peoples mind & maintaining a 200m diver. Still enjoyed video & since I have an older Sports 5 nice to see a review of newest model. Sadly don't believe I'll be buying a new Sports 5. Looking at a Prospex & recently bought an Orient with each having upgrades over the Sports 5.

I'm going to buy this watch as a day to day use because of the price. Then when I brake it or scratch it I don't cry a river. I have a Certina DD Powermatic 80 and a Seiko Presage blue enamel. Those I don't want to use as a daily watch because the cost of it if something happens.

Even if they wanted to make it 100 m rating they could’ve left the screw down crown… It was already part of the case design so they purposely took it away for no good reason. No lume PIP so timing things in low light is no longer possible… Hacking doesn’t really matter with the specifications of the 4R movement. It is a dive ‘style’ fashion watch now.

I really miss the screw down crown. The crown on mine was not great. The case design doesn’t work well with a crown that always stays down flat to the side of the case.

I seriously hate these types of reviews. I’ve seen several videos like this about this watch.
I’m new to watch collecting and looking to buy my first automatic watch. I also like how divers look. I can’t even swim btw, so I could care less about the diving rating. I have never heard about the SKX until I started watching videos on the SRPD. All I want to know is if the watch is made well and will stand the test of time. I hate when reviewers forget the fact that new watch collectors have not experienced prior versions of watches.

I've only watched 3 minutes of the video, but stopped it so I can give my take on this question without being influenced by yours.
The big question is - where does Seiko wanna go for the next decade? There is a whole new young customer market out there, and they have lost of money, so Seiko are changing things up a bit.
The successor to the SKXes are the newer Prospex line (woah, they have movements that hand wind and hack!) and that is where you find the actual divers watches. Yes they don't have much mod appeal but that is because the range has grown somewhat. Models of all things change and adapt - a Golf I and a Golf 6 are both Golfs but also very very different, the 1 has a mod market but the 6 does not. The SKX grew up and became Prospexes. And it never was a Seiko 5.
The 5KX is not an SKX and to me that's a dumb association - it's the new Seiko 5 range. The whole range has been rebooted as Seiko have basically stopped producing the entire old range and only make the new, and they are marketed at those young customers with money. Some say "but the 5KX looks so much like the SKX, even the dial is practically the same and the hands are identical!"
That is because the new Seiko 5 divers are a knock-off of Seiko's own diver heritage. Not quite the same kind of knock off as Steinhart v Rolex but you get the idea. Another way of looking at it is Seiko upped the game on their Divers and the new Seiko 5s slotted in below as a lower spec pretender

It has better lume and a much better movement than the SKX as mentioned here. But I don’t like “dive style” watches, just disingenuous to me, even if the majority never actually go diving with them. Especially one modeled after an affordable diver legend like the SKX. But it does come in a huge variety of color variations with some crazy special editions too. Aimed at the more style conscious youth market I suppose. But if it manages to get more younger people into the watch enthusiast sphere, then great. Anyway, even if I’m not keen on it, I don’t hate it either.

Definitely not a successor. Seiko has a whole range of ISO Prospex models for those who need proper divers. Those are more upmarket in price, yes... but then we all know Seiko has been needing to creep away from the budget image for a while. This is a dive-style watch for budget-conscious, looks-oriented buyers and the fact that there are dozens of colour, textural and strap variations (not even counting limited releases) is testament to that. It's not for me, but it deserves its success and is a clever and necessary line extension for Seiko.

None of our criticisms are valid for a $179 dollar jeweled movement automatic watch. They are not even valid for a $179 dollar Seiko sports watch.
I have a collection of 10 Swiss watches. I purchased one of these Seiko 5 automatics at Costco for $179. As for the bracelet, I take them off and use NATO straps. I have paid $200 dollars just for 1 link on a Ulysse Nardin bracelet. The bracelet on this Seiko is fine for $179 with an automatic watch added to the price. For that price it's a great watch. It does not have a screw down crown so yes, it is not a dive watch. But for swimming boating, being in the water on the surface it's just fine. All this talk of dive watches is stupid anyway since divers no longer use watches. I am a diver and have used computers for at least 25 years. And less then 1 in 500,000 dives is at 100 meters. Is this a great watch at 300, 400, 500 no but at 179 its a great watch. I can swim with a Rolex Sub at a price of $10,000 or swim with this Seiko for $179. There is a place for high end watches and there sure as hell is a place for this Seiko. Great watch.
