Lyrics: Fare thee well, ye icy acres Fare thee well, ye whaling grounds Fare thee well, ye banks of Greenland Weary whalers homeward bound Homeward breezes bend the blossom Where the oak and the apples grow God forgot the green in Greenland Made the flowers from ice and snow Fare thee well, ye icy acres Fare thee well, ye whaling grounds Fare thee well, ye banks of Greenland Weary whalers homeward bound Home where grasses lace the meadows By the waters running free And the rivers sweetly flowing Turn towards the open sea Fare thee well, ye icy acres Fare thee well, ye whaling grounds Fare thee well, ye banks of Greenland Weary whalers homeward bound Six long months we've been a-hunting Through a hell of frozen flame Now like sails, our hearts are billowing As we turn for home again (x2) Fare thee well, ye icy acres Fare thee well, ye whaling grounds Fare thee well, ye banks of Greenland Weary whalers homeward bound
This is so stunningly beautiful! I've been a fan of Katie's voice ever since she appeared on one of your earlier streams and sang Northwest Passage with you, and I would absolutely love to see more collaborations like this 💙 Thank you so much for brightening up my evening after a long day at work with this video!
My two year old requests this song and Mingulay every night I have him ("Icy Acres" and "Heave Ho Song! Heave ho song, please"). Beauty goes a long way to sustaining hearts, and thank you all for creating and sharing. You help a little one find his way to sweet rest on his way to Dream.
@@Denley1526 When "Leave Her Johnny" came out, we had to watch it over and over until he figured out the words he wanted to be able to sing. He just turned three and his Nana and Papa got him a ukulele and keyboard for his birthday. He knows all the band member's names now and wants every instrument he sees them playing. I am okay with this :)
@@sou_agua Don't forget the mandolin, double bass & harmonium - all added in the last couple of years, not forgetting Andy's banjo & Dave's set of tin whistles!! Sounds like you have a future very talented musician there!! We have photos of JD at the piano from around age 2 & he had a first size guitar when he was very young too. They are never too young to start :)
You all never cease to impress me with your sheer talent to harmonize and sing an amazing song! You all and Katie Sky did such an amazing job of making this song express the feelings of leaving and coming back to home in Greenland! Great job again, and I'm glad you all are blessing us with music even when we are still stuck at home!
Absolutely fantastic lady and gents! I love seeing collaborations you all come up with. Can't wait to see how Leave Her Johnny is going to turn out with everyone
Couldn't comment because livestream was running when this was premeiering! Have this engagement you ADEQUATE lads! (Now to repeat this about 100 more times)
This is superb. Her voice blends perfectly with you dudes.' Who wrote the song? How about Longest Johns and Friends for your next album? This could go straight on.
I've been listening to this at least once a day since you've released it. I'm just stunned. I'm love singing but often can't figure out where I fit in. I believe that my range is somewhere between the bass and baritone (I can't quite comfortably hit the two lowest notes in this piece), so I was hoping that you all could do something that demonstrates the different vocal ranges. Or if you've already done this, could you please reference it? Thanks so much!
@@thelongestjohns At the risk of being "that guy at the back of the folk club" (sorry), it's not actually a trad number. It was written in 1972 by a chap called Colin Wilkie (who apparently lives and performs mostly in Germany nowadays). There's a mudcat thread about it here: mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=13966
I love that isolation hasn't stopped you guys from making new music.
No chance of that stopping us :) Thanks for the support
@@thelongestjohnsis this something that will be published to Spotify? It’s never showed up to this day.
Lyrics:
Fare thee well, ye icy acres
Fare thee well, ye whaling grounds
Fare thee well, ye banks of Greenland
Weary whalers homeward bound
Homeward breezes bend the blossom
Where the oak and the apples grow
God forgot the green in Greenland
Made the flowers from ice and snow
Fare thee well, ye icy acres
Fare thee well, ye whaling grounds
Fare thee well, ye banks of Greenland
Weary whalers homeward bound
Home where grasses lace the meadows
By the waters running free
And the rivers sweetly flowing
Turn towards the open sea
Fare thee well, ye icy acres
Fare thee well, ye whaling grounds
Fare thee well, ye banks of Greenland
Weary whalers homeward bound
Six long months we've been a-hunting
Through a hell of frozen flame
Now like sails, our hearts are billowing
As we turn for home again
(x2) Fare thee well, ye icy acres
Fare thee well, ye whaling grounds
Fare thee well, ye banks of Greenland
Weary whalers homeward bound
Every time I listen I'm struck at how lovely Katie's voice is. Truly a joy to listen to. And such a treat to hear her and Robbie sing together. 💕
MATIES FOR KATIE
Ha, love it :)
The perfect song to go to sleep too, I know how I'm sleeping the rest of lockdown.
That sounds wonderful, hope you sleep well as a result
All good tidings to you and your new sweet child!

That is so lovely that your little one loves those Longest Johns songs. JD's (bass singer) baby loves him singing & playing guitar to him too :)

Beautiful song & fantastic harmonies. Did Dave write it?
Traditional song, we've sung it lots with Loc'tup together at festivals in the past

This is a question that's bothered me for a minute now. Who sings the bass parts on your pieces?
Also I love your work; thank you guys so much!!
It's JD - the guy in the bottom left for most of the video. He has an incredible range.
Ewok's correct, and also thank you very much :)
how do you guys do that multi screen thing, i should like to know.
How are they doing this with the .25 second delay of video calls/discord/and almost every site
RandomHistory if I had to guess they would’ve sung it alone while recording then spliced the audio together
All of the Johns are wearing headphones, most likely singing along to Katie's track.
Now it's four children and an amazing singer
