- General Martin Dempsey was were inducted to the Irish America Hall of Fame at the Metropolitan Club in Manhattan. He ended his acceptance speech by singing “The Irish Pub” by the High Kings.
Dempsey served as the 18th chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, for which he served two terms, and is a retired U.S. Army general who also previously served as the Chief of Staff of the Army.
Dempsey was raised in Goshen, New York to a heavily Irish-American family. His grandparents were born in counties Sligo, Mayo, Roscommon, and Donegal and he holds a master’s degree in literature from Duke University, where he wrote his thesis on the Irish literary revival. Dempsey has also learned conversational Irish from childhood summers spent in Ireland.

What a great song. The soldiers must love this leader. We need these songs now more than ever. The pandemic has allowed me to browse You Tube and find beautiful music. Perhaps General Dempsey could sing Grace - beautiful Irish song. I heard it sung for the first time by Rod Stewart and it was so beautiful. Very sad song but beautiful.

President Obama's mom, I hear, was Irish. What a beautiful gentleman and a scholar.
@@joebyrne3159 the qualities that belong to a gentleman are universal and President OBama is not short on these qualities. Sounds like Mr. Panda was being funny or perhaps he has issues with the Irish and therefore uses an opportunity like this to express same. I am Irish - yes, for generations past - but I have come to sort of understand when sarcasm toward another race is used!! However, I am quite happy with being irish and hope others are happy with his/her background. Am sure General Dempsey had to lead people from all races - his qualities as a gentleman, I feel, helped to make him a general. There is a book about the origins of the Irish and it is very interesting. There is another book by philosopher Krishnamurti who has a deep understanding and insight of and to the human race. Title:"Think on these things now." God bless you and your "one line" response to Mr. Panda - might I say "to the point!"
