The good thing is Fuji can be relied on for software updates so I’m hoping that they’ll improve the stabilisation algorithm. The eterna film simulations looks beautiful, hope they make that available to the Fuji XT20.
Just another new camera. I'm a photographer, I take pictures and could care less about video. I'm really getting tired of buying a camera and then just start to learn the features and then "poof" another new camera shows up that supposed to be so much better. I bought a X-T2 and really like it.....no NEED for a new camera. The same as with the Nikon D850. I already own the D810 and I'm really happy with it.
At about 6:55, this is not a new IS Menu that allows you to choose between full time and shutter press IS for the viewfinder, this is available on the X-T2. I already have 5-stop IS with the 50-140 and 100-400 based on my own handheld tests with the X-T2. I don't shoot video so no upgrade for me.
Hey Gordon. Interesting first look and props for taking the time to responds to all the comments-even the rude ones. This is complete OT but I wish someone would ask Fujifilm why they don't offer a 24-105 equivalent zoom in their line up. It would be extremely useful for the travelers among us who find the that the 18-135 isn't wide enough, sharp enough or fast enough. Next time you get a Fujifilm manager in a room and can't think of a good question, feel free to ask this one. :-)
You're right, a 16-70mm would be nice. I think they feel they have it all covered though with the 16-55mm, 18-55mm and 18-135mm, plus their XC models too.
I understand that you're just speculating, Gordon, but if you were Fuji I would point out that there is a significant difference between 16mm and 18mm on the wide end; and a significant quality and speed difference as well between the XF 16-55 and 18-135. That said, I see what you mean. 16-70 doesn't *seem* that much different than 16-55 though for many users the extra reach that 70 or 75mm would afford is a big deal. I know it would be for me.

I’ve had a play with one today. Some nice features but I would keep my canon pro gear rather than buy this. It is being sold as a pro system and the size is prohibitive. The whole idea of the mirror less systems in my view is to make the kit less bulky which is why I bought into the system. I hope just hope they bring IS to a revised X-T3 in the autumn and don’t get stuffy about proam differentiation which I was told today
Wow that IBIS is LOUD. The “stabilized” video footage was not very impressive, but then, we didn’t see the same clip without IBIS to compare. I was hoping for an “X-T2s”, so I’ll likely wait for the X-T3 or the upcoming offerings from Canon. Looking forward to your full review, thanks!
The IBIS is much quieter than the Olympus IBIS. I just had the volume turned right up at that point on my recorder.
Gordon Laing thanks for the reply. So can you not hear it by ear normally? More importantly, did the noise get picked up in a video in a quiet setting!?
I'd say it was pretty quiet, quieter than the Olympus. I'll do more tests when i have the camera again and discuss it in my bigger review at cameralabs.com
Btw there is a mistake in info regarding subdisplay of this camera. Its not LCD rather its an e-ink display.

Oooh I'm gonna get super nerdy for a sec :D Actually it is LCD, not E-Ink. It's a type of not-often-seen these days called Transflective LCD. This was the same type of screen used on the old GameBoy Color. Transflective screens look slightly metallic when displaying white, densely dark when showing black, can be seen from any angle without contrast loss, and don't cast shadows unlike traditional LCD elements. They're very easy to see in most lighting conditions since they reflect more available light, and while they can be backlit, the pixel grid becomes super visible so picture quality degrades while it's on (such as on the X-H1.) If you take the battery out of the X-H1, the display fades away. E-Ink would remain even without a power source.
I wish more camera makers would use this type of screen for their sub-displays, waaaaay better than the old-school segmented digits.

Hello Gordon. I am extremely curious to know the usability of this camera without the battery grip as I cannot use one with one. Is it like the previous generation Sony a7 cameras where we have to carry 6 batteries around or is it closer to the current generation Sony a7rII, a9? Thanks!

I wonder if it works well to shoot film with any of Fuji primes, such as the Fujinon XF 56 / 1.2 R or Fujinon XF 35 / 1.4? No problems with Jitter etc? Is there any difference compared to filming with a zoom?Thanks for a good review/ Video!
I own the X-H1 and shoot with the following lenses :23,35,50,18-55 and the 50-200 and has very seldom heard any noise from the lens stabilizer..
Sorry, I must have missed it. Without an exposure compensation dial how quick is it to add a third stop or two exposure.
It's very easy - just hold the EV button down like a shift key as you turn the dial.
It doesn't feel clumsy. It's also how most other cameras operate.
The exposure button can be programmed to act as an on off button that allows you to turn the dial with out holding the button down. If that makes sense
it does make sense, I'll try that next time, I always held it down.
so phase out XT line? OR just no IBIS on XT3. and merge both eventually when technology emerges?

Fuji lover here. Basically you now have a dslr like body. might as well go for the a sony or nikon for the better sensors.
I agree it's now DSLR-sized, but I don't agree about the sensors. I think Fuji has one of the best sensors around and I also prefer shooting mirrorless with electronic composition to a DSLR.
Hai Gordon Laing, thank you! Could you maybe give examples for fixed lenses, how they benefit from the IBIS system? I got no zoom lenses anymore.

The body is water-resistant. So are lenses marked WR. What about other lenses of Fuji, because the number of those called WR is limited?
Yes, you need WR lenses if you want the whole thing to be weather sealed. Any remember it's only moisture resistant, you can't put it under water!
still, not competitive to Olympus/Panasonic set where all of them are WR:(
That 2.5 mm remote jack in firmware needs to output sound. It would be dope if it could like i've seen it done before on other cameras.

@01:11 Min: Another low budget way for turning the object infront of the camera maybe to get a wooden plate, put it on top of the table and just turn it arround by your hands while the camera is on tripod, much better control over the subject and no hands on the video

Hi Gordon. There it is finally. Fujifilm with OIS. To my untrained eye, it looked pretty good too.I agree, maybd a tiny bit snappy, but now that they've decided to add the OIS to one of their cameras, I think they will straighten that right out in no time. I didn't know that Fujifilm used a body with an APS-C sensor. Is this the first one? I liked a lot of the functions available with ghis model. It has what appears to be very close to the same ergonomics as my G9 and I really like the display on top of the body too. I don't remembef if you mentioned anything about it being weather resistant. Is it? Does Fujifilm produce any lenses that are weather resistant? I like it. Thanks as usual Gordon! JW
Hi JW, yes, all the Fuji X bodies are APSC, and they have a few weather sealed lenses too, the ones with WR in the name.
Hi Gordon. Will you tell me the advantages of APS-C over micro 4/3 other than it just being a larger sensor? Does APS-C have an extreme image quality advsntage above the micro 4/3? I'm thinking that I may need to change brand preference just to gain the larger sensor, depending on it's advantages. Is this model capable of some of the great 4K features such as pre-burst, 4K post focus and 4k focus stacking?

Hi JW, bigger sensors should be cleaner in lower light and retain more detail in shadows and highlights, but in the normal ISO range I think you're using, i don't think you'd notice much difference. Meanwhile the Fuji system doesn't offer the 4k photo modes of the Panasonics, so you lose out there. Also, the bigger the sensor, the bigger, heavier and more expensive the lenses.
Hi Gordon. Thanks for the reply, as usual. I still really like the thought of the bigger sensor though, the more information that I pick up on. I just never considered to look at Fujifilm untill I saw you and Doug talking about them. And I think it may have been Doug who pointed out the great the top function array on the Fujifilm camera bodies. No matter who pointed it out, I agree. The large locking dials, and especially the benefit (in my opinion) of the ISO control knob being there. And I personally think that they are just astetically pleasing. And about the 4K you mentioned, I thought the X-H1 was now 4k capable, just for shorter periods of time. Am I wrong about that? And I apologize for hitting on a comparison to another brand while discussing your Fujifim review, but speaking of the Panasonic, do you think they will move into the APS-C sensor at some point. Or Just continue trying to stay competetive on the 4k, and now, the 6k side of the market? I would really like to see Fujifilm catch up on that side of things. I was at the camera shop today exchanging my Epson Surecolor P600 for the Epson Surecolor P800 because of it's wider printing abilities, and picking up a roll of paper, and the gentleman who has been working with me down there also shoots Fujifim. He loves them. He says the picture quality is outstanding and the make very good glass in their lenses. I'm really interested in seeing where they'll go now that they have the OIS. It would be nice to see it added to the lenses as well. Unless the already had that too. Well, my printing studio is about to be ready to run. Now I just have to teach myself how to use it along with G9 images. There will be some I'll try to pull off of the LX-10 images as well. Again, thanks as usual Gordon! JW
Panasonic and Olympus can't go to APSC as they have a mount and lens system designed for a different sized sensor. As for Fuji, yes, it can film 4k, but just as plain video. It doesn't have the post focus or stacking features of the Panasonic 4k and 6k photo modes. PS - haven't you already committed to the G9 though, don't have buyer's remorse, it's a fine camera.
I just loved this review. Thank you kind Sir! Your presentation was awesome! I have the XT-2 I bought when I was in Japan, and the H1 has many improvements I think I'm gonna love. I have the grip battery booster but you mentioned some new nomenclature for the grip. It looks identical though, will my old battery grip work with the H1?
Thanks! Sadly the XT2 grip is not compatible with the XH1, so you'll need a new one.

Fuji are saying they have improved the AF speed - have you any comment on this?
I didn't notice a big difference yet, but so far I've only been shooting static subjects, mostly portraits and landscapes. i'll shoot action when I get the camera back for my final review.

I really like the image in video our of this camera. I must be crazy. I am the happy and proud owner of a Canon 5div and a Lumix G9. Except for a A7r3 or A9, there is nothing on the market that should make me salivate. And still, I am tempted by the look of this video from this guy, the XH1. Gordon, what do you think about the video of G9 vs this one?
I think the video features, the stabilisation and the burst speed are all better on the G9, plus it has a fully articulated screen and a more refined wifi / bluetooth app. But the Fuji has the bigger sensor and some people just love their style.
So, what’s the solution for shooting video more than 30 minuets or even 60’!?
This camera isn't the solution if you want more than 30 minutes uninterrupted! If you want clips longer than 30 minutes, you should go for something like the Lumix GH5 instead.

Have mine on preorder. Really looking forward to getting IBIS for my 56mm 1.2 and 23/35mm f2s. Besides IBIS the feature I most am excited about is isolated settings for photo/video. This was a pain on the xt2 and I look forward to being able to switch without having to switch all my settings around.
I actually filmed the harp player with the 56mm f1.2, and it was great having the stabilisation.
For some reason 200mbps is grayed out on my X-H1 and I am at 2.01 firmware.....very frustrating!
there are wrong settings in the camera for some reason, no problem with 2.01 here (of course 200mbps only with 4K resolution). It's not related to firmware, even without the battery grip I can select it. Try to put every settings for the movie menu like factory ones or at least a camera reset is the last solution.
@@nerdMike I think I figured out what the problem is, I am using 95mbps sd cards. That may be the reason that 200mbps option is grayed out
@@jamesmolleur2196 I can tell you it's not the card. I tried very old sd class 2/4 just now and I can select 200mbps when available. At least it blocks the recording if the card can't keep up, but you can select the high bitrate. There is something else to check, because you may encounter this problem when I a hurry and it's not easy then to figure out.

Is the IBIS performance for video at 11:38 for real? I need it to be better than this. Is it a broken unit maybe or can they fix it with firmware?
I can only report what I've experienced. As I said in the video, it was an early unit, so hopefully they'll improve it.
The thing is, IBIS efficiency decreases significantly with the increase in sensor size (weight, amount of the angular movement, cooling efficiency are the main reasons). This is why Sony's IBIS isn't nearly as good as ones in MFT systems, and that's why Fuji's IBIS will not be as efficient as the one in Olympus and Panasonic cameras either.
I'd say the performance is more or less what one should expect. What they could improve is smoothing that motion that exceeds the capabilities of IBIS, so it doesn't "jerk" but ease in and out more. Otherwise, the performance is very reasonable, especially for the first try in this kind of technology for Fuji.
If you’re seriously serious about video, you shouldn’t be looking at Fujifilm’s first foray into the medium. That’s a given. You should go with Panasonic if you need better than this at the present time.
I've tested my X-H1 with the 16-55 2.8, while walking and it certainly looks a lot smoother than it does here. It can still have a little bit of snap as seen with most IBIS systems, but it was nowhere near what it was like in this review. I suspect Gordon was using a prototype/beta firmware.

I hate the way that LCD articulates. The fully articulating ones, like Canon or Panasonic, twist around a single point making it quick and intuitive. This one is not only unnecessarily limited in its movement for no good reason (no way is it quicker, sorry), but the limited grip that it affords and the shifting plane of twist make it unintuitive to operate quickly to get exactly the results one wants. I don't get why Fuji is insisting on using this arcane and pointless overcomplication when simple and proven design is available.
Same goes for Sony.. although there is an argument to be made for tilting LCD's when doing waist level shooting. It's a lot more discrete and doesn't get noticed as much as flipping out an LCD to the side and turning it. I do prefer a fully articulating screen though. They just have more pros than cons compared to a tilting screen.
If the screen only tilts vertically, then you can get it to a waist or over-head height in one motion rather than two with a flip-out screen - so it is faster, and more discreet too if you're street shooting. But I still prefer the flexibility of a side-hinged screen, but I think you need to pay a license to use it.
Sony's A-mount design is the best, no question about it. It's hinged at the bottom, and it gives one *all* of the benefits of both types of screen - a quick tilt for discreet shooting, selfie view, the possibility to protect the LCD by facing inwards, and full articulation.
It's a ridiculously good design, which for some reason Sony have deemed too good to put on E-mount cameras >:(
Is that the one where the selfie view is below the camera? That's no good when you're on a tripod or using a stick...

No, the LCD rests on a two-section arm which folds out exactly parallel to the lens' axis. The second section also has a rotating hinge holding the LCD, which means that the screen pivots to show a vertical view. It's really hard to explain 😅
But it can be used for selfies above *and* below the camera, which is awesome.

Thanks for your concern. I've always been shaky, which isn't great for these demos, especially when you're looking closely. I'm also often under pressure when filming them, so that doesn't help either!

Hi Gordon why are you obsessed with ibis it saps battery and never locks still. if you shoot with small primes you don't need ibis and most fuji zooms have great ois. To me the whole point of fuji mirrorless was the size and form. The xh1 with the 16 55 is as big as DSLR and to get decent battery life you have to add the grip which makes it even bigger! This is another camera with everything thrown at it and it's lost the fujifilm charm. Ibis is great for video but not necessary for stills especially when iso performance is so good. Most of the greatest images where taken with cameras with no ibis or iOS.
Just think how many other great images we would have if IBIS was around 50 years ago... In camera IBIS means that camera makers can now make smaller, lighter, sharper and cheaper lenses for your people who don't like big camera gear. You should be happy.
Hi are you suggesting current lenses aren't sharp enough! and that we need to buy a new set of gear to improve our photography! As l said ibis is great for video and if you want it that's fine but you don't need it. Even the new m4/3 bodies are as big as small DSLR. My point is it's not the magic wand that's going to fix everything it does have down sides that never get mentioned. As for the missed images do you really think that's a valid point to me it belittles the work of past photography to even suggest they could have done better with ibis it's a insult to them. Every new innovation has it's advantages and if you want it buy it and enjoy it but don't suggest you have to have it. I've owned cameras with and without ibis in fact I still do and enjoy using them all but I've never been disappointed with the results from either.
Go back to using film like the "greats" then...
You seriously don't think that great photographers didnt have 100's of photos that got binned because they was blurry? All the great street photographers /war photographers? They would have killed for IBIS

Try not to get upset if someone doesn't agree with you😘 many great street, landscape,sports and wildlife photographer's still shoot without ibis. Don't you ever delete images I expect yours are all perfect

I'm sorry Gordon I love your content and am subbed but dude...this isn't a review. It's an impressions video -- and barely even that. Was only actually maybe 3-4 mins of actual observations.
I get titling it so for views but for goodness sakes a review is talking about how something works and the practical effects of how a camera works. NOT a video spec sheet. We all already know the specs. Tell us HOW this thing works for real practically. How is the new shutter button, how much better is the autofocus, is the eye autofocus better? How about battery life now that they're still using the same battery despite putting in more tech?

It's a first looks video, but I have handled and used the camera for a lot longer than my other first looks videos. As always though this is just the first stage in my review process, and I'll follow with my full report over time.both here and at cameralabs. My thumbnail stated this video was a first looks, but I've added it to the title too.

no, he's right. The camera is only out for a few days? So what? Than such a video is on youtube for months or years you are trying to find some real world review or footage from a camera but what you find is a "first look" videos on every corner. That was always annoying to me. But good that the author changed the name!
I think we also all have to remember that these videos are posted free of charge for you to watch - you may be disappointed to learn most of us youtubers are only earning about $1 per 1000 views, so I'm lucky if one of my videos earns me 50 bucks!
Do not pay too much attention to the nontalents - they're busy ,dreaming up filmmaker personas , and scourer the tube for videos to "Comment" on,-
