Man, I cannot believe that! I am a huge fan! Just remember being a young kid in the south of Brazil back in the 2000's. No internet, no BMX videos until the day a kid who had family in the US started to bring some BMX DVD's to us in the country side. What a happiness, for years every weekend the BMX kids gathered together at my home, we watched a BMX DVD and went to ride. Such a good time, just bmx and friends, no stress, no smartphones :) I do remember watching Mike so many times! This is the best wave BMX has ever had! Joe Rich, Taj, Ruben, Van Homan... This guys inspired a whole bunch of BMX'ers in my town. May not sound important, but that created a friendship between us that still remains and is solid as a rock. I had to stop riding due to back problems in 2011, but still have all my dvd's and still up to date on BMX. If there is a time I could go back to, would definitely be my 2000's decade!

I was up front leaning on the rail at that Dew Tour that Mike won. He even signed my UGP hoodie for me. As a Utah kid that was on his bike every moment possible that was one of the coolest moments of my life up to that point. To see the home town legend win it was amazing. I have never seen that much style thrown into one run before or since. Even 3 hours away over here in Vernal we all wanted to be like Mikey. We had the tight pants, slammed seats, going pegless and throwing as big of 180s as possible. If there is a BMX hall of Fame this man deserves to be its first inductee.
I caught a rare spinal cord disease at 15 and woke up completely paralyzed and on a ventilator.Spent the first 3 months with no way to communicate other than blinking.The first two times they took me off the ventilator all I did was beg them to let me die because of the pain.They would just knock me out and I would wake up on the vent again. I was told there was little to no chance of me walking again. I had to learn how to use my hands again ,how to crawl,stand, and then walk. Took me a little under two years. It's all about mindset, being determined, and not giving up.A good dose of stubbornness and enjoying proving people wrong definitely helped too. I had a great support system.My Dad, always being extremely direct and brutally honest, would tell me when I would bitch and complain that,"I know you need to vent,but the bitching and complaining ain't gonna get your ass out of that wheelchair any faster." To this day every time I scratch my nose I appreciate how awesome it is just to be able to do.Because once I experienced what it's like to have your face itching like a thousand spiders are running across it and I couldn't scratch it or tell anyone to scratch it for me, just had to lay there screaming in my head,it made me appreciate the smallest of actions on a ridiculously high level.Its a cliche saying but it's true.. it's the little things that make life so awesome, believe me those little things will be the first things you miss, and miss the most, the second you are unable to do them.So try to enjoy life and appreciate all the little things. I am 39 and got back into riding a couple years ago and it has helped me mentally and physically far more than any medicine or therapy I have done, and I have done ALOT! Also the BMX community is one of the best groups of people I have ever experienced or met.After winning a frame from Alfredo Mancuso a couple months ago I have had constant messages from people wishing me well, telling me to keep riding, and asking me how I am doing and how the build is going.All that from random strangers who don't even know me but they take time out of their day to see how I am doing and encouraging me to keep riding.They are proof of the fact that there are many many good people still out there.Just keep peddling and remember that even the smartest of people can still be completely wrong.Anything is possible with the right mindset and game plan. I grew up riding BMX and skating. I moved on to riding scooters and was lucky enough to have a long successful career, Mike was a huge inspiration to my riding. I wasn’t injured anywhere near as serious as Mike was, but a knee injury has made the last five years of my life pretty difficult. It has taken all of my confidence away. I’ve done the same as Mike and looked back at my old video parts and I find our perceptions of our old parts were the same until after our injuries. I now wish I could ride that way again. But I find myself worried of bailing even on easier combos and relying on my bad knee, possibly reinjuring it. It really does open your eyes and realize how good you had it. Long live Aitken!

I used to live a few hours from SLC and I'd ride there once in a while and I'd get to ride with all the Utah locals and, by far, Mike Aitken and Matt Beringer were the coolest to me even though I'm sure I was an annoying fanboy. I idolized Mike. He's a great person.
