I was obsessed with this game and specifically it's multiplayer while it was still active. The reason it died is that it's a niche title, and the learning curve was too high. I played in basically every tournament and actively miss dumping hours of my life into this game. Sadly, I highly doubt that we'll ever get something like this again. All that said, the 7-8 months where this game was still alive was just amazing.
That sounds awesome, I didn't realize their were tournaments and stuff as well that were ran for it. The "sequel" trilogy not making space dog fights a cool part of the those 3 movies hurts the future prospects for another game for sure. Thanks for watching and sharing Debaser, appreciate it!
I have to agree with you. The learning curve was way too high for many players. I tried to get my friends to join me in this game but they only stayed for one match. I stayed in the game for months, it was addictive. If only the skill ceiling was lower and more multi-player games modes introduced this game could have lasted longer
@@brandonjew1397 Weird question, but what was your username, or did you fly with CA or RNCR?
@Debaser1990 Sorry, I'm not familiar with the terms CA or RNCR, can you explain to me what those are?
@@brandonjew1397 Rancor Squadron and Cavern Angels squadron. They were groups of players dedicated to flying together.
VERY underrated. Network slow but not dead. Pilots needed badly. Excellent game, play it. Please 🙏
I love that so many people loved, and still love this game, thank you for watching!
The VR experience makes it one of my favourite games of all time! A childhood dream come true ❤️ it's just such a shame that the community has fallen through the floor.
I still might try find a way to play it in vr, I knew it would be awesome!!! Thanks for watching Mike!!
Yes indeed I loved this game in VR
I have just started to play it again 😏
Vr with a flight stick is amazing yall worth the dough when the game was alive
I got it at a 4 for $20 deal at gamestop and started playing it recently. It suck you cant use the psvr controllers.
They could've vastly increased the lifespan of the game by adding in modes for different eras, and even Legends content. Classic EU fighters like the Imperial Assault Gunboat, Star Viper, Skipray Blastboat, E-Wing, K-Wing, XJ, and StealthX would be a blast to fly. Hell, throwing in the Sun Crusher as a MW2-style match-ending killstreak would be funny as hell.
If there was stuff from the expanded universe PRE Disney I would probably die, that would be awesome. This game is like the one time I wish EA would have given me a reason to give them more money. It was a very one and done focused effort and then they moved on. Seeing there are alot of hungry players and fans out there that would have kept playing if they had kept it fresh. Thanks for watching, love your avatar and name, Kree!!
Not earning EA 60 trillion dollars is a deathnail
Disney doesn't like the expanded universe, mostly because they dont have full control over it. Legends was kind of a halfassed compromise that never really set well with the fan base. Main issue i had with squadrons was the control scheme was vary basic mostly focused towards consoles rather then sim players which left all the controls feeling vary janky.
@@nikushim6665 Fair, but it's possible to keep a mediocre game alive through good post launch support. You've just gotta commit to it.
@@jaffarebellion292 Well they did just put up on steam for like a buck fifty. That might temporarily drive the player base numbers up :P.
I actually appreciate you knowing the difference between underrated and underappreciated lol. People use those two interchangeably and it irks me, minorly.
I appreciate your appreciation! Lol thanks for watching Mythical :)
This game currently is on Steam Autumn sale for $1.99
just bought it
The VR experience was incredible, I just wish they included Clone Wars stuff. Would be an instant 10/10
This game deserved a long life with battlefront and Jedi all three could have been the flagship ea games with passion and love behind them
It'as not the only "pilot an xwing or tie fighter available", it's an almost complete remake of X-Wing vs Tie Fighter.
Death Star in Rogue Leader on the gamecube-perfection!
Agreed! Those games were so good. Thanks for having a watch Hari!!
Loved this game. I played when it came out on PlayStation with VR. Me and a couple friends all got the VR just so we could play this game. You could also play with people on other consoles. People would have their own squadrons with their friends. I’m only average at games, but you could really find you’re play style in the right vehicle. I concentrated on Y-Wings and U-Wings as New Republic. Tie Fighters and Tie Bombers for Empire.
You would jockey for advantage. As your side took advantage you would go on the offensive and go defensive when you lost that advantage.
As Covid started to normalize we all had to go back to real life. I went back to check on it and was sad to find I couldn’t find enough people to start a fight.
That's awesome! I'm glad you got to have a ton of fun with it when lots of people were playing. Thanks for sharing, I love hearing about others experiences with the games I'm going through.
I just downloaded (before watching the video) and I love it. It low key goes hard and it is indeed VERY underrated
Absolutely amazing game. I played a lot of the when the game launched and loved being involved in the Esport League scene while it lasted, Was a lot of fun playing Multiplayer vs high skilled pilots and building strategies there just wasnt enough to keep everyone playing. I is absolutley my favorite Star Wars flyer as I was able to play in VR.
This is such a through review. I have come across the visuals on net and wanted to see a review for it. This vid was just what I needed. Thank you for your work man!
Thanks for watching!
This game came out at the perfect time for me. Not really much of a gamer, I did love Rogue Squadron growing up. Between COVID making my career basically impossible and a couple of injuries, I had basically a year to just play SWS. And it was a blast while it lasted.
That's awesome to hear!!! I'm made I didn't jump on it when the multi-player was hoping, thanks for sharing and thanks for watching Joe!!
@@JimmyPotatoTV you missed out for sure. There was this sweet spot where the mechanics became widly known but werent completely perfected yet. And it was just a good time.
I actually just flew a few dogfights for the first time in basically a year. It was fun
I streamed this game for 2 years in Vr. So many good memories 😢
I just remember the first time I got 4 of my friends around with me, and we won our first fleet battle as a team. It was an unreal experience!
This game in VR with a flight Sim rig is very very very good.
But that barrier to entry is too high for most casual gamers
This game looks amazing. We’ve come a long way in Star Wars flight sims. I used to play this one for Windows PC when I was 6 (29 now) where you put a joystick over the keyboard. It was so awesome. Would love an even better set up nowadays for total immersion.
I still have a dream to somehow build an xwing cockpit IRL and run a game like this in it. Like you see those dudes do with trucking simulators and the hard core airplane Sims. That would be insane. Appreciate you watching and sharing Ty!!!
This is such a great game, I loved the multiplayer matches, I wish servers were still full, I would love to jump in and blast some people lol
I still play this game, but the lack of multiplayer matches is such a letdown. the only way to progress is by playing solo vs ai
This is what we want in VR, beautiful graphics
Just started to replay it through vr quest 2 airlink OMG! What a HUGE Difference from a flat screen! :)
Sounds awesome! Glad you are enjoying it, thanks for watching and sharing Mark!
I wish there were more players...sometimes I can;t even get into matches (Fleet battles) because there isn't enough players
Seems like a ghost town these days unfortuanitly:( thanks for watching !
@@JimmyPotatoTV Ofcourse! I enjoyed the video
I've actually bought a new PC to be exactly a Gamer Laptop to play SW Squadrons even Pre-Ordered It. I like Squadron but i feel that something was missing, like more story, i felt a little short the Story Mode, either way, i still like it, and even play it because i haven't removed SW Squadrons since August 2020 and today September 2023 still installed.
Squadrons was honestly amazing. It definitely couldve reached a wider audience but ofc had a much smaller team working on it
Great video, Jimmy. Thanks for the summary
Thanks for watching!
I personally think that this game is underrated when people talk about Modern Star Wars games , Star Wars squadrons was awesome and the single player story was decent, it could have been better but it was okay for what we got . This game being from the perspective of the pilot in the cockpit was a really smart choice and adds to the immersion . Great video by the way . 😊
Appreciate you watching Snowkid! Thanks for sharing your thoughts! As time goes on it seems to get more underrated, my initial comments and the thumbnail spoke more to launch, and how it was received by critics at that time. There is a lot of fun to have here.
@@JimmyPotatoTV personally I would keep everything the same except for a few things , number 1 have the player kill Lindon James , that would make his sacrifice more powerful . Number 2 the final battle should have jumped to the battle of jakku to where we ( the player ) get to decide which faction we want to fight on the last part of the story , if we choose empire , we along with titan squadron fight our hardest and then the empire surrenders but we flee into the unknown regions and create the first order . If we choose the rebels , we fight and and kill most of titan squadrons like sol and grey but titan three , vonreg and shen survive along with captain kerrial and are force to surrender . I’d would like if we could fight our customer character , depending on which faction we chose for the final battle .
@@Fire-kid20 I def like the idea of linking the final battle into the Battle of Jakku, that could have really worked.
Been playing it again still as fun as it was when it came out just had to check
What truly killed the game was the devs saying they would stop supporting the game less than a year after release.
Having this game.... Annnd the HOTAS flight stick..... PSVR...... Priceless.... I loved it...❤
Well, a few things have changed since release: Computer is faster, have a better joystick and throttle and have a 21:9 OLED Display. I tried it again yesterday and it's SO much better. :)
I would absolutely love to see this type of sim in a Battlefront type game(tho i kinda don't think we're going to get a Battlefront game any time soon sadly). I also love your hat lol
Thanks! I agree, I don't think a Battlefront game is coming any time soon either, which totally sucks. Because BF 2 could have been amazing. I hold out hope that times are changing soon, and companies prioritize quality over post release monetization. A game like battlefront, with all the possibilities, built in starwars fan base, it seems like such a no brainer, but they managed to mess it up twice lol. Thank you kindly for watching!
If you have a Quest 2 and you own a PC version of the game, you can play this game in VR. Just get a basic gaming joystick because the controls are not optimized for VR. Gotta get used to it but honestly, a must if you have a way.
This was excellent. Subscribed because of the personality and time put into the production.
Thank you for the kind words Wendell, the videos do take a little time to put together, it's nice to hear people are enjoying them. Def worth the effort, appreciate the Sub!
Great game, crazy learning curve for casual gaming.
I LOVE this game!!
Playing on PC with a HOTAS and flight stick is massively fun.
Only 411 games to go! XD honestly looks like a fun weekend game to play for a SW fan. Surprised to see customization.
Yah not super deep, but there was some stuff. 411 to go!! Won't take much time lol thanks for the support having a watch Slayer!!! Appreciate you,
Also there are still games running on Mondays Wednesdays Fridays and Saturdays. Of you can get in touch with some of the high ranking players like myself well good you up 💪
Love Squadrons. IT's the best. All I wanted was an OG Trilogy flight battle game. And I got it. If we had more mission types, some planetary missions.
I would kill for a Squadrons 2.
Been waiting for someone to take this view on this game,I still like it.a lot.
Thanks for watching!
It's fantastic in VR with the Quest 3, I wish I could play Starfield this way... :)
Word 👏🏾
More pilots needed! Its a good game for sure!
Thanks for the review bro
Thanks for watching it!!
We need a PS VR2 version
Good VR though. A gem in that gaming platform.
VR took this game to the next level. i couldn't believe how much of the soul of this game was ripped away switching off VR
thanks
This game in Virtual reality is easily one of the best experiences EVER. If they made a second one and simplified it’s mechanics slightly; it would surpass all VR games.
make it less “arena fighter 5v5” and more “space battle 12v12”
My only issue with the game was that the maps don’t really have a guide/method to orientate yourself… I occasionally find myself looking for where the battlefield is. Need a more detailed horizon, as well as buildings or structures, even more space debris.
I'm not a big VR guy, but it is THE game I want to try some point. Thanks for watching and sharing!
Should have been a series with the clone wars and old republic it absolutely deserved a series
This game really suffered from BF2's disaster launch, and didn't have the content for any longevity. I know there were some tournaments set up for it, but they seem to have fizzled out as well. I didn't get it because I was not happy with the few products being released through EA Star Wars and was/am actively try to avoid buying the games after EA's BF1 (not that many have been released after Disney's purchase of Star Wars).
All very fair, It's a damn shame the way it all went down for sure. Thanks for watching Dragorin!
Older gamer here. I really enjoyed X-Wing and Tie Fighter and looked forward to a 2020 update. I thought the graphics were great and gameplay was immersive. However, neither myself nor my friends were able to manage the challenge level of the game; "easy" mode was unforgiving. I'll fire it up from time to time (to remind myself how bad I am), but I'll never be able to convince my friends to try this again.
The old PC games were awesome! Thanks for watching Brian, much appreciated, did you ever play any of the wing commander games from back in the day?
@@JimmyPotatoTV I played and finished Privateer and Wing Commander IV -- solid games, in my opinion.
Yeah, I was an avid fan of X-Wing, Tie Fighter, and X=Wing Alliance back in the day. We had big joysticks and a full keyboard of commands to help us manage our ships, and it was great. Squadrons definitely pays homage to the old games, simplifying the gameplay in what I feel are very appropriate ways, and adding some cool new functionality. For example, I like the fact that putting all power to shields or engines won't automatically drain laser power. And the boost when you've got your engines to full is also a very nice touch.
But yeah, I agree: the challenge level is really high, even on the easiest difficulty.
My biggest complaint is the lack of re-playability with the very short campaign. Zero customizability for most missions is a bummer. And some of the coolest customizations are possible only in multiplayer, but we can't access them because nobody is playing.
@@grifonecoronato A coop mode for the story, with the ability to use whatever ship and maybe some more optional side objectives would have gone along way for replayability. The bones for a really great game are here, one that could last a long time, maybe needed a little more time, my guess is EA had a time frame, and the devs had to get in what they could, and wanted to make sure that was a polished multiplayer mode, which from everything I read after making this video, it was. I'm kicking myself for not jumping on this game at launch. Thank you for watching Alessandro, appreciate it!
Planet side combat would have added some life. Bombers could have hit ground targets. Also a bounty hunting 1v1 dog fight game mode where you hunt down harder and harder AI for both sides.
Excellent ideas, definitly would have added some more fun. Lots of potential left on the table. Thanks having a watch!!
gotta play the vr mode man its incredible
I just got the game today and I can't wait to download it
Have fun!!
Nice hat dude! And jersey!
Thanks! Go B's!
I was so nasty at this game. I miss it 😢
this is my fav vr experience and cant believe more starwars fans play it. underappreciated is super accurate
Thanks for watching!! Yah, I gotta get on the vr thing!!
My favorite game back in the day was Rogue Squadron on 64.
So playing this was amazing but the only thing I didn't like was your in space the whole time.
I wanted to fly thru Beggars Canyon again
Right there with you, what I would give for a remake of that Game, all 3 even! Thanks for watching!
It’s currently for 1.99$ on Xbox!!
we need to bring a cult following to this game. and help new people learn to play the game is AMAZING and needs to come back 85 daily players arent enough.
is any body able to open the game
it just keeps on closing after launching it
any help is appreciated guys
I love this game but i doubt there would a be a resurgence in players, but I hope they'll add something as in depth into Battlefront 2 or the next one, like in the original Battlefront 2 where there were confederate capital ships VS republic capital ships and there were transports to take each side to the other ship to attack it internally, and fighters to have dogfights outside of the ships.
That is my hope, we get a proper game combining ground air and space battle. Thanks for watching!
I got this game back when it came out, had been wanting a game like this for YEARS and I loved it, BUT the game was practically devoid of content. Not even in a "live service" kind of way since that always sucks. The game didn't have enough modes, very small selection of ships, few maps, few single player missions... It was just very barebones so people moved on rather quickly, sadly. Both the Rogue Squadron Trilogy and the X-Wing/Tie Fighter games that this game was trying to be a follow up to are way more complete packages by comparison.
What I want to see is a "Squadrons for People Who Grew Up With TIE Fighter" video.
That would be good. I have very fond memories of those games, always wondered how they held up over the years,
@@JimmyPotatoTV TIE Fighter was probably the best Star Wars game ever made for a good long while, all I want is more of that with multiplayer and a mission editor.
Multiplayer and a mission editor would be insanely great. @@Zwei4815
I hate how this game doesn't advertise that it supports the Hotas flight stick. I didn't even know it did until I tried it on a whim. You can use a flight stick with this game!
If you ever get VR, come back to this game, TRUST ME.
great video jimmy, however, I don't really think Battlefront's debacle is why the game didn't have much fanfare. Could have contributed I suppose, but I just think flight sim games are a very niche market. For example, for me personally, as a HUGE star wars fan, I don't give two flips about any sort of rogue squadron style game. I find flying around in ships boring af lmao. I want lightsabers, force powers, and even "laser" gun pew pews over flying around in ships staring at a pair of hands pushing buttons. But maybe I'm the minority there idk lol
That's a fair point for sure. Flight Sim I'm general is pretty niche, I just figure with the polish the game has, and not being a full price game, I just figured there would be some lasting power there, it's beautiful though, and pretty dang cool if you are into thr space battle stuff. Appreciate you watching Reed! Let me know how the adventures with Bode go later lol
@@JimmyPotatoTV EFF BODE!!! lmaooo
This game is still popular with it's regular players. There are still tournaments running. Check out discord
Thats awesome to hear!
Only playing because I got a psvr and I ordered the flight stick -
I've heard it's amazing in VR!!! I still plan to find a way to try that some day, have fun!! Thanks for watching!
Only if rogue squadron and this had a sequel released at the same time would be an awesome top gun style game and movie for Star Wars
imagine if the "rogue squadron" movie that was suppose to happen actually happened. That was suppose to come out THIS MONTH. They could have had a game release along side, and the world would have been a better place. Top Gun Style game and movie would be so good. Thanks for watching!
You can always get multiplayer sessions going on Star Wars games on Xbox live. I belong to an Xbox Live group that constantly puts up weekly play times for Dice's first Battlefront game plus the dlc so you're still able to get all the achievements as well if that is your thing. Personally I still love the first BF better than BF2. It's not tainted by the Disney trilogy so that's a big plus lmao. It does have dlc for Rogue One but the map and extra characters are actually good too. It also has a Death Star multi stage battle in the dlc that never found it's way to BF2 unfortunately.
That's actually awesome, good to know!
Think this game might have the most wasted potential of any Star Wars game ever released. Genuinely some fun times to be had playing, but I wasn't personally interested in the multiplayer modes, and the single player experience just felt incredibly unbalanced due to the lazy AI blatantly cheating and completely ignoring the actual ship stats.
I would love to see the engine repurposed for a decent OT single player VR campaign. The fact that they made such a great VR experience and then didn't give us any of the classic OT battles to fight just felt heartbreaking. I know they've been done many times over, but actually getting to try them in VR would have been amazing.
I just wanna fly a tie interceptor and tie advanced x1 and tie bomber and tie fighter
I just got it for 2 euros, love the game I don't mind that the online multi-player is dead I don't subscribe to Xbox live anymore anyway. now I'm just going to dive in the game and enjoy a few hours of starwars after work
Tough deal to beat! Enjoy!
Yeah this was the best thing to happen to sw since the old days, and nobody cared. I mostly play against AI and in VR. This game is my entire childhood just for the vr aspect.
39.99 online currently, Which sites usually have the sale?
Unsure on PC, but on Consoles it seems to go on a lot. Probably google and maybe find a key on sale though? Thanks for watching Jason!
Absolutely loved this game. It’s a shame the multiplayer didn’t get the dedicated numbers it deserved.
I think its on sale for like 2 USD right now, I paid 2.74 CAD.
Yah, that's a pretty great deal,
Right now on Steam for 1.99€.
I wish they would give us a Game like world of warship in Star wars universum withe the big ships 😅 i want to command a Venator ! 😅
Has awesome visuals, super cool idea, great basis to build a game off of and feels cool....BUT it shouldve had a more basic mode and simple 3 axis style flight style like Battlefront 2 from 2005....Sadly the limited ships, the 4 axis movement, shield/weapon/engine balancing that is confusing and not explained, and short basic story mode really made it a let down as someone who just finally played it after getting it for free through a sale for $5
Might be why it so cheap right now in playstation store for summer sale like 6bucks or less
6 bucks is worth it just for the story, even if no one is on the multiplayer anymore. If you dig starwars and flight games go for it!
@@JimmyPotatoTV Oh I didn't know not many play multiplayer anymore, but oof
I feel like it needed more ships. And more story
100 percent, thanks for watching!!
I just downloaded and started playing for the first time this month, and there is a game breaking bug where you loose all controls MID FLIGHT at RANDOM unless you spam click the fire button on the mouse, and even then, there's a big chance that won't get it to respond immediately. After some research, it looked like this was a problem since release. It's embarrassing that such a promising game suffers from such a breaking bug. Playing in VR mode with keyboard and mouse.
dang, didn't play VR so didn't realize there was such a bad bug, total bummer,
@@JimmyPotatoTV The best thing EA could do at this point is release the source files so the general public can fix their mistakes and be done with the trouble.
I believe the problem with player base is simply enough ppl don't play flight sim. I tried Microsoft sim 2000 was enough to scare me away from sims for 20 years. I found it had very little to no instructions.
I think that could be a part of it. For me they put in enough options that the game is accessable to a wide range of skill levels. The issue is that they probably didn't market it as such, people hear flight sim and look the other way at times for sure. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts!
This game in VR is off the hook!
I might have to find a way to check that off in 2024, thank you for watching!
@@JimmyPotatoTV it’s so much $$$ to get the immersion. I’m doing the Seagate express with a ps5 controller right now but being able to turn your head around with your neck and look at your r2 unit in the x wing is too cool!
Playing this in vr would be epic but I'd 100% throw up...
All part of the virtual experience!!! Lol you are probably right though, thank u for watching!!
@JimmyPotatoTV no worries man, was playing starlight assault on bf2 for first time in years and remembered thus exists haha.. gonna have to get it now, thank you mate
Is this game based on the Dark Horse Star Wars comics X Wing Squadron and Rogue Squadron comics?
Not the old rogue squadron story's no, I think it's an original story for the game,
Fortunately you do still progress when playing single player PvE so it’s still possible to play the game like any other game
mano meu jogo crasha assim que passo da cutscene para pilotar a nave ja no inicio do jogo, sabe como arrumar?
Sorry, I don't know how to fix that? I played on xbox and didn't have any issues with crashing.
This game actually "feels" like you are flying the ships on kbm. Pressing certain keys makes you feel like you're flipping switches and timing deterrents and the kills are satisfying. The lobbies have been dead for years
No new star wars games since this and bf2. I hope out laws is good. It is criminal that this game did not get enough love or a sequel.
Me gusta mucho el juego. Pero creo que el tamaño de los destructores es demasiado pequeño. Siempre me lo ha parecido. Deberían ser más grandes ¿ no es cierto? Qué opinan?
It's always tough to get the size right in games I think, because if they went actual scale, vs a tie, or an xwing, they would be massive, it would take time to even fly by them. I think they try balance something that looks cool, with something that functions within the game in a fun way. I'm glad you like the game as well, thank you for watching!
Still one of my favorite games to play in VR
This game just missed a golden opportunity with a 4 player coop-that would have made it incredible
I was hoping for a more sandbox style career mode. Let me fight AI enemies in dedicated careers for either Empire or Rebels. This constant switching back and forth between characters is something I dislike (I even disliked when CoD started doing that back in the day, forcing you to play different narratives in a random order).
I want to immerse myself and pretend I am an X-wing (or TIE) pilot and have a connection to my ship and droid. This pre-packaged campaign with a series of missions that have to be cleared in the same way every time is not all that interesting for me.
I would really love some kind of dynamic career like they made for the IL-2 games, but with the ability to actually affect the outcome of the war. If you do some awesome heroics, you should be able to "win" for the Empire (just like I think all Jedi games should allow you to fall to the dark side).
Also, I don't like multiplayer because for multiplayer to be fair, then everything must be "balanced"... aka: you die all the time. I don't want to have a 50:50 k/d ratio, because that means you have to respawn once per kill... I want to be Anakin Skywalker or Dameron Poe, mowing down enemies and feeling like one of the heroes of the movies.
Also, real players tend to cheat or gimmick their way to victory which usually looks very unimmersive and stupid. In fact, I don't play any multiplayer games anymore at all anymore.
I still play it just for the excitement of flying these ships in v.r. These games get dropped so quickly, but who cares...it's Star Wars!!
If I get a VR option in the future it's the first game I'll be looking to play! Thanks for watching!
It is cool, you'll enjoy it!!@@JimmyPotatoTV
Infinity: Battlescape
wow, just looked it up, that looks pretty insane! Going to look a little deeper, thanks for the suggestion and checking out the video!
