Confused by compression? You’re not alone.
Apart from EQ, compression is your most powerful tool to deliver pro sounding mixes, both live and in studio. Unfortunately, the amount of parameters you have in front of you is often overwhelming.
Today I’m here to help you clarify compression with a 4-step workflow I learned from a killer mixing book, Mixing With Your Mind. We’ll cover:
- In what exact order you should adjust your compressor settings
- The two main adjectives I use to describe compression
- Why drums is the best place to start to learn compression

That's my FAVORITE book on getting the FEELING of mixing tools. Great video!
Isn't it great? Thanks a ton, James.
The Mixing Engineer’s Handbook by Bobby Owsinski?
This was awesome, I love the system side of things too but this was a good change and from a live sound perspective. 👍🏻👍🏻 can’t wait for more
Great help, thanks
Great video Mike! Thoughts if you ever decide to do a part two:
1 Since the plug in you used has the auto-makeup gain function we sort of skipped a step that most people would have to think about, which is how to manage the gain reduction. P2 could touch on this, whether to use make up gain, gaining the signal hot to begin with, or mixing the channel louder. Pros and cons of each.
2 Compressing drums is a bit of a special case since it has those super strong initial transients. I find that I have to think a bit differently when compressing a vocal, string or other sound without super clear transient.
Overall great video, thanks for talking clearly about sound!
It's all about the Relatio! 😉 awesome vid. Great explanation with examples.
Thank you very much!
Thanks
Nice job, Michael. Very informative!
Thanks, Eric! I'm not sure if you remember this, but when I was helping heading up the sound system for the pit I remember you showing me the yellow "one knob" compressor on the analog board we were using to mix down the pit for the field.
@@MichaelCurtisAudio I’m sure I had just found out what it did myself!
1:08 Sounds cool!
Thanks!
how should the PEQ compressor be on speakers? in preventing it from blowing and still maintaining good sound.
Cue guitars and helicopters
Don't bring me down.

Electric Light Orchestra. That's what the drum loop sounds like when it's squished.@@MichaelCurtisAudio
Modern sound is overcompressed…
