The piece is originally written for the Harpsichord,
but here in an arrangement for solo guitar made by Christophe Dejour.

Bach probably composed it during his time in Köthen from 1717 to 1723. The piece was already regarded as a unique masterpiece during his lifetime. It is now often played on piano.
It´s not the first time the work has been transcribed for the guitar but this is my modest attempt. The work has a.o. also been transcribed for viola solo by Zoltán Kodály in 1950 and Busoni made two transcriptions for both solo piano and cello and piano, which are catalogued as BV B 31 and 38, respectively.
I play on my brand new Behnam Shirazi guitar (2014) on this video.

Yes this is a monumental task to attempt on guitar. Brilliant.
There is a special place in my heart for this fascinating piece. I recorded an abbreviated version of this with my dear friend Jaco Pastorius on his masterpiece Word Of Mouth record in 1981, on which it served as a segue. It’s a handful on the electric bass but he played it out of a serious love for the piece. It has lived inside my head ever since.

@@dibaldgyfm9933 Word Of Mouth includes all that was intended, severely marred by several edits which became super apparent after mastering. That’s on me and I would love to repair those but I doubt Warner is interested, sadly. It would take me all of an hour and I would do the work gratis just for the love.
I recall the night before sitting on the living room floor of Peter Erskine’s house while he was out of town. We went over all the toughest transitions and fingering alternatives with no amp, rehearsing for hours late into the night. He knew it would be a major challenge. We shared a love for the piece and Bach in general and it really meant a lot to him, being the only ‘flash’ bass on the whole record.
The next record was to include a long form symphonic piece. Jaco’s interests had already broadened beyond mainstream jazz and I was very eager to move in that direction. We did several exploratory sessions before disastrous health issues intervened, resulting in the criminal theft of all our 24 track tapes from a studio in NYC.
wow. I had *no idea* you could transcribe the Chromatic Fantasy & Fugue for guitar. What an absolutely masterful performance. Especially the fugue.
This is the best performance I have ever heard, but I also love Philip Hii's performance; you should check it out.

@@WindsorPro Philip Hii's performance is impressive for its velocity, but I prefer the melodic character of Dejour's. It's as good as it gets.
As a pretty good guitarist of over 30 years who has dabbled a little in Bach, I gotta say its almost too much for the brain to take in,.his techniques and tonality are incredible.

Wonderful performance! Bravo! - for the arrangement and for the playing on a guitar a piece which is so hard to perform even on an harpsichord or a piano! More over: your musicality and interpretation is superb. You have found the delicate sound, the natural flow and right velocity of this piece. Fluid and so warm. Listened twice. First time I recall listening to this Bach composition. Truly remarkable piece, transcription and performance.
A masterful command of technique and a clean sound in the context of some quite musical and expressive playing. Reminiscent of the Chaconne, these are very effective arrangements/transcriptions for the guitar, as everything seems to lie quite naturally on the fingerboard (although appearances can be deceiving), giving the impression that these works were written for the guitar. Bravo! (on both the transcriptions and on the performance).
This is a precious masterpiece and absolutely touching in the way Christophe Dejour performs it. Heartwarming, soul food, wonderful. I listened almost breathless to the beauty of the performance...merci beaucoup, cher Monsieur Dejour, quelle etonnante maitrise de la guitare classique!

Beautifully well done. Totally musical in all respects. This composition fits the instrument very well, but it's obvious that it takes many hours, weeks, and years of practice to prefect it. I can't complement you enough.

Not to be believed, this thing BWV 903 has been with me forever, never liked it on the Cembalo, and, here on the guitar and just love it, but, in retrospect, the Cembalo is the one to listen too,
