- Best Non-NATO Ammo To Stockpile
When stockpiling ammunition for SHTF prepping, I usually suggest NATO cartridges for logistical reasons. But what if you want a diverse supply?
When it comes to non-NATO ammunition types, there are some that still offer quite a bit in availability, affordability and abundance. In fact, a lot of manufacturers product budget friendly steel cased ammo for a variety of calibers. That's one of the metrics used in this video to help decide what might be worth stashing. If a cartridge is popular enough in the USA to be manufactured overseas in steel cases, then it likely has logistics working in it's favor.

Another readily available cartridge during C-1 niner was the Win. 270. Good ballistics, and you can take elk with it.
Tons of 350 legend at my Walmart still also.
.270 was definitely on the list as a possibility! I just went in favor of the .243 Winchester but you're right.
I couldn't find it in my area for the life of me and that was saddening because I want to get one. 270 is basically a higher BC 30-06 to a point. You can get almost the same bullet weights cruising as fast or more with better wind deflection... I'm for it!
@@hooktriggertrail That is exactly what it is. It was made by necking down a 30-06.
I have been saying that ever since 2013. 270 was everywhere when I could hardly find 30-06. I remember driving 50 miles away because a Walmart had two boxes of 30-06, yet every Walmart had lots of 270.
It is still the case now. I have actually been trying to stock up on some other calibers like 243. It's a little tough to find but 270 is still everywhere.
BTW I am seeing tons of 350 Legend. I should probably turn my 458 Socom into a 350 Legend. 458 is too expensive even reloading.
In addition to what you mentioned; 22lr. Great for saving the bigger rounds for the big jobs. Also, great for training and pest management.
When .22 LR was scarce, I was able to find a bunch of .22 mag so I bought a revolver with both cylinders. .22 shorts were available also and I used them a lot on the trap line.
@@CandC_Farms good idea! I like the ideas of revolvers because of the ability to use different calibers in some of them
22lr should be the #1 in a stock pile. No offense to all other calibers, but I can and may have enough 22lr to shoot a few hundred a day in practice for a few months. Ultimately. What people should "stock pile" should be ammo for all firearms you own and want to keep. Why would you stock pile 44 s&w if you don't own one. I'd rather have double or tripple 9mm vs having an ammo for a weapon I don't own.
30.30 and 7.62x54R are two I have stock piled.
My obscure ammo is 7.62x45. Impossible to get now. But at time I got my CZ52 (SHE 52) rifle it was $45 a 1000 rounds. I got that back when a new SKS was $89 an AK47 was $200, and FALs were $395. Also a new 7.62x54R Dragonev was $495.
THE GOOD OLE DAYS.
That must have been nice haha
Sooooo jealous. It's not even funny 😐
Think there are some 7.62 x 54r bolt action rifles. Have a SHTF stash of it, and a Mosin. Isn’t a bad thing to have, but s modern bolt action might have great utility than a Mosin. Be good for hunting and is a long range round. Long enough range at least for most shooters. Who really shoots anything past 500 yards anyway.
I like the open sights on a Mosin, but (now at 52) need a scope to shoot past 100 yards. A modern bolt action with a scope and my 54r stash would be a good day.
I remember those days! We shot 7.62x39 Norinco ammo like it was .22 lr… looking back… Why didn’t I buy a case of Druganov’s just to keep… Hindsight is 20/20
6.5grendel was 230$ a 1000rds of wolf or barnaul. That's when I bulked down. It's still kinda cheap 13$a box. But I now reload.
I like .45acp,30-06, and when I feel sleazy, I go with the .41 magnum.
I like sleezy sometimes. That's when I bust out the 45 Schofield.
Very good subject! I have condensed my stock pile to Nato ammo due to price concerns. One thing I have done over the years is stock pile 357/38 for revolvers. I have stock piled the last 2 cartridges for 20 yrs and they functioned fine when stored correctly. Keep up the great conversations because I learn something with every video you produce.
3030 lever one of the best out there lots of rounds out there. Great job on video 📸
Good point on 30-30! Generally found in lever guns so that's why I threw the final shout out to the .30 Carbine.
.30-30 hasn’t been readily available on the shelf for over 3 years.😢. The price has been pushed to $1.50-2.00 a round. The ammo makers are now pushing the .350 Legend to sell rifles. It has been more available and cheaper the last few years.
My first shot in a shtf scenario would be with my 60cal flintlock, followed up with my Garand, then my ar’s and ak. 😊
The good thing about 40 S&W is that if you have a Glock, you can easily convert to 9mm with a simple barrel and mag change. 10mm guns can also be converted to 40 with just a barrel change or can run 40 without the barrel change in a pinch.
Any shooter has to have a 22lr never go to the range without one. Saves me so much money! So I can keep stocking up on my ammo
And a couple .22lr to the noggin of 2 legged assailants just may drop em in their tracks given good shot placement.
100%
Also the .22lr is the perfect companion rifle/pistol caliber. Maybe not for battle - but it’s great for any situation
I 100% agree with having plenty of heavy hitting cartridges for large game. However, there are many states that do not allow semiautomatic battle rifle platforms to be used for hunting.
That said, there still may be some requirements to adhere to regulations at the beginning of an SHTF situation. Therefore, have a good manual operated hunting rifle in 30.06 or other caliber could put meat on the table in a less conspicuous way if seen in the woods with a battle rifle.
I agree and will be adding a bolt .308 to the collection this year.
@@nicks2581 check out the Ruger American Ranch Rifles. 5.56 and .300 BLK use common AR mags and are threaded to stay quiet.
@@ArmySapper Guess you didn't hear the affordability and availability part of the video.
Isn't funny your worried about allowed...m
some states have now gone to rifles during the deer season, that uses STRAIGHT WALLED cartridges. the 350 legend is a straight wall high powered hunting round
The thing that I love about 30-06 is that you load such a variety of bullets. You can use it for everything from varmints to brown bear.
This is true, you just have to make sure you’re using the proper twist rate. My 30-06 doesn’t really like anything above 165 grain
Tis why I like 30 cal. lot's of choices in bullet weight . 300 black, 308 and 06 are all versatile.
@@randy4134 165 works on about anything but the brown bears in 30-06 its all in the shot placement
Stockpile the shit out of 22
Really good video. I have nearly all the calibers you discussed for the very purpose of future availability.
Yaaaaah!!! I feel all warm and fuzzy since #1 40S&W is my personal favorite to reload.. And #2 45ACP is also a favorite..
I agree 40s&w was almost always on the shelf at my local cabelas. 6.5 Grendel is good but I prefer the 6.8spc. But that's just me. Also have 7.62x39 AR that functions flawlessly so far. I pretty much agree with you. Good overview.
It was available for much longer than the usual suspects. I like the 6mm ARC as well but I had to give the 6.5 Grendel credit for being more abundant.
Marketing goes along ways to making a successful cartridge. Remington screwed up the 6.8spc and it took the reloaders to fix it. Also it was designed to work within the same parameters as the 5.56. Grendel is definitely a better long range round, but only if shot out of a longer barrel. I liked this video really well thought out in my eyes. Keep up the good work!!
6.5grendel all the way. 1-1000yds. Cheap steel cased ammo. Easy to reload. Cheap to reload. 6.5grendel is my main cartridge. I don't even own a 556 anymore.
Underrated cartridge is the 7.62 x 54 rimmed. You can buy it pretty cheap still, either in spam cans or soft points and that’ll help you as a designated marksman rifle and for hunting.
I would also suggest is 30-30. Extremely common hunting round that a ton of people still use.
Good info, thanks MagicMan!
Anytime!
Although not a fighting rifle caliber the 30-30 Winchester ammo can be found in every backwoods hardware store everywhere in the USA with the Marlin and Winchester lever-action carbines found in just about every farmhouse in the USA and maybe Canada too.
Personally, I carry a .45 acp, so I always have a minimum of 1k rounds of hollows and a smaller amount of fmj, 9mm, 223, 5.56, and 308, which is where I stand on stockpile. I might have some other calibers, but nothing like the others I stockpile. However, that's just me.
Nothing wrong with that approach if you ask me.
7.62x63mm /30.06 is a excellent round that won WW2 and still great for Elk Dear Black Bear wolf and 2 leg Predators 8mm mauser is a devastating round that can defeat level 1v armor
One thing I bet you could find in any farm house or any small town house here in Oklahoma at least is 30-30. I've also noticed 350 legend is becoming much more available around here.
When 224 Valkyrie first came out I had to get one and when ammo was hard to find and expensive the 224 was cheap and on the shelf so I stocked up! I got it for $5 a box at Wally World!! Bought all they had, lol
Im a big fan of 7.62 x 39. Ive had a lot of luck w Hornady ballistic tip for hunting w a KS47 and you can get a bolt action. I prefer 308 but hey...
I was happy that nobody else wanted my 40s&w. Now the secret is out. Guess I'm going to grab some more tomorrow.
Great video.
In my area, the .40 still disappeared it just took a little longer.
The .17 Rem. is my SHTF tool.
During the ammo shortage here in the Houston area it was the opposite down here. 40. Was gone and only got a shipment once, maybe if you were lucky 2 a month. Meanwhile 9mm was in shipments 3 days a week.
Good points
A good ar in 762x39 is the ks-47 pay palmetto state Armory I have one and have shot it a lot and it runs great but I would suggest gettin a couple of the parts like the extractor because it’s not the easiest thing to find at times
22 lr and 7.62x39 cuz it’s been relatively cheap and it fits the diversified ammo portfolio 😁
ruger blackhock 357mag revolver also has an optional 9mm cylindar so you can shoot 357, 38spec and 9mm out of it.
I have a marlin sbl 45-70. That's my shtf rifle!
Dude I love that thing. I totally let entertainment influence my gun affection from time to time. Jurassic World made me want that gun bad.
Yea it's a very nice, well made gun! Ruger did an awesome job. Just wish the ammo wasn't so expensive.
I agree with the list and nearly predicted it. I would add the 12 ga. varieties of ammo though. The variety and availability and the amount of firearms, in a wide price spectrum, that are available most anywhere make it an easy one to stock up on. It seems boring and less glamorous, but has been proven to be very practical. Have you shot some water jugs with slugs lately? I can't believe the devastation! Very fun! Thanks for the video and the inspiration to think further.
Sweet Revolver Man! 👊
Thank you
7mm Rem Mag is my go to for a bolt action.
I agree with your list
i have a nice supply for 45long colt. since i have both a 45lc SAA and a 45lc lever action.
There were over 6 million M1 carbines made. So, I imagine in an EOTW situation many of the “collector” pieces would come back into service.
I feel like hollywood has most of them haha
I tried to stay well rounded, 22lr, 38 special revolver, 9mm, 5.56, 30 carbine and last 30/06 bolt gun.
Stockpiling 38/357,44 spl/mag 45lc for my revolvers
beware of using full power 30.06 ammo in CMP M-1's. there's a lower pressured load requirement with them. upgrading the gas system will allow you to use the full strength, off the shelf ammo.
Good to know! Thanks for the information.
Good accent great video keep up the great work 💪
That’s the truth with .40. During the pandemic, I was one of very few not to early in the Academy line to walk out of the store with something at 9:10/9:15am after the store opening at 9am.
It’s never a bad idea to keep a few boxes of random calibers, you never know when you might buy a new rifle or find someone that needs what you have. You could have made a big profit during the recent shortage
I'm like Creedmoor. Have gas issues 😆 nice vid
12 gauge is still reasonable and plentiful. From slugs to buckshot, to birdshot, the stuff is even at Walmart. There are also good shotguns available new and used. I like the Mossberg/Maverick line of pump shotguns. They have a proven track record.
glok 22 was great to carry in the field.
yes a 22 glok werked
saved my life many times
LIVLRG
Lol I hunt with 30/06 bolt action and man it’s hard hitting so it’s go too. I do haha every 6.5 along with several in your list sure not semi but bolt. However when hunting I’ve seen what a round can do. I’d stick with my 30/06. But a round is logistical to situation. With what I have I’d be more classified a sniper not a room clearing type. Great video on explaining calibers.
300AAC, & 308 Winchester also gets made in steel case, and it’s very affordable.
Stockpiling ammo is tough when you don't have disposable income, so I also stockpile ammo that was designed for black powder and can shoot a lead bullet (non-jacketed). I simply stock the consumables required to keep them loaded. I will use my good ammo for things like defense. In my area hunting is usually what would be considered a short range shot, so I chose the 38 special/357 mag. Of course when I started this over thirty years ago I could buy a bag of about 1300 pieces of once shot 38 brass for $20. I would buy a bag or 2 each time I went to the gun show. I might have chosen a larger round if those 38's weren't so darn cheep.
My ar10 had cycling issues with 6.5 creedmoor. I got a firing pin, bolt and heavier buffer designed for the ar10 and 6.5 cm. It cycles very reliably now!
That's good to know! Sounds like some tuning might be required. Did certain bullet weights affect it as well?
@@MagicPrepper It wouldn't cycle reliably at all when I first bought it, getting progressively worse. I tried remington, sellier and bellot, winchester and hornady. There was no pattern or difference with any of them. When I took the .308 bolt apart, there was a bunch of primer fragments in the ejector and around the firing pin. It had been punching out primers! It seems to cycle any type of ammo well now, but I have not fully tested it.
Now you just need to change the barrel to 308 and it will be fixed
@@chuckfinley3152 I got it 'as is' at a great price. I'm satisfied with it after modification.
@@chuckfinley3152 💯
Not sure if this was mentioned but 30-30 is pretty common most people with a lever action have 30-30 or 45-70
350 legend is a great option, it’s getting popular even Walmart still has it all the time
Consider also that every major gun company has been manufacturing 30 06 hunting rifles for the last hundred plus years, and that equals a probability of finding good used rifles for 30 06 well into any post apocolypse situation: but the same could be said of 30 30.
Yup 30-30 would have been a good addition. I only left it out due to the platform restrictions.
@@MagicPrepper Yeah, I consider my BO my new versatile 30-30.
30 carbine is a fun little cartridge! I've only ever seen the one I was able to shoot but boy was it neat!
As for your thought process on a "high powered" cartridge, if you intend to get outside of 308 or 6.5 cm you're probably better off just going to a good quality bolt gun. The 243 is the only cartridge you mentioned that is actually compatible with the "AR10" platform and while the 30-06 and 300wm have semi auto options available they are incredibly hard to find and when you do it'll cost a small fortune to obtain! An option that you didn't mention that I believe to be a reasonable choice is 30-30 winchester, I don't believe that they make steel case but there is relatively affordable brass available.
Have not seen 30-30 in these parts in quite some time.In fact I know a person that just bought one used and was looking for ammo. I told him I would bet that's why it was for sale.
@@johnpoole8321 I find it interesting how it differs from area to area on what is available. I've seen 30-30 pretty regularly, 30-06 and 300wm have been pretty rare, even 6.5cm has been hard to find
My wife shoots .357 mag and trains with .38spc so I stock them. All my full size rifle calibers I reload them especially my magnum calibers.
As a fan of .40, and someone who’s used .40 for many years now, I have NEVER, EVER, seen steel-cased .40S&W ammo… not online, not at gun shows where I’ve picked up ammo.. that’s pretty wild. Shows how you can know a lot about the topic after being into it all your life like I’ve been… and still not know something. Wild
A little Tidbit for ya, Tula makes steel case 40. It's been next to impossible to find over the last two years, but I find it very accurate and has more bang than the blazer I was using. It was going for .22 cents a round before the "Ammogaden".
Right before the plandemic I got a bunch of .40s&w with aluminum case. They were dirt cheap. It was right about the time Rona hit Washington state. After that it all got expensive
It seems like it's sticking around!
@@MagicPrepper great job on your videos! You are providing a valuable service and helping a lot of people out who otherwise wouldn’t have much of a clue how to prep/protect themselves. God bless. Stay safe out there!!
Hard to beat the good old 30-30. Fairly affordable, available, and reliable. Add to it that in most rural areas, in a SHTF scenario, you will likely find grampas old boom stick collecting dust in abandoned homes so sourcing a replacement shouldn't be a big issue.
One other note on the 30.06: blacktip ammo is still available bit pricy. AP. From what I read, its legal to own.
;) it's not a bad thing is it?
solid advice here 5.45 is not a cheap option now adays. love my ak 74 , but 223 is cheap by far way more available. Also 7.62 is like the 45 of the former comblock countries no one really wants to use it because well it hits hard but not fast or far. Also for most ak platform riffles steel case tends to be the better option if not on par with brass.
30 06 for sure , that's where you find tracers api and m2 ball fmj rds
Shhh ;)
Almost thought about stocking .40sw or 380 because suprisingly available throughout the pndmc. I was originally stocking 9mm (primary handgun rd) and .38spl/.357mag (backup caliber)... Luckily, NATO rounds were available but scarcly...
I would defiantly not describe 38/357 as my back up caliber even though indoctrinated now by the school of 9mm.
38/357 Where my first Primary b4 I fell to peer pressure of Glock.
Don't tell Glock I Still take them out when he's not around.
@@FLsheepdog1 I was the same way. S&W 686+ was my first handgun.
Same :(
If for some reason my first (NATO) and second tier (Russian) platforms were a no go my third tier is .357 Magnum/.38 Special wheel guns and .30-30 lever actions.
sounds good
I stockpiled 6.5grendel 7.62x39. 3006. 22lr 20guage. 9mm. I replaced like 5 calibers with 6.5grendel. Got lucky when it was 230$ a 1000 for steel cased wolf. And the others are literally everywhere no matter what. Much of it's steel. But it goes bang. And I keep it sealed.
I wish they made steel case 6.5 creedmoor. That's what I've been stocking up on. But I seem to be shooting more than saving lol.
Honestly any ammo is better than no ammo when the balloon goes up until you can scavenge other types. I also keep lots of 12 gauge in various loads because when hunting small game or even large game the 12 gauge can make it happen up close. I have hunted deer for years on BLM land with it and put meat in the freezer. You can't take long shots so you have to become a more stealthier hunter like a bow hunter to bring home the meat.
I was watching 1911 Syndicate's recent "If I could Only Keep 5 Guns" video and I was surprised that neither of the guys chose to have a 12ga as 1 of their 5. I would.
I'm also pretty broad - but while being broad is flexible, it is also more expensive (and thus less efficient).
Still, once you have gone deep on the basics (.22, 9mm, .223, .308. and 12g), going broad can be fun if you have shooting/collecting as a hobby to justify the expense beyond just prepping.
That said, I'm not planning to scavenge ammo. I try to have at least two firearms for each caliber I get into and to have enough ammo to wear out at least one of those firearms.
The only real advantage of being broad is not scavenging, but trade. Whatever ammo someone has scavenged I can probably use - and if their firearm in the caliber is not functional or they just found ammo, then it is likely to be a very favorable trade for me. Likewise, whatever someone is using, I can likely supply them. Consider someone hunting with their grandad's old 8mm Mauser (a very common rifle for the purpose 60-70 years ago). Grandpa probably only had a handful of all shells with it, but if the fellow can hunt with it, how much of a deer is he going to be willing to trade for the few rounds it took to take it so that he can go out and take another? Especially when preservation is more difficult and his family isn't likely to eat the who thing before it is getting ripe anyways without extra effort.
Trading hunting rounds to hunter for a portion of their take is going to be a good (and safe) trade - since you know they are not desperate, as they got game, and you know the purpose the rounds are dedicated to. When you are supplying a hunter, you are essentially hiring his man hours at an exceptionally favorable rate.

set up to reload 12 ga, and you have dove, quail, pheasant, duck, goose, rabbit, wild hogs deer, mule deer elk, bear of all kinds, food all year long. people don't think what is simple. oh, and by the way, two legged varmits also.
Surprisingly, you don't like 44 magnum. Works good in a lever action too.

I love my 6.5 Creedmoor, both Bolt rifles both shoot awesome with no problem. Bolt rifles are awesome. Love my 308 rifles too. The 30/30 lever action rifles are awesome love my 30/30. Can't find 30/30 ammunition supply anywhere. Can't beat a good old 12ga shotgun pump action they will run and shoot any type of 12ga ammunition.
6.5 CM is an impressive round.
.40 was there like always lol, glad u admitted it lol
40 s&w is STILL a superior cartridge to 9mm in regards to terminal ballistics, wound cavity, energy delivered on target, etc, regardless of what the hip crowd says is cool. I'm proud to say I never stopped using or buying it...even though I have switched to 9mm for EDC. Lol 😆
Exactly what I think and did 😂 I love my 40 but edc 9mm micro pistol is way too nice
I am a 40 cal guy but 9mm is goid to have because it is so prevalent and popular for now anyway..... but the .40 is so much better ballistically speaking.
It has more energy but, enough to make a real difference? That's up for debate I guess? We're not getting hydrostatic shock sooo... 😉 🥄🍯
@@MagicPrepper apples to apples rounds the .40 does better. Stouter loads of the 9 def beat out the 40. But that's stouter loads lol

@@thomascrompton7775 I was told it’s made on the same lines and process used to make 223 and 9mm. Supposedly that makes it easier to produce and a better price. I’ve seen 350 legend steadily available here in my part of TX even if a month or two there was none now and then. Now it’s everywhere.

Love my .357 Henry!
I personally stick with nato for my main guns, mainly for simplification and affordability. But there’s nothing wrong with Warsaw Pact/combloc platforms either. Also I would add, stick to common large rifle calibers to your are. .270, 30.06, 308, 30-30, .243, etc are extremely common in my area for hunting
Our local gun shop has twice the .40 as the have 9mm. Somewhere in the ballpark of 50000 rounds.
I stockpile 7.62x51,x39,5.56x45/223 ,5.45x39 Warsaw eastern pact/wep, 45acp, 9mm and 12 gauge I stockpile at least 2000 rounds for all especially rifle rounds
12 gauge 1000 shells maybe 1500
I stockpile ammo for guns I do not even own, got it cheap. If SHTF happens I bet I could make friends and trade those for things maybe I need. My friend does not smoke but has lot of cartons of cigs and even cigars. I also stock lots of parts for my guns, If they break, I can fix them. And you can never have to much .308
Looking down the business end of an M1 Garand, you will get off the lawn, but what about 30-30? Makarov should still make a cameo, there's a bunch of pistols in it. It's about equal to 380.
Love 40s&w people only really hate on it from my experience is because it’s to snappy I say more for me than
I think if you are going to run something that is not NATO you should probably go with com bloc type stuff. That being said I like the way you went with this. I think my hi power would be a bolt gun in 7mm rem mag. But the ammo, at least right now, is a little scarce for some reason.
Good info as usual.
QUICK QUESTION. Had to use my last Ivermectin script ( wife caught the cold) I can't remember what service I used. Anybody have a link?? Thanks
i'm also interested post it here if you remember. i'll do the horse paste if i must but i'd prefer the human grade pill
One thing id like to add is that you can own a 10mm and fire .40 out of it just by swapping the barrel.
Well thought out video and presentation. My theory on this is to stockpile NATO and common US calibers in bulk. But own a few rifles that are chambered in our most likely enemies calibers. If it come down to it, by the time we run out of our ammo we should have racked up a ton of battlefield ammo pickups.
Our main enemies use NATO calibers.
@@Skinnymoose China and Russia?
Or you could just steal their guns after you eradicate them lol
I am going with 357 / 38 they interchange in a .357 hand gun and they are older than 40s and they are everywhere across the country and did not run out during the ammo collapse in most areas .Actually in a SHTF stockpile round it would be .12 ga winner all across the us and from slugs to heavier shot to buck it will win and it does not need to be in a semi platform to win any gunfight with the right ammo inside 100 to 150 yards , It is likely the most plentiful ammo aside from the 22 in this country its in every house in ever drawer even in cities .
Agree
I'll just hoard everything I can get🤣
Never know when a battlefield pickup will present itself 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Good job as always brother!
Haha the good ole' battlefield pick up.
@@MagicPrepper 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Just want to say that if you put one of those bell shaped flash hiders on the 30 carbine, you don't see a flash sooo good night fighting rifle???
.40's also allow 3 calibers in one handgun
I inherited a .40 cal Glock 27 and haven’t used it much yet. When I have I’ve only used .40 cal but what are you saying?
Just get a .357 Sign barrel and it will run great. Get a 9mm conversion barrel and magazines and it'll run 9mm. I've heard of people running 9mm out of their 40 magazines but I've never tried it mainly because I have 9mm mags. The Glock 22, 23, and 27 run like a top. I'm sure the 35 would as well,, I just don't happen to have a 35.
Purchased an SKS just for this reason and a 357 magnum.
7.62 x 39, 30-06, and .38 special for stock piling
5.7x 28 in my keltec p50 is a awesome round
Seems like the the Ruger pistol and carbine would be more pragmatic than the Kel Tec. Not that I have bias against Kel Tec, because I don't. I actually love their stuff, but utilitarian rules my choices...
What ever you shoot stock it deep, practice, practice, practice!
Training is still worth more than a stockpile.
Perhaps the 30/30 is worth considering. The pros: not semi auto but still able to be rapidly shot, the round is potent enough to kill any animal in North America, possible to load with bullets/ powder from .308 (and single loaded or one in the chamber, one in the tube if it will feed). I don’t know if they make a steel case version, but the ammo is less expensive than many other rifle cartridges. Its widely in use as well. Cons: no detachable mag on most platforms (maybe the browning blr?), limited capacity, optics can be an issue on some platforms.
I agree! I almost added it if not for the platform restrictions.
OAL would be an issue if salvaging 308 bullets, I've looked at throttling back and running a 150 fmj tail forward in a 30-30. A Lee factory crimp die I think would anchor them if the cannelure doesn't match up.
@@MarcoAtlarge I did it with some degree of success, enough to take a deer and do some plinking. I have a few old Winchesters, ‘48- ‘53. One simply will not lift the longer cartridges (.308 bullet on a 3030 case), but the others will. There’s definitely some machining differences between them. Ill have to check out the crimping setup, Ive had issues with regular 3030 loads pushing the bullets into the cases after theyhave been loaded in the tube a couple times, perhaps that would help.
I have 350 legend rounds and do not have a gun for them but still I have some for trade once the apocalypse happens.
I stock x39 x54r and x51
Any thoughts on 17hmr wheel ggun?
