  • In this woodturning video I turn a natural edge vessel turned from a very hard piece of Oak burl. There were lots of inclusions in this piece which I was tempted to fill with resin but I decided to leave it natural and finished it with a Danish oil..

At 7:26 I stopped and just said WOW! That grain is just plain gorgeous! I'll watch the rest but I was sold right there. I REALLY enjoy what you do. Thank yiou. --- LATER --- I did watch the rest and this is stunning. Thank you for NOT doing resin on this. Knowing when to quit is a very special skill.

I'm looking forward to seeing more of that little hedgehog that was hiding on the shelf behind this burl when you first took it down, but today's project might be my new favorite. I love the way you sanded the inclusions to make them part of the beauty of the piece instead of flaws.

What a fun and beautiful vase. I wish you would've shown us the finiished inside at the very end. The earlier glimpse seemed to be even prettier grain than the outside. That and shone a flashlight inside the vase in a slightly darkened room. It would've been interesting to see the effect of light on the wall being emitted from the cracks. Even still, very much enjoyed the video. Thanks for sharing.

That is a very creative use of a woodworm screw in a chuck on a surface that is not in perfect contact with the jaws of the chuck. I never thought to try that. The extended jam chuck that you used to detail the bottom of the vase was something that I need to try.

  • @y_fam_goeglyd

That is exquisite! The shape works perfectly with the grain and the oil brings everything out. As they say these days, it "pops"!
It doesn't matter what you do: what piece of wood you have; what shape it starts and ends as; what level of simplicity or intricacy; what outcome you require; whether you use those swirling colours in the resin or "just" a single colour painted on it in certain places, or what finish you use (e.g. this beautiful oil), absolutely everything you do becomes a stunning work of art.
I don't know if you have a physical (rather than digital) gallery, but you should have one to show prospective buyers the works in their very best light. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with your online presentation, but you're relying on _us_ to have sufficiently good screens to see things close to how they really are!
I wish I'd learned about wood turning decades ago when I was physically capable of doing it. (I knew _of_ it, but as with so many things back then, doing woodwork at school as a girl would have required so many hoops to jump through and my mother wouldn't have been happy about it either! Dad, on the other hand, let me use his tools - including his jigsaw, drill, etc - from about 7 years-old 😅. I wasn't allowed to cook until I was about 10 because I couldn't see over the tops of the various pans. Safety first!)
Now various disabilities would stop me even trying. Arthritic hands don't let me knit or embroider anymore, and I used to do single thread embroidery with the smallest, sharpest needles - about as intricate as that gets - and other techniques such as pulled threads (making the first snip of thread was scary!). Given that, "shaving" the external shape of a vase would be impossible after about 30 seconds. Had I learned back then, at least I'd have had a few decades of being so creative! Well, _trying_ to be so creative 😂😂😂.
Still, you do inspire me to get my watercolour pencils out, now and then. Even my oil paints. So thank you for keeping that faint internal light of creativity switched on. I _genuinely_ mean every word of this and I am _genuinely_ grateful. Sorry for the essay, but again, thank you for sharing your awesome talent.

That is an absolute corker. I love your natural edge pieces. And you were right not to fill the cracks. The beauty of this piece comes from the grain and the way it springs into focus with a rich varnish. Anyone with good technical skills could do the colour pencil type of thing, but transforming a grotty old bit of timber into a thing of beauty is fine art. Do your wrists ache after working on very hard timber?
