Two Certified US Stamps I Bought To Use For Color Reference

  • I purchased US #64 & 65 certified with the intention of using them as a color reference for early US stamps. I am building my Mystic albums and want to make sure I am putting proper stamps. However, this was almost an experiment just for fun. Even though my extra potential #64 stamps were in poor enough condition I couldn't confidently decide their color, I found this an educational experience and am ultimately glad I bought them.
Having stamps in your collection to use as a color reference will likely be convenient.

Thank you I was actually wondering that two days ago and even though I have great Apple devices it is still hard to tell the difference just off of pictures on the web.

I found actual cards by Scott that have the colors and names of colors kind of like paint samples. Very handy

I see, I could not find them on google but found a Stanley Gibbons Stamp Color Key which seems to be the same idea. Figures there are resources out there to help identify these stamps, much cheaper than how I did this, haha.

If you want to see real colors, use lighter fluid it allows color to pop out

Shades i find interesting ,best viewed in natural lite there are many unlisted every printlng is different , hate to see you wasting your money on damaged stamps corner perf faults ruin stamps . The world is awash with stamps catalogue values are of little use bordering on fraudulent the only value of any stamp is your value nobody elses .

I don't think one pulled perf makes the stamp completely worthless or wasted money. The only reason I paid that price was because it has been expertized. From what I've read, catalog prices are based off of former stamp sales and they are a best case scenario, even for a reputable dealer. Now I'm still learning but this is my understanding so far:
If someone is not a dealer but sells stamps they should expect to get 10-20% of catalog price for most stamps, excluding highly collectible stamps like Zeppelins, which command almost all of their catalog value if in proper condition.. If it is expertized, then the sale price goes up closer to 30-40%. So, if #64 has a $600 cat value I would expect to pay around 10-20% for it at $60-120. Although, since it is expertized, it should be closer to 30-40% at $180-240. Using that logic, by spending $208, I did not overpay.
However, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and there are plenty of collectors that are extremely anal about their stamps so even one pulled perf makes it worthless to them, that I can understand. This particular one when compared to the other expertized options on Hipstamp had clearly less toning and a more vibrant color. Since I did mainly buy it to use for color reference, even though it isn't perfect, it suited my intended purpose well.
