Why My Sleeper 5.9 Limited Gets So Much Hate

That's dope man, these Jeeps are built different than the new ones. ZJs are fast, loud, and reliable. This is why I own 2 of them, a heads/cam 5.2 ZJ and this full bolt on 5.9 ZJ. The only other Jeep I would possibly own would be the last 3 years of the WK1 SRT8. Trackhawks are cool, but at 5300 lbs it's not the one for me. I like the older V8 Jeeps that are smaller and lighter.

Thanks brother. How did they not know it was a 5.9 Limited ? Unless it was debadged it says it on both front doors, the rear liftgate, and under the hood on the vehicle information sticker. Some people are just too stupid to pay any attention to the finer details. How many miles were on it ? That is a great deal if it was running and driving.

@@98ZJ318 Actually, I am going to be frank as it kinda sucks right now. It just felt slow after my first drive. 0-60 was horrible at about 5.8 seconds - so slow. The engine sounded great but felt really slow considering it should have about 450hp and 490tq. I took it to my local dyno and surprising I was making good power but I did have a dead spot in the rpm band where some custom tuning is needed to correct it. Still, I believe to optimize the power the engine is putting out I need to swap my differential gears from the 3.73 to something way more aggressive like 4.88. I don't care too much about losing some of my top end as I am not going to be going 140 mph too often in it, if ever. I also need to do some custom tuning on the dyno to finalize stuff and eliminate the dead spot where I drop power substantially. Probably in a month I should have it all sorted out and hopefully it feels a lot faster. I will let you know how it goes. Thanks brother.

My dad bought a white 5.9 almost brand new. We towed our four wheelers and went on many trips. That think was an absolute joy to floor from a dead stop, getting up to speed entering a highway, or when trying to get out in front of some traffic! 😁 I remember getting a super cars book in school and seeing our jeep being in it and thinking that was so cool!
The 12 miles to the gallon gas mileage was horrendous though, I guess it cost to have fun though. 😎

The 5.9 Limiteds are still my favorite all around Jeeps. They were the fastest SUV in the world from 1998 - 2003 (surpassed by BMW X5) and they were the fastest Jeep in the world from 1998 - 2006 (surpassed by the WK1 SRT8 Jeep). The 5.9 ZJ is still the meanest looking and best on and off road Jeep ever built. They are compact and lightweight for an SUV, they drive very well, they pull hard, and the 360 sounds incredible when it's modified for more power.

Great video! Love to see that it's been kept street and not modded for the trails. I bought my teen son a Niner as a first vehicle. Was super clean and he's had it for 3 years and says he'll keep it forever. We have 6 Grand Cherokees in family right now. Two 2015 Overlands. One Hemi one Diesel. Two 2008 Overlands. Both Hemis. One is mine and has a few upgrades. I have a 93 Limited V8 too that's got only 160k and mint condition. Got it last month as garage find, one owner old man. Rustproofing since new and 90% original parts. My mechanic was shocked how clean it is. Love the original clean style of the ZJ too. Never made a video but maybe when the weather is nice I'll show them off. With any luck by then I'll find another clean Niner to save. Happy motoring and safe travels.

Damn dude, you really love Jeeps. Sounds like you have a very nice collection of ZJs, WJs, and WK1s. A 1993 ZJ with 160,000 miles is extremely low for a 27 year old vehicle. A Niner is such a good first vehicle. I wish I got my Niner before my 5.2, I would have done heads/cam to the 5.9 ZJ and it would have made 400 HP to the crank instead of 370 or 380 HP on the built 5.2 ZJ. The only other Jeep I would want to get in the future is the WK1 SRT8 with the 6.1L Hemi. I was in one once, they are just as a fully built ZJ when they are fully stock and they weigh 4,800 lbs. the Trackhawks weigh 5,300 lbs, that’s too much weight. I would rather Hellcat swap a ZJ then have a Trackhawk, ZJs only weight around 4,000 lbs, they are very light for an SUV. That is what I like the most about ZJs, lightweight SUV with a big pushrod V8 with 4WD and RWD option when you do the transfer case swap. Happy and healthy holidays and New Years to you and yours brother. Stay blessed.

@@98ZJ318 Hey thanks for the reply. To be honest I'm not a mechanic and know basic about vehicles but I know what I like. I watch videos like yours and others and mod according to the best ideas people have. I wish I could be that gear head but that's not me. It's down to the love of a vehicle and it's ability. For me the GC checks all the boxes. At the end of the day I see them as an MMA fighter. Not the best at one thing but amazing at all. Besides anyone who has issues just doesn't take care of their stuff. Nothing lasts forever but things can definitely last a lifetime and we hope to do that with these ones. Unfortunately winter is a bitch whore and salt is her crack addict sister and they both have rusty desires on vehicles in my area. And the 93 ZJ has only 160,000kms not miles. That just 99420 miles! I think it's probably the lowest mileage one I've seen anywhere lately. Total time capsule.

Same exact thing here, my mom had a forest green '96 5.2 laredo that I was supposed to get as my first vehicle. In 2006 It got totaled by a drunk MTA shuttle bus driver around the block from my house unfortunately. It had 126k on the odometer and the Jeep was just getting broken in because my mom babied it for its whole life. The Jeep was extremely reliable and never had any major repairs done, the only things that were ever replaced were the battery and the radiator. In September of 2007 I ended up getting a platinum '98 5.2 Limited with 80k miles, now it's painted black and built with heads/cam and full bolt ons. In April of 2013 I got my platinum 5.9 with 134k miles and I only paid $800, the 46RE needed a rebuild. Now it's full bolt ons. I didn't know that the 5.9 Limited even existed until I found one on UA-cam back in 2006, then after getting the 5.2 Limited and knowing there was a more bad ass ZJ that was built and the fact that they are really rare (1 year production,14,286 total, 10,051 with federal emissions, 4,235 with California emissions), I knew I needed a 5.9 ZJ.

New distributor, coil, etc. needed and the 249 starting to act up. Still embarasses a lot of newer vehicles! Only about 14,000 of these were made and only in 1998, the last year of the ZJ. Many have been totalled or scrapped during the "cash for clunkers" disaster. Mine is a Canadian model so probably even rarer. I don't plan on ever letting it go. Enjoy yours!

Not sure on the Canadian production numbers but it was 14,286 total units produced, 10,051 with federal emissions and 4,235 with California emissions. They are definitely worth more when all stock and unmolested but these things are such a beast when modified. The Orvis Edition and the 5.9 Limited are the 2 rarest and nicest ZJ models that were built, hold on to that Jeep for as long as possible. People hate on these ZJs because they don't realize how quick and lightweight they are for an SUV, considering it is outdated technology from the 90s that still works well to this day. It makes people mad that they work so well for how old they are and then they hate out of jealousy or confusion because their newer car is slower than a 22+ year old SUV.

I have a 98 5.2 litre limited and it's the Bomb! Comfortable as hell reliable and fast as far as I'm concerned especially when you run the Gears and ain't afraid to drive it like a man! It gets great gas mileage to if you drive it normal -- although I won't lie it's hard to because it's so fun when your getting on it Oh yea not to mention it's basically un fuckin stoppable !! Me personally I love the 249 transfer case - it wins me every race especially when it's raining out or just plain wet out. Great fun in a plush nice ride. Keep it up a0nd thanks for your story! DT

Agreed, best Jeep ever built. I have been in a lot of other Jeeps including a WK1 SRT8 and none of them do everything perfectly like the 5.9 ZJ. It's a muscle car with 4WD and ground clearance, it's a true on and off road SUV, and it's small and lightweight for a Jeep. They will never make another Jeep as cool as the 5.9 Limited.

It's time to redline that 5.9, they move out. Got mine at 134k in 2013, now it's at 140k. Never been off-road on rough terrain once, that's why it's in good condition still. It sucks when people build Niners to go off-road, leave that to the 4.0 ZJ and 5.2 ZJ which are much less rare than a 5.9 ZJ.
