    The reason there’s poor quality of flats isn’t because there’s a large group people renting private it’s due to the fact that the planning regulations were torn up.

    The fact is the people who own houses don't want lots of new house because it will reduce their house value. Huge percentage of people don't really want it sadly.

      I have to disagree, investors and landlords don’t want house prices to drop as it’s pure profit. For people living in houses or looking to buy then it’s win win, less money to upgrade to a bigger home as when prices drop they all drop and that frees up houses at the bottom for young people

  • @sarahjane5129

    1 year later homes are 300,000.
    If the prices drop, incredibly rich people that can afford it will buy them up fast for above the asking price and rent them out . More people owning more than one home and more people not even being able to purchase a first. The gap will only get bigger

    Easy solution, tax second houses with 25% VAT and property tax of 10% per year, and third houses and above at 50% VAT and 20% per year. Watch the supply explode as speculators and investors dump houses and suddenly, the fact that there are more houses than people in the world will be reflected in markets.

    • @danielhalm5792
      @danielhalm5792 2 роки тому

      That might help, but it won’t solve the problem and it’s not the best solution given it could disrupt existing developers by forcing them to lose money on recent developments (they would not be able to sell to as many second-homeowners and instead at lower prices to first-time buyers). A better way is to increase the housing supply through a long-term reduction in planning regulation.

    • @s0vhjfe4SA08adc9js

      @@danielhalm5792 It depends what you think the "problem" is, which you seem to think is undersupply, and it it actually were a problem, would much more easily be solved by immigration caps and expansion of public housing. Actually though, the data shows that housing per capita is on par with the United States, while lower than the EU, isn't particularly low. With a .424 home to person ratio, the spike in prices is more due to gross market failures primarily from overconsolidation of the real estate sector by investors, paired with a huge and consistent influx of foreign (Chinese) absentee buyers.

      True that the apartments won’t go away, but it will make maintenance uneconomical and buildings will go into disrepair. Besides, new apartments will be built in fewer numbers and in poorer quality. The best solution to lower prices is more competition, which is only achieved with lower regulation, easier business registration, and lower tax rates on new developers.

    I think the problem is in lots of immigrants, not in new homes.
    To be honest, I’m also an expat. My husband and I moved here as professionals.
    Being Russians we had to obtain working Visas. We were waiting for visas for 3 months. We had to pass IELTS, proof qualification, make tuberculosis check. An employer spent thousands of pounds for our visas providing sponsorship. We can live in the UK only while we have a well paid job, an employer which provides sponsorship, in other case we have to leave.
    On the other hand, I see immigrants who even don’t know English and they don’t need any sponsorship, work, visa to live here. Some of them even don’t want to work. Someone stole my wallet with BRP, driving license and money. Рoliсe can’t deal with all cases. We see increasing robberies, stabbing. I suppose these things have some connection to immigrants. I don’t want to blame anyone, but this is the reality.
    And It’s not about Brexit. It’s about different attitude to different nations. Some people don’t have any limits to stay in the UK and they use their rights up 150%.
    We live on island. The country literally has borders. It can’t provide homes and work for everyone in the world. Especially for people who can’t make positive impact.
    I think, there should be strong rules for every nation without exception. Make the standarts for immigrants, for jobs for immigrants. Strict rules. All candidates have to show how they can be useful. If they pass all tests, they can live here, otherwise they have to train and work more and try again.

    This program tells me whitout any doubt that the BBC is biased and also working to protect the top part of the British society. We don't really need to build more houses. We just need a law that says: you can own only the house you live in and a second house for holiday ( which you cannot rent). If you want to own more houses, you need to pay a considerable fee for each one, and you will never be able to rent them. You don't need to be a genius to understand that this would fix the problem, just need to be honest...an honest journalist.

    This is NOT just a supply side issue. The number one reason house price inflation has run rampant over the past 20+ years is ultra cheap and loose credit. This cheap, easy credit almost destroyed the financial system in 2008, and has been propped up ever since. The average salary has stayed the same IN NOMINAL terms for almost the same period that average house prices have doubled. The only genuine explanation for this is that credit has exploded and in addition to allowing people to bid up prices it has made investing in property very attractive... If your savings account is getting 1.03% interest, ANY yield from a BTL looks good. So the stage has been set for BTL and corporate landlordism. Sadly every party is full to the brim with BTL landlords and they are in no hurry to stop interferring.

      The reason for such high demand is due as much to low interest rates as it is population growth. Investors switched to bricks and mortar when interest rates on savings tumbled. The whole thing was designed to get foreign money into the country. It worked, as Arab billionaires and Russian crooks laundered their money in the UK through the property market. It will only stop when housing is seen as homes and not investment. I hope it tumbles and these billionaire property investment portfolios crash. If there is a world war then that will be the likely scenario.

    As a homeowner, and a self employed Architect who makes his living from other homeowners, I believe we have let house prices get way out of control. I seriously worry about the prospects for future generations if we don’t address this now;
    Scrap the green belt, no half measures.
    Change the planning system from case-by-case to zonal.
    Fund the creation of new towns.
    Start a proper apprenticeship system at secondary school, like the German model, we need WAY more tradespeople.
    Get the government back into the building game, the private sector cannot and will not meet demand.
    Even if we did these radical moves it’s likely to take a generation for supply to meet demand. The best case is that housing prices stay flat for a few decades, allowing wages to catch up in real terms.

If they are, then they're working harder/smarter/earning more and thus can afford what you can not. Simple. The government was running a program subsidising the Emigration of Native British Islanders at the time, which they continued for many years seeing the departure of over 1million people. We want 3 or 4 bedroom houses with 80 to 100 foot gardens with garages and multiple off road parking spaces. & then because our wages are very poor compared to the US we need to half all taxes taxes so more money is in people's pockets to keep up with the massively high prices. 30k in 1995 on £200 a week for a 3 bedroom house with a garage and garden with multiple off road spaces and now it's worth 300k so it's made allot of people very rich while left others with no way to buy a house in the future as these same people own multiple houses and put them on the market to rent at £700.

    Since this video was made, in my area, I've seen dozens of empty properties, if no one has lived in them for a certain amount of time then they should be allowed to be taken over, yes they may require work, but at least it gets people on the housing ladder and the council gets council tax from the property.
    Another issue that needs addressing is the cost of rent, there needs to be a rent cap, it's got out of hand, something has to be done. Another thing that needs to be capped is the amount of properties anyone can own, it's pure breed from landlords who are allowed to get away with it

    Government will never be able to meet market demand for housing.
    To fix this we must look at the systemic reason why the land that is already out there and available is not meeting the demand.
    Hoarders and speculators are awaiting profits off these unending rises in housing. They are profiting off the efforts of their community while doing nothing!
    Only land value taxes will push them to develop sell so actually productive members of the community can live and create opportunities for themselves and others.

    I don't know about Britain specifically, but this video does not address the root cause of housing shortages everywhere: zoning laws. Usually, housing shortages are caused by governments imposing strict zoning laws that prevent the measures that could alleviate the shortages, such as restrictions on building height, minimum house size, and non-safety related building codes for houses, which make them more expensive and harder to build. Get rid of these restrictions, and you'd see a lot more skyscraper apartment complexes and tiny houses, which would go a long way toward solving this problem.
