I had to get this certain medicine every 4 hours (vencomycin) and it ran for an hour. In the night time I had a hard time sleeping because I had to keep my arm straight or it'd stop and I'd have to call a nurse. And my night nurse was so so sweet. She came in no matter how many times and would wrap my arm in this sling to keep me comftorable. And when I couldn't sleep because of anxiety she helped find me a movie on the TV and was so sweet to me. She brought me snacks and Sprite and was just a blessing.

      It's a real problem. After putting in the time and money for the education you can guess how hard it would be to say "I don't like this, despite the great pay, I think I'll go back to school".
      Also, I'm not an RN, I'm an RT, but once I got really burnt out and got out of healthcare for 2 years. It was incredibly hard to get a job, I was unemployed for 9 months and only got jobs through contacts. With eally less pay. But I couldn't keep on working not caring about the patients.
      And then, some people are just sociopaths-up to 25% according to some studies.

      Because I went to a pulmonary doctor a week ago because of some fluid around my lungs. I had to have it drained via tube and needle in my left side.
      He said that I was the easiest patient he dealt with. He went on to say how male patients are always screaming, shouting, kicking, swearing, etc.

    Nurses work REALLY hard...in my opinion harder than doctors. (You won't see a doctor taking your temp, getting you water or a blanket, making sure you get your pain meds, etc.) We all need to appreciate what they do for us. We are not their only patient. They work long hours and have other patients who are worse than we are. Personally, when I need something, I try to get it or do it on my own instead of hitting the call button. But only if it is safe. I've been in a room with other patients and get frustrated when they call for stuff they can do/get on their own. If everyone stopped calling for a straw, more water, Kleenex, etc. it would make it so that they can spend the time they need with other more serious patients. And when you are discharged or are leaving an appointment, take a minute to thank them for being there and helping us. Trust me, it will make them happy.

    6:46 honestly. You know which patients press the call light for when they actually need something and those who always call for the most ridiculous things. Like between one who only calls when they need help getting up from bed to use the restroom or the other who calls to complain about the temperature in the room or to pick something up thats right next to them when they can get up, you are going to prioritize the one who actually needs the help than the one who calls for something that can wait when there are multiple lights going off.

      Tbh the nurse that did say yes to that should absolutely be reviewed by her employer. It's something that you just don't do and isn't ok. When you work at the ER it's too crowded and it's messy and usually the rude patients are the people who don't want to wait because they think they're too good for that and in most cases, they aren't in real life threatening danger. When you've worked for a long time, you can tell the state of the patient, just by looking at them. No one who's feeling unwell will dramatize and yell at a nurse.

    • @beastbeautiful1
      @beastbeautiful1 5 років тому +18

      @@icedcoffeeb4900 there are some people who have mental illness like anxiety and in those situations it makes things worse. So now you have a spiteful nurse that pushed a person down the list who could go into a full blown panic attack due to their mental illness. Just cuz someone is a nurse doesn't mean they are able to tell if the px the person just bumped is going to get worse physically or mentally.

    I had a patient who would use the bell for EVERYTHING like he would want me to pour him his water when he had water and a cup like 20cm away from him. One would call us to feed him even though he is entirely capable on his own. There was a patient who decided that she didnt want to get up at night to pee so she would call and ask that we DRAINED HER URINE FOR HER!! One patient would call us to get him juice every 30 minutes!! He didnt drink any water just juice all day AND NIGHT. Had a patient who called fir us to switch tv station for him WITH HIS REMOTE CONTROL. This are a few exemple... So when patient like thes are on a unit for several week after 2 weeks we take more time to answer your call light because this is the kind of need we expect.... Yes call light are important but patient need to know that we have a job to do that isnt to nurture them... we are not your mom and you are not 6. (Well if you're in peds it's another story)

      Dr. Jack Bright same energy as
      Me: “I’m dying.”
      School nurses: “here’s an ice pack.”

    Q: what would a nurse attend to first? (a) a respiratory distress patient (b) hang blood (c) give meds or (d) answer a call light. the answer is will always be a>b>c>d.
    A tech can answer the call light. A ward clerk can answer the call light. A RN must answer the call light, but in context of critical thinking and priority.
    Also! If 2 patients with the same non life threatening issue come in the ER and you have to pick 1 to help first... who would it be? The a*hole or the nice one??
