Jennifer Reeves I absolutely agree. I've worked part-time as a waitress for multiple years and there have been occasions where I've had to pull my managers up on not serving, like, diet drinks or something, because I know it can be a massive issue to people with allergies. I got shouted at a few times but I know it's worth it.
However, having said that there are instances where customers will eat the breadsticks or order a beer and then when it comes to food will say that they're gluten free. Obviously you should always listen to dietary requirements, but that's frustrating because it makes some servers not trust what customers say more than anything.

    • @SelphieFairy

jen lewis Exactly. My mom has a really severe peanut/nut allergy and we went to this Italian restaurant. Italian food is normally pretty safe as they don’t use a lot of nut products but in one of the dishes she was looking to eat they cooked it with some type of hazelnut oil and you would have never thought of it otherwise

I worked as a waitress for a few months and I always looked up like 6 times if something is really gluten free, because of fear that I could kill someone.
One time I served a table and the lady was asking me if her plate is really gluten free. And I knew that it was the gluten free one, because they told me in the kitchen 3 seconds ago. But I sounded so unsure when I said it that she said I should check again.
I walked back to the kitchen and asked, even though I already knew it, but I didn't want to tell her: "Sorry, I know there is no gluten in it, I'm just a socially awkward waitress."

@Morgan Gresley obviously a customer should make the servers aware that they have an allergy, but it is the server's job to go and make sure the customer doesn't get any food that he/she is allergic to. The servers in this video said themselves that they were too lazy and straight up lied to the customers. Even if some of those customers are lying, it is certainly not worth the risk. A note on food allergies, because I see them being discussed a lot in the comments: I've been serving for three years and it drives me crazy to no end when my coworkers don't take restrictions seriously. *Allergies are way less fun for the people that have them than they are for you as a server to deal with for an hour, max.* I have three family members with Celiac Disease and two of them also have other serious food allergies. My step-brother was incapacitated for a very important college tryout because he ate something he was told didn't have gluten in it (but did) and therefore did not have a chance to get the scholarship he would've needed to attend that school. Lots of people say that those with allergies "just shouldn't eat out" but in a family of nine who are all living busy lives, that's almost impossible to do. Working in the food industry, when restrictions are concerned, it's not that hard to at least try to ask the kitchen what is in the food, and 9 times out of 10 if you really can't get a solid answer, someone with allergies will appreciate the attempt and go with a safer order, because you never know how severe the reaction could be. And by the way, actually caring about food allergies and treating a person who has them with respect almost *always* means a good tip. Put yourself in their shoes.

You would think things like mashed potatoes or scrambled eggs are Gluten free, but sometimes restaurants add something with Gluten in it to thicken the food or add some type of flavor. That’s why we ask! If someone served me something with Gluten in it, I would get so incredibly sick. But servers are still knowledgeable about the food at the restaurant and if she didn't know (especially since she was a trainee so she most likely wouldn't) she had the choice to ask and double check with the chef. My mother has celiacs disease, which if you didn’t know is when your immune system starts to destroy itself because you might have consumed wheat/gluten. It kind of bothers me to think that she could end up in the hospital because some waiter was to lazy to check the ingredients to make sure that a certain product/recipe doesn’t have gluten in it.. Many times you don’t know if a certain item on the menu has gluten in them.. kind of pisses me off tbh..

elisa serra it definitely sucks that people are going gluten free to be trendy, and servers feel like they can brush you off. Depending where you go, the chef may not know what has gluten and what doesn’t. Customers should call ahead of time to see if they have gluten free options. I would tell chefs, “hey this customer is allergic to shellfish. Please wash everything that’s touched any shelfish.” It’s up to them if they follow or not, I can’t just stand there and eye them down. Sueing doesn’t reverse what’s happened, but it may give the message of “hey. This is a serious matter. I’m not joking around” to the establishment and they can better train their staff to avoid it from happening to someone else.

The gluten free and vegan questions were disturbing to me, there are so many cases not just if people dying/getting sick because of the gluten issue (Why do you people have to get someone sick first before caring???) but there are often processing and allergy issues with certain types of meat, a lot of people will chose a vegan/gluten free option not just to be "healthy" but to literally not have an allergic reaction and risk being sick or y'know, dying.
Also what's up with the phrasing "Supposedly had a lot of allergies", bruh, do you think the vegan/gluten free options are the tastiest/preferred option? No, usually it's really really not.

Having worked in restaurants , the allergy thing I think is 50/50. Definitely know the product to the best of your ability for the customer but also, if you know you have a gluten allergy, be thoughtful of the restaurant. My mom has a deadly allergy to seafood so you won't see her in captain ds or red lobster.

    • @carligirrl
      @carligirrl Рік тому

I also work in restaurant and myself have allergies. Here's the thing, while with seafood it's clearer, things like dairy and gluten are a lot harder. Something a lot of people don't realize if things like salami often have dairy and things like bacon or soy sauce have gluten. And those are just a few examples. There are hundreds more. So while I agree both people need to pay attention, it's not always as simple as "I'm allergic to seafood so I won't go to Red Lobster."

The ignorance and willingness to potentially put a customer at risk is shocking. Diners don't necessarily know all of the ingredients that go into their food. Perfect example, who would expect that tomato soup is not vegan?! If you don't know the answer to a question, ask the chef! It's really easy.
I don't think ignorance is any sort of excuse to not have a basic level of respect for the customer. And I know the next argument that follows is that gluten free is just a fad that loads of people are jumping on. In that case, should people be expected to bring medical certificates or doctors notes to prove their medical condition in order to avoid being served food that would make them sick?

Vanessa Tsu sure, but as a server I’ve had to go back and ask if the meal contains the product. Sometime, the customers get upset even though you are trying to help them. It isn’t ignorant of the servers, especially if you have an allergy and don’t know anything about it. You should know what you can and can’t eat. For example, my cousin is allergic to sesame. You should what you can and can’t eat. Also if you aren’t sure nor is your server, just request everything without that ingredient. By the time your order reaches the cooks, they will tell you what contains sesame that they can’t take out. Also, if someone is being racist and saying derogatory terms against you, hell, most people would do something back.

I always go to such a huge effort for people with allergies/ intolerances, I really want to make sure that our restaurant caters for everyone. Sometimes it’s appreciated, sometimes I still get in trouble because the ONE THING on our menu that I can’t turn gluten-friendly is exactly what the customer wants :) also I have had people ask for a coeliac menu and I have seen the anger rise up in their eyes when I tell them that the same menu provided for everyone is is actually 100% coeliac-friendly (just replacing the bread with a gluten-free alternative). Some people just like to complain, some people do make up/ exaggerate conditions for attention (and you can always tell when, like when someone tells you they’re a really strict vegetarian and then you see them chomping away on the gelatine-laden dessert), but there are also a lot of perfectly lovely people with difficult conditions to live with that are always so grateful and thankful for that bit of extra care

My dad has Celiac. Just so you are aware, the MAIN ingredient in flour is wheat. Most times, even if it is a pizza restaurant, the restaurant will have gluten free options. For you to purposely mess up someone’s order that has celiac, or a gluten sensitivity is just down right wrong. If this were my dad, he would have to go to the hospital. Smh!

I wanna just say that I used to be a server for about 5 years, working at Four Seasons Resort, and a manager of a restaurant for 1 year, I've also been a bartender and have fallen in love with being a barista, but... I do my damn research... My job is to SELL you an item off my menu and present it to you in a way for you to enjoy an experience of "dining out"... It's called product knowledge! I studied my menus so that when someone came at me with difficult but sincere questions, I was able to provide an answer. Gluten Free, Vegan, Kosher, etc. are not to be taken lightly at all!! I have a "Spiel" for every item I sell at starbucks and you can bet that I know EXACTLY what goes in there because I make it, hell if the order is very specific and I know the person on bar will get confused, I'll make it myself just to make sure that person leaves happy... I can't believe this! These people have no work ethic from what I hear and I definitely would not want to work with them at all.

So I get angry when I hear about servers not paying attention or purposely messing up food. I think everyone should work restaurant once in their life since everyone visits restaurants so often. I don’t know if other restaurants do the same, but where I work, as the server I have to pay myself for any problems. This includes dropping food (I have to pay for the new food), when someone doesn’t like how their food came out, and any problem (real or not) the customer finds with their food. Remember that if you’re sending food back, someone’s going to pay for.
Also, I don’t know how other places are, but many servers get paid around $2.15 hourly. We really do rely on tips. Tipping us poorly because your food took long or for a mistake that the kitchen made isn’t fair.

In fact, you can even get screamed at by superior if you throw the food "just because it fell down" and the owners will pick them up themserlf to sell it. Here's the thing about gluten, if the restaurant does not have an separate kitchen/staff that doesn't come in contact with gluten then its impossible to eat out dued to cross contamination. This also can be applied to cooking at home and making sure your food/cooking equipment is free of contact of gluten particles. So on some scale you do consume an very small amount of gluten daily.

Spitting in food and eating left over food really isn't that bad as long as the person is not sick... But serving or eating food that was on a kitchen floor could be deadly. Just thinking of all the raw meat and fish juice, mold, rodent droppings and everything else that could be on the floor could literally kill someone. Everyone that works in a restaurant should be required to take ServSafe.

If you have celiac you should know that most restaurants are a risk because of the contamination factor regardless of what you order. There is a huge difference between celiac and being gluten free by choice and celiac is far too serious to risk it and eat in a restaurant that does not have a gluten free kitchen. To those saying that we should have more training UM I GET PAID $2 AN HOUR. Who is going to train me? I’m genuinely curious. I rely completely on customers to tip 20%

ruthleah erickson so I shouldn’t be allowed to eat out anymore because I have an autoimmune disease? Why don’t you just take the 5 extra minutes to properly prepare my food instead of being lazy?

Margaret Hempleman it's not the waiters job to prepare your food? It's the kitchens job and it's almost impossible to keep everything that desperately that foods don't touch each other or get cross contamination. I don't know how serious your disease is and how much is dangerous but it's not like they're trying to make it dangerous or difficult it's just not that easy and if you're high risk you gotta look out for yourself

Margaret Hempleman tbh I don't think you should, if you want a nice night out, bring your own food most restaurants should let you. As someone who has IBS and vegan, I've done this a lot of times with family and friends. The world doesn't adjust to you, you adjust to the world. Sorry nobody told you.

Margaret Hempleman It's not laziness. It's just not in the average restaurant's best interest to have a gluten free kitchen, without which it is very hard to eliminate cross contamination through utensils and equipment.
A restaurant is a business and you make up less than 1% of their clientele, it's not worth the money they would have to spend or the time they'd have to dedicate towards your specific meal.
However it is definitely worth it for you to play it safe and be completely aware of the risks you take if you choose to eat out.

My mom loves starting arguements with everyone so I have to remind her every time before she orders that I don’t wanna find a spooder in my food lol
