Yes you can I only did it this way because I needed to replace the shock. Just detach the A-arm and Slowly loosen the two bolts holding the shock in it will slip down. To put back on I used two ratchet straps to compress the spring then use a flat head screw driver to slide shock down to base od strut retightin two bolts on strut attach A-arm.
Bud you did not need to tear the quad down that far to change the shocks. I changed my kids struts still on the bike in 2 hours.
