I wonder just how saturated engineering will become in the future, I mean we should be thanking colleges for persuading students to follow their passion because if everybody was rational and realistic many smart students would pick a major for the job market like engineering. Which would result in extreme competition.
I agree. My viewpoint has changed a little bit since this video was made. I am actually skeptical of the popular claim by 'experts' that fields like Math, Science, Medicine etc. do not have enough people going into them. Because if everyone heeded their advice, then the opposite problem would occur etc. -- noone with any 'liberal arts' skills.

Humanities are vital for a democratic society. The decline in prosperity is due to the government funding stem fields and disregarding humanities as being a waste of time creating a political climate that is a shitshow. I understand having knowledge that is "applicable" like finance, but do a little of both!!
I am double majoring in economics and philosophy (starting senior year in the fall). Success in our current economy will be dependent in individuals to adapt.
2:55 yeah, exactly. I started out as a philosophy major and I have taken several humanities classes. I have never studied for a humanities test longer than maybe 2 hours, tops. I decided 3 semesters ago that I wanted to do a physics major instead. Complete 180 flip. I am taking 12+ credits of purely STEM classes now, my GPA is still 4.0, to give myself credit I believe I am a good student with a sound mind, but still, the workload is drastically different. I have single homework assignments alone that take upwards of 4 to 5 hours. It is standard among the A students to study for 15 hours or more for a single test. The two degrees are completely different in terms of demand, and believe it or not, math and physics tests your mind's imagination and logic more than any humanities class I ever took. I think what humanities classes really excel in is critical thinking, particularly when it comes to social topics, and broadly, the human condition. I am well into my Physics degree now, and next semester I will be taking my first humanities class in over a year (philosophy of religion), and I must say, it feels like I am being let out for recess.
Absolutetly. Early in my college career I deluded myself that I would be premed. I was not cut out for it. I ended up getting a double major in Psychology and Philosophy, and a minor in english (actually could have declared that as my third major). Even with triple the normal courseload of a humanities student, I still had tons of time to research my own interests, work several jobs and have hobbies. So yes, the workload of math and science is way more than what humanities demands, although I find humanities way more interesting and fun.

the truth is that in this age in time, you can learn anything on the internet if u have the will. We can learn any language or liberal arts, we can learn coding or physichs. Also, i think about 50% of the best jobs worldwide could be aquired based on your skill and not your diploma.
These days employers are looking for skills, but its the degree that allows you to get a job in that field in the first place and then work your way up

@jaden watson Then I suggest you sacrifice your hobbies like watching Television or playing Video Games, it just might be better for you because let's face it, watching Television and playing Video Games is a waste of time. I'd much rather learn an educational subject, even if it's a subject like Philosophy. Get your priorities straight.

Then why major in it? If you're not going to use for a job then its a waste of money and time. You can learn philosophy by yourself, so do a major that allows you to get a job and study it in your free time
I beg to differ. There are loads of lectures on UA-cam alone, not to mention the full online courses that you can take for a small fee. You can attend any sort of live shows like book signings or just entertainment talks. You can also buy dozens of books from real philosophers and absorb their actual words without some teacher dictating what they think it means. Plus you can also try to find a local group in your area that meet up to discuss the topic, there are really multiple ways to learn this subject outside of university.
University isn't the only place you'll find great thinkers, in fact, its more likely that university is the place you'll find people teaching the works of great thinkers.
It's not necessarily terrible for job prospects, mind you. As a major it gives you critical thinking, logic, speaking, and writing skills to name a few. It also depends what else you do while in college.
If you are passionate about the field, do not let anyone deter you from majoring in it. Everybody will not have the same outcome when majoring in philosophy. I can say that with this major just like other liberal majors you may want to consider a masters.

If you don't want to become a teacher of philosophy, avoid it. Study philosophy in your own time from the internet or cheap/free books from amazon, book sales, libraries, etc. You don't need to take a $20k college course to have a good philosophical background. Simply look up a college syllabus or a layout of general philosophy concepts and just start reading, looking things up to get a better understanding of them if you're confused.

Did I say that? I know from my Greek phil course that Socrates didn't actually write anything down and much of his philosophy was retold thru Plato.
How many hours a week would you put into your studies when you were taking a semester loaded with the majority of philosophy courses?
Sometimes barely any, other times several hours (maybe 10+ hours a week during finals week). It all depends on the workload at the time and if I had papers due. There were usually 3-5 papers per class.
I love the premise of the video - 'should I study philosophy' - hmmm...let's look at this logically - mebbe i need to take a course in logic...hmmm - ;)

I actually began my philosophy study in college as an atheist and now believe in God. I wouldn't contribute it wholly to my study of philosophy but it definitely contributed. I would not describe myself as particularly 'religious' however.
philosophy has no correlation to theism or atheism. So its up to you how much it will impact you

You can still get a decent job with a philosophy degree, depending on what else you do. Internships etc.
