his thoughts on street photographers profiting off of marginalized communities is one of the greatest opinions I've heard when it comes to this style of work. This is one of the realest and most authentic Walkie Talkie's to-date IMO. I also like his non-intrusive style and his huge emphasis on consent because while the abrasive and confrontational style works amazingly, this is the kind of work that I would rather see because it comes from a place of comfort and even a level of trust to an extent.
No its not
natbrown, at least at some depth to your comment, no1 agrees with you.
Marginalized communities have bigger problems than people snapping pictures of them.
I agree with him if people (photographers) are just coming in to exploit a community. But it also felt somewhat assuming that all outsiders are just trying to make a buck off of other people. Some people just like to explore different neighborhoods and cultures for the sake of exploring different neighborhoods and cultures.
It's really not. A photographer is just an observer. Making money from ones job is a given. Without the photographer other people wouldn't be exposed to that part of the world and see it's beauty or it's problems. Do you feel the same about a war photographer? They mostly take photos of peoples suffering, death and destruction.... but without them we couldnt even imagine the pain other people are going through. Also.... documenting history should never be discouraged in anyway and the photographer should be justly compensated for it.
Daniel is the real deal. Respectful, creative, and interested in people's lives. Best to him and his photography career!
Only a couple minutes in to this one so far but I immediately really like his humanistic approach and letting the subjects have a say in their participation.
it’s is truly so freaking awesome to find a visual anthropologist featured here. that’s my kin! beyond that, 5:33, ethics and consent aren’t spoken about online as much as they should be. and to take that further into a critique of how money flows in photographic art spaces is _chef’s kiss_ - this is the creative community i’m looking for in photography and i hope i find more people who think-feel like this in my local context.
Kinda sad this isn't getting much views because this is easily one of my favorite episodes. I really learned from this.
Ma, Daniel's energy is so relaxed and positive, his approach to different people and handling an ask then the rejection is something everyone can learn from
I can see this man is passionate about his community and respectful of others. New fan here
one of the bests so far. love how he wants people to feel the love and appreciation that he shows them by taking those split second images and actually see their lives and who they are. not only empty images.
Im only 2:25 in and i was already moved to make a comment, Daniel's approach is such a vibe, Pour into the community, have an interaction, give a compliment, give and receive equally but, don't be pressed if you don't get back. Gee wiz, this is why i love the series and the messages given in these.
Manipulation at its finest
i truly love pictures that are snapped without asking permission, it’s more real life on the go( like everyone is busy and doing their own thing without the feeling that someone’s watching so they have to pose) it’s free flowing. but this style of asking permission, brings out their personality almost like family 👏🏽 no matter what good work 😁💪🏾
Dude has so much good vibes coming out of him. It shows in every portrait he takes.
Love his thoughts about ethics in regards to making work in marginalized communities. I completely agree with consent as well.
The interaction around 6:15 with the woman is how I handle making work with strangers. I understand “normal” street photography but it’s never sat right with me to just go out and start photographing people without consent, regardless of if they’re in a public space or not.
Never stop making these. They make me THINK instead of making me want to buy the next piece of gear. 🖤
But how do you get CANDID photos? Those are my personal favorite, and the only way to get them is when someone doesn't know they're being photographed.
@@ams914 candid photography also hits different for me. something about capturing the unfiltered emotions of the moment. but in the country I'm in photographing people without their consent is illegal so I have to ask for consent and it's never quite the result I'm looking for. In the US it's perfectly legal so just get out there and do it I guess...
What a great episode, I could hang out and listen to Daniel all day! Would love to see a return visit with him in another 6-12 months to catch up on more of his work!
My favorite episode so far. He is the real deal. I love his approach to street photography and life in general.
“I don’t have to walk away with a photo" This guy is straight up enlightened.
He is very respectful of people. I like his view of ethics and consent. I like he doesn't take rejection personal. Thats the way we all as photographers should be. First time here and love it.
2 minutes in, I absolutely adore Daniel, what an incredible person
Lvl 99 orator. Someone get this man a podcast
The gold standard undisputed heavyweight king of "Talkography" strikes again
This made me laugh haha. Made me think of street photography as an RPG. Thanks for the support Zess!
Really fascinating to hear someone talk about working within communities in a way that gives back to them, and touch on how being a part of a community affords you that access. It's especially interesting as someone living in a foreign country, every time I speak I'm clearly an outsider, so I often think about how that affects my photos and how people perceive me.
Really love this series you have going here. Discovering new photographers today is usually done 99% on a screen. You see their work, you hit like and move on. This series really allows you to get to know their motive. Super engaging man. Also, just to help you out if no one mentioned, the audio was acting quite weird throughout. Thanks brotha.
I came for the photography, I stayed for the energy 🙏
What an incredibly thoughtful man. I love his process as a “Visual Anthropologist”… so inspiring.
Also, shout out to Mount Vernon! I lived there while I was in college in Westchester - it’s a great area ❤
This is brilliant. As someone who grew up in this neighborhood it brings back all the feelings.
Definitely would love to walk around the Bronx with him. Great attitude and great images.
We need more Daniel's in this world.
him asking to take photos, getting turned down, and continuing on with his great, positive energy is awesome.
everyone loves daniel, he is so chill
I just had a great convo with Daniel a little over a week ago, and that was our first time meeting. He saw me photographing a candid moment in Williamsburg and he stopped to chat with me and we had a great chat about consent vs. candid, particularly when it comes to street photography. Personally, I don't think there is a right or wrong way of doing photography (as long as the intentions are good) but the conversations are important.
Can't wait to wind it back and reconnect! I feel our conversation was the start of my own learning, to explore and understand the nuance in being apart of these spaces and documenting with layers between self and the "subject" intact. Me talking to you was actually me also seeking to learn about a process outside my own
Daniel Emuna - you are pure class all the way. Thank you for existing and sharing your insights with us all.
"your body of work is a documentation of your own personal journey" I love this interview and photographer, thank you both very much!!!
What a lovely bloke. Great to see someone with so much positive energy
thoroughly enjoyed this. this is exactly what i mean when i say the work you make needs to be in alignment with who you are as a person. you can't be someone you're not and you can tell the work daniel is making is exactly who he is deep down.
So different than all the other walkies. What an amazing guy. All love.
what I love about these videos is that literally each one makes me reconsider an aspect of my own approach. This one especially is so good
I don’t think I’ve ever been more fascinated hearing a photographer talk
What a calm soul he is. There is respect in every step he takes throughout the community.
God bless this man, and thank you Paulie for taking time to shoot and edit these walkie-talkies. They are truly motivating.
Much love from Florida
One of your best walks...Great commentary. The model was amazing. Awesome!
He is a really humble man, and i like the idea of visual anthropology and how respectful he is.
Not wanting to disrespect him, but he really can't compose a photo. That being said, i stil watched it 'till the end because he is such a nice guy!
one of my best friends would always say that haha, I have a lot to learn
@danielemuna it’s more about capturing the communities you live than the image in its self, keep humble man really enjoyed the video
He is a poet. Words just flow. Beautiful
I respect his humility in dealing with people. 100% the right approach in my opinion.
This guy is a gentleman. Daniel Emuna rocks!
Sweet addition showing Daniel who has with a refreshingly contrasting mantra alongside many of the other walkie talker SPs you've featured. Nice one Paulie
I like how Daniel says, "Make a photo of you" instead of "take". His focus on connection over the result is refreshing and important :)
Thank you Daniel for highlighting intentionality in photography. I believe that it's the story which brings photographs from good to great! Paulie, thank you for highlighting these photographers throughout the Walkie series! Much love.
Loved this, Daniel is such a lovely guy. Really impressed with the way he deals with his art. Great video!👍🇦🇺🇬🇧😎
Wow, so far my favorite episode. I’ve been binge watching these for the last few days and this one is special. Love it
what a sweet man, i just love hearing him speak
This dude floats and Im down for floating along with him hearing his thoughts on life and photography. Very nice.
I'm discovering so many photographers on your UA-cam channel... Thanks for that. I like this man. His photography philosophy is great and is quite close to mine.
More of this energy in the world please, so refreshing
Minutes in and I know this episode is good and filled with rich thoughts.
Hell yeah!! This resonates with me so strongly. I like to flow between taking candid shots and interacting with people on the streets. So nice to see a great example of someone documenting his community in such a beautiful way 💙.
Can we please have more people like Daniel walking around this earth?! He is so well spoken and seems to genuinely be a nice person. People like him make this place better! Great interview Paulie! Keep up the good work.
What an equanimous person. He himself is a body of work. Adore him. Beautiful episode.
☮
I didn’t think I’d vibe with him but I REALLY love his vibe and work!
I’m so in love with Daniel’s perspective and approaches with people. This is so instructive. Also Dawoud Bey. Yes 👍
This guy's really inspired me! Thank you! I've been scared of street photography because I thought it had to be candid but I was never comfortable with the lack of consent. This guy leans into consent and engagement and exchange which fits more within my values and comfort. Amazing video!
Love. This. Thank you for highlighting the importance of connection. ❤❤❤
Great video again.
Interesting guy, love his philosophy, food for thoughts.
Thanks for sharing !
This channel has inspired me. Thank you for these walkie talkie vlogs. Just discovered them yesterday and a few episodes in inspired me to walk downtown chicago and just start taking photos again.
Love! This! Love him! Love his work!
Best walkie talkie thus far! So genuine!
Very articulate and loved hearing his philosophical view of photography. Fire for sure.
We need more Daniels in this world.
Great content, again. Nice guy, nice attitude on photography. Damn, I love this Walkie Talkie series. It's the best! Keep up the good work, Paulie!
I love this guy! He is so easy going and kind! Such an inspiration for street photography.
Nice change of pace with this one.
it’s always dope seeing people just like me out there doing it, best one yet, keep it up paulie
As an introvert his approach terrifies me but it’s so refreshing, definitely an approach that I’ll try.
I almost prefer this approach to one where I don't ask for permission. it's way less likely to end up in a confrontation
This is my favorite walkie talkie! Love this!
That guy is so beautiful and he's so passionate about knowing and connecting with communities and I am here for it ! cheers bro, keep creating art
Great video ! Daniel is so spiritual. I like his mood and vibe :)
Wow, I learned so much during this video. Daniel is an awesome guy and great photographer.
The most REAL interview iv seen on here so far! Hella relate, refreshing on so many topics that need to be said more. Especially being a Black photographer, RESPECT Daniel!
Tons of good vibes in Walkie-talkies. I feel better person doing street now.
Ayeee shouted out Flordalis 👏
We grew up near each other in the Bronx. I'm a photographer as well, but just digital for now.
Such a good episode, love Daniel’s approach and thoughtfulness.
Such a vibe. Thanks for sharing his story.
Rocking the canon 40mm with speed booster. Love this setup with Fuji cameras. Nice!
Love this interview! He’s so smart and sweet and respectful. I also 💯 agree with your work is a reflection of your personal journey and that a photo will happen when it happens. Great work!
This guy is so chill and I love his politic around photography. I can't rock with people like Trevor Wisecup lmao.
I love Daniel's views on photography and life
I clicked to check out some work made in the Bronx, and stayed to learn humanity from a fellow photog. ✌
I like his approach towards people he's a kind soul , respect. Great work too !
Love Daniel's approach and authenticity 👏 Love how you put this video together! Great Walkie Talkie :)
One of the Best one yet. Lovely guy.
This is great, really shows the process.
Has a great postive attitude and that shows through in his photography and relations to his subjects.
So hype for this video! I’ve been waiting for Daniel’s walkie talkie episode 😊
Aww haha - who is this? 👀

As a naturally shy person and photographer, the aspect of street photography just taking pictures of oblivious strangers just rubs me the wrong way. I really appreciate this brothers style and grace and his rare mentality in this style of photography to get the consent and CREATE a photo and not just “shoot” strangers.
I really appreciate his discussion of consent and ethics. Very thoughtful video.
What an inspiring man. Big respect. Thanks for making such a great film.
Love this brother's vibe and awareness. Thanks for sharing.
I will add to the chorus - What a great human. being We all need a little bit more of his additude. So glad I watched this.
Awesome to watch. I lived right there on Rochambeau around the corner until last year. I actually shot a movie all around that neighborhood during the pandemic. Great to see this. Awesome video. Thanks for sharing.
I really like this. When I first started shooting I really had trouble not getting involved with what I was filming (being on a small farm, you always have a natural urge to lend a hand). Understanding when to document and when to be more involved takes experience!
A very interesting and intelligent young photographer ❤ he's going places!
a really powerful episode
One of my of favorite episodes!
