It's the age old question. How are black characters treated in dragon ball? Going through the history of anime characters that are black or black anime characters is a testing subject. Throughout the years, the designs were exaggerated. But what about today? Dragon Ball Super Chapter 88 makes a huge change in the dragon ball fandom forever. Qaaman discusses the history of black characters in dragon ball today.
Piccolo will always be the black warrior on the dragon team
I am Qaaman and I approve this message.

Isn't he from the Warrior clan?

There are approximately 25,000 "black" people living in Japan (maximum and about .02% of population 1/5000 people). By comparison, there is a higher percentage of Amish living in the US (.07% of population). The fact that there are so many black characters to talk about to begin with in the Dragon Ball series is nothing short of statistically amazing. Its funny because people talk about things they don't understand, for example in the US as an example you see an "inclusive cast" of a show to be approximately equal numbers of all ethnicities and sexualities. Even with all of the extremely skewed data to portray a certain narrative a diverse cast would really look like this in the US specifically: 7 straight white people (mix of men and women), 1 straight black person, 1 straight latino, and 1 mixed race bisexual (at the most). Yet if you watch commercials or shows that are made in the US today as an outsider, you would assume that there are as many if not more black people specifically when black people don't even outnumber hispanics in the US. Just check the census data, there are so many references lol. In summary: In japan there are basically no black people to speak of, and in America black people are now statistically being over included in media... I/we care because this country is just as much ours as yours... It matters... Love your videos, always have, and I never thought I would leave a comment like this on a Dragon Ball video lol. And yes, i watched to the end...
Right but Toriyama and Japan are both very aware of black people in America media. American media influences Japan now right?
@@QaamansLand American media (and western media in general) has been influencing Japan as a whole since WWII. Although I'm not quite sure what was meant or the nature of your comment. Not quite sure if we agree or disagree lol. The following 2 paragraphs straight from wikipedia.
In the post-war years, Japanese media was often influenced by the United States,[9] leading some to define anime as any animation emanating from Japan after 1945.[26]: 5 While anime and manga began to flourish in the 1940s and 1950s, with foreign films (and layouts by American cartoonists),[27] influencing people such as Osamu Tezuka,[28]
In the 1950s, anime studios began appearing across Japan. Hiroshi Takahata bought a studio named Japan Animated Films in 1948, renaming it Tōei Dōga,[15] with an ambition to become "the Disney of the East." While there, Takahata met other animators[29] such as Yasuji Mori, who directed Doodling Kitty, in May 1957. However, for the Japanese public, it wasn't until the release of Panda and the Magic Serpent in October 1958 that Japan fully entered into world of professional animation.[13] While animators began to experiment with their own styles, using Western techniques,[24] Tezuka Osamu began drawing shonen manga[30] like Rob no Kishi (Knight of the Ribbon), which later became Princess Knight, trying to appeal to female readers, while also pioneering shoujo manga.

One minor mistake but Popo was actually black in the Nicktoons version of Kai. It was the CW4kids dub that made him blue.
I heard that many people were offended by black Mr. Popo. That was why they made him blue.
As a young black man myself, seeing the over exaggerated features of the older black characters at the beginning of this video made me bust out laughing because damn…. Toriyama ain’t have to do us black people like that 😂 I’m someone who can look at stuff like that and laugh because as long as it’s not either hateful or directed specifically at me, I know how to find humor when it comes to stereotype jokes

It was in all his works throughout the 80’s-90’s period, one of the few stains on his work.
There were more normal depictions in other anime like Macross from 1982.

Art imitates life. There are individuals who fit the way characters are depicted. The reason we are able to easily identify the stereotypes is because there are people like that who exist. Furthermore, we have to be mindful of the times. In 20 years, we might shame our current selves for watching shows with rampant violence. Shonen is largely about characters assaulting each other. If we take offense to everything, at what point does it stop?

What would be your version if Chi-Chi continued her training and became a Z-Fighter?
Can't deny that Mr Pop looks identical to the black face caricature but I think he was more so meant to convey the image of an alien since we have Staff Officer Black who definitely followed the caricature with the lips and eyes but was less extreme than Mr Popo with the tooth & darker tone, which Killa also followed design-wise.
But as for being up to date the manga definitely is but even in Super Hero with the RR Army flashback in the beginning Staff Officer Black still had the comical big lips. That just might be a case of emulating the artstyle over implications but idk.
What about Jynx?
@@QaamansLand Jinx I'd say is in the same case where the intention was alien but after feedback of how it was regarded in the west, was amended.
You chatting shyt, Japanese think blacks are funny and they don't care about blacks...
Mr Popo is a Genie, who says that he is the only 1 that looks like that, i personally always presumed all genies in DBZ looked like that although with diff colour pallets.
Android 15 is more purple than black/brown though. Although i member mostly the Big Green dub stuff from him, he came more off as a alcohol type.
Staff Officer Black is still a smart and capable guy, hence why many many ppl didn't have much problems with him untill las couple years ago by ppl who r not DBZ fans.
Jynx is based of a Yokai that predates blackface by years, she isn't connected 1 Mr Popo, their origins lies elsewhere.
Early DB is pretty much a lot gag as well and Akira is a big fan like 'pulling the rug from under you' aka subverting what the reader expects. How many ppl (who r not DBZ fans) think how Staff Officer Black is vs how he actually is in the end, as he looks big and muscular as well, so many ppl 1st think he is a dumb strength character, but than he shows he is pretty smart.
I did think when i was younger that Killa was Staff Officer Black's younger brother.
I am a bit confused what mean with Staff Officer Black's eyes, as they don't look that diff many other DBZ characters.
On Uub, i saw him as a middle Eastern character.
I do say i look from a European lense. But variety how characters look is a good thing.
What can be annoying with some DBZ fans that they want Piccolo 2 be black so much that they warp how DBZ is and get offended when someone that Piccolo is a green alien, because they have need that there MUST be a black character as part of main group in show. I have never understood that, i always prefer well written characters, i don't care much if someone is black, white, Asian, gay, straight, bi, autistic, whatever with it or not. Either aliens evolved diff from humans anyway, who can all look diff from humans. The need of forcing a character (because of (forced) diversity reasons) into a show can create or bland characters or stereotype as well (something both Marvel and DC have that problem atm). Not much of problem seeing Piccolo as "black", as that is how i (jokingly) see him as well.
I am bi, and didn't have much have a problem on how General Blue was depicted, most the time, as it was mostly for gags and jokes should be allowed. But that think with Obotchaman is a bit that i less liked, especially because we didn't have much more gay/bi men in show beside the guy that Trunks fought (1 that i didn't have much problems with because gag, alhtough Goten would've been funnier especially going by that Goten is made into a ladies man in GT), but he is there so little.
Wonder what think of Uganda Knuckles, especially that ppl from Uganda love the character.
Wonder what see Goku and Vegeta as, white or Asian, same with some of the other DBZ characters.
You forgot King Chappa from the classic Dragon Ball. He appears in 2 tournaments if I'm not mistaken
King Chappa was probably the only character not over exaggerated.
Everyone seems to forget there was a scene in Dragonball Superhero where one of Pan's daycare teachers was also a black lady who looked appropriately designed and acted normally! She was only in the movie for a brief scene but I just thought I'd point that one out too.
To be honest? I totally forgot about her...

Avdol is an Egyptian guy and he’s actually the first person we see using the ability called “stands” in the series which is basically like personas if you’ve played those games. The author, Araki addresses racism in his stories and is very much against it, probably because he’s traveled the world and actually talked to black people before. He was way ahead of his time in terms of portraying that type of stuff and also portraying other things such as gay people and strong female characters who also have flaws. Even the black villains are pretty normal and aren’t portrayed stereotypically.

Qaaman what's your opinion on Belmod's voice actor? When I first heard the English dub I was surprised that he was portraying a distinct African American voice. That for me was the wake realisation that their arnt many back characters or voices throughout dragon ball then looking back it's now obvious Popo and that are based on older depictions of black people.
Hate it and privately ranted to others on discord about it years ago.
UUB is an aboriginal for those who don't know what Qaaman is talking about
Ok, I might elaborate a few interpretations about this.
First, the relevance of this for the Dragon ball franchise. This topic is not much of a thing because the bizarre and exaggerated depictions, one way or another, do not establish a social commentary. Toriyama is not known for his input or trends against racial and ethnical groups, reason to assume it was not meant to illustrate the real author's view of these groups. Thought, some of his jokes seem like products of the time at some instances.
Second, considering the ratio of characters in Dragon Ball, which are black, it is incorrect to rush to the assumption the looks of this few characters implies the general look of all black characters inside the franchise.
Third, there is a question to identify in the matter of how we feel over these looks. Like, are we assuming the problem is the lack of realism or the actual appearance of the characters? When we focus in answering the question, it might be considerable that:
The purpose and achievements of this anime aren't linked to the realism it establish. Dragon ball is at its center a fictional, develop like a comedy, sci-fiction and mystical tale.
The anime, is particular with the visual. However, the cartoonish traits don't invite us to judge the looks for better or worse, like we are not being lead to discriminate groups in real life with even slight similarities.
Fourth, it actually is great to have more diverse in designs for every kind of character. Thought, the idea of them looking more like other main characters doesn't imply that's a normalization in real standards. After all, anime looks are far from real looks, anyways.
The point, while it might had been doll and overused way of depicting communities, which is why having more variation is great. It must be for sure mention is not a change because of the franchise being less racist, as it was not trying to be from the beginning.
This is also a topic, I think might be more noticeable and debatable in regards to Japan's old art media. Contextually, there were, more of general idea here, a dramatic reaction from most of Japan against certain groups at the times, which was the reason for social depictions and ideas that are outdated nowdays. Like, this is not a light topic, and not a reason to make assumptions of Japan's society. The causes and such, are still debatable and the consequences are somehow understandable from certain points of view (Thus, why it's so interesting as a topic.)
What a country can more then one heritage, culture, etc. Gtf outta here
Mr pope isn't black his a Jinn 😂
Mr. Pope is based on Arab culture. I seen Toriyama's original design sheet for the character and one design had Mr. Pope looking like a old Arab guy. General Black is the real offensive design in DragonBall. Of course there are more anti-black caricatures in the background like at tournaments.
Mr. Popo could be a depiction of an African Muslim. Namekians could be based on African Muslims too -- The Namekians are all bald, they wear Muslim-looking garments, they speak to a wise elder and they have African-sounding names like Dende. Planet Namek could also be a reference to Africa. Also, one Namekian character even has the stereotypical lips.
It's not the world moving In a positive direction,it's Japan. Obviously because of their geographical location black people aren't that common so they wouldn't really have anyone to tell them they exadurated features might be offensive.
b. p. have "exaggerated features" compared to other races. the cartoonists aren't make anything up. what you guys call a accurate depiction is drawing w. features and painting them brown. In your minds we need to deny reality in order not to be ray cysts.

@@QaamansLand in terms of, he never made the content you make, therefore you are not copying him. That's what I mean, there is no disrespect qaaman lol!
Lol
Naruto been doing their thang
Finally. Now I won't get asked if I'm Mr popo on the street anymore 🥲
It's my understanding that Mr. Popo was blue because people got offended. I never Mr. Popo as "blackface". I saw it as the way he was design and people who were offended are overreacting to it. Especially since people seem to get offended on behalf of people who are not offended. I'm from Arkansas. Arkansans are basically stereotyped to be hillbillies. I'm surprised the Beverly Hillbillies were from Texas rather than Arkansas. Whenever you see a hillbilly cartoon, the hillbilly is from Arkansas. Maybe some Arkansans are offended by that. But I'm not. The same could apply to Mr. Popo's design being racist. Maybe some black people are offended while other black people are fine with it. I would bet anything that the vast majority of people offended by "blackface" Mr. Popo are not even black.
I never noticed an Aboriginal inspiration with uub, that's actually an interesting thought.
I'm Australian myself and grew up in a town that had a strong Aboriginal connection so i can sort of see a connection.
If you made a video on this I would be highly interested in hearing what your thoughts are.
I will and I have had this video planned since 2015
@@QaamansLand can't wait
super had a timeskip?
Yes
As much as I respect the series, I feel it was pretty racist to stereotype these features of a black person. These characters looked like clowns and it's sad that toriyama saw black people this way.
Actually Mr. Popo was blue in the 4 kids
What's funny was I was gonna suggest something like this in your last video but I was just too lazy too
Always feel free to add topics.
Honorary mention to the heaters. They're basically Jamaican aliens
Umm? More like Predators...
@@QaamansLand I see what you did there.
@@rwchitown5570 Specifically from the predator franchise. When Gas goes berserk he looks just like them
@@QaamansLand No one has ever mentioned this
Dragon ball always been Racist, Frieza for example…
vegeta knows that mr popo gives bulma the bbc because mr popo is the top food chain while piccolo is known as the "penetrator" since we all know that gohan is generically a namekian wearing human skin
Ummm...
@@QaamansLand Yeah how do you respond to that?? 😂💀
Popo is based on Djinn, not any dark skinned human race.
Future Trunks: Dont shoot! This man isnt Black!
PS.: Oob is from New Zealand
There is no country in Dragon ball, Dragon ball itself os one country
@@Eric6761 That may be true, but Planet Namek could be a reference to an African country like Sudan. Namekians share a lot of similarities with African Muslims and it might not be a coincidence.
I'm happy you uploaded this video👏🏽
Reason?
0:18 mr popo was stealing bulma's soul and spiting it back into her body with the power of his black genie ki that only he has and anime only.
This isn't a new thing outside of dragon ball. That racial stereotypical style stems from Japanese animators imitating old American cartoons. That offense style is an American design. It was imitated out of ignorance. There generally wasn't mallace behind it.
Did you notice that I mentioned other anime characters or you didn't watch the video yet?
@@QaamansLand I did notice. I'm just speaking very broadly. This has all been going on for a long time. I think it's been more out of ignorance than any mallace. That's my main point.
@@gamingguru2k6 Your comment made it seem like you directly took a shot at me. Great name btw.
Uub is aborigine
You understood what I meant huh? When I said Australian?
@@QaamansLand of course. That’s really what most of us are but they hide it from us
Black people were correctly portrayed in dbz
Wtf
You're a fool
The black characters from anime that you mentioned are way more relevant than these dragon ball super characters though
mr popo's true form is mr hankey the christmas poo
👍🏾 a really good video
Japanese racism is cute compared to usa racist
0:38 piccolo pretty much looks at that drivers license instructor and remembering how glad he was that chi chi pleasure his antennas while dressing him up as ken doll playing reverse basketball
0:05 he's straight outta t rex compton and wants to prove that he isnt about that thug life because he wants mr hankey the christmas poo to get him a 10 speed
Popo is clearly a Genie....... where are people getting that he is an alien?
So why doesn't he grant wishes? And why was it never stated that he is a genie? Was it stated in the Manga?
He's clearly a minstrel style depiction of an African Muslim.
Mr polo kinda look like a black face character
"Kinda"?
