There is a huge difference. In short, a product manager owns the product from business POV, an engineering manager owns the product from you guessed it development and engineering POV.
1. Software developer VS Engineering Manager - Honest talk Is not applicable for all company. If you are working in Product based then it will be different and if you are in Service based then it will be different and if you are working in Startup then it will be different. if you are working in FAANG or MAANG then it will be different. 2. Some company has many level in Engineering Manager itself similar to Software Developers levels. So Engineering manager is not a boss role. 3. To be successful in terms of Engineering Manager then you should think yourself as Software Developer and an individual contributor. If you think you are boss then you will start to fall and screw up things. 4.I have seen and have experience where engineering manager come from Non Technical domain with people management experience alone and screw up things. So i prefer a engineering manager should be a coder or developer in his previous experience and he should never stop coding until he become boss of the company.
hahha been waiting for this one! btw i took a few notes from your previous video & it seems some factors that you said are necessary for career growth beyond sde2 are (correct me if i'm wrong): - i can design systems (hld & lld both) - i have previously owned entire systems and implemented them from scratch & they have had a major impact - i have written test cases & design docs - mentoring other devs is it necessary to know concepts like concurrency/multithreading etc also? some companies like Uber ask questions on these topics in interviews frequently - i know what they are but i don't use them at work at all so i'm not sure if i should be spending more time on dsa or on these concepts since I'm nodejs fullstack, equally skilled at both ui/api design but these topics are core backend concepts. right now trying to switch my job and get sde2 at a good company with decent exposure but brushing up dsa itself is a big task for me not sure if i have the time to also read Concurrency in Java cover to cover. please share your thoughts and congrats on the SDM role once again! wish you all the best.
You have nailed down quite a few points here. Multi threading and concurrency can be important mainly dependent on the type of application one is dealing with tbh.

i like your videos currently i am intern in unicorn from past 4 months and also has full time offer at that unicorn but i have to regularly has to do work mon-friday 10-7 and i kind of feel like trapped in cage and also i don't think i can have multiple income source , also i am not able to decide whether i like software engineering or not because when ever i am alloted development work i like it but when given work which has vague problem description and need to ask lot of question or need to solve multiple bugs in different services , then i don't like it becasuse i have to depend on others for work and constantly ask many question. also biggest question is job security after 5-10 years

Bhai justification ki kya baat hai. Role switch is a two way door decision. Kabhi bhi switch back kar sakte. Koi bhi issue nai hai. I am so sorry for you, ki tumko achche managers nai mile. But kisi bhi decent company me kisi tech manager ko yeh saare kaam karne padhte hai. Which is very very exciting. Bachcho ko follow karna band karo, aur tech leaders ko follow karoge LinkedIn me to pata lag jayega kya bol rha hu. If you do want to grow in the field then this attitude will not help.
