Let me know! 1 single performance turbo or two??
Great video man and I think you should do compounds because they spool faster so they give you power faster.
I would go single
I would run compound turbos
Compound for sure!
Good point
I still say pull the engine and drivetrain and slam it in a clean square body
Agreed! If you gotta put that much time and energy into it it would be about the same and wouldn’t be stuck with a dodge 😝
Definitely replace the cab, I would if it were mine.....
I would just replace the cab. It will be a way less headache. And you will be happier in the end. Knowing the cab is truly rust free and not all patched up and stuff.
Good point
I know what’s it’s like to have a truck for a long time in the family. I bought my grandpas Lb7 that he bought brand new in 2003, love that truck.
Your time and truck do what you want and not what everyone wants two long straps 1 two ton chain falls 3 2" pipes that will be long enough to go through 4 rafters make a upside down teepee in the center put a small strap and those chain falls two straps through cab and pick it up remember place pipes in a location where rafters are reinforced the upright
When your looking for a cab make sure it’s from a truck that has a Diesel engine that was in the frame etc bc of the firewall is different between that and one with. Gas engine
Very good point
A non diesel cab will work just fine, I have 1500 cab on mine and everything works perfectly
I agree. Replace the cab. There are plenty of dead Cummins around here in yards in Florida that might be a little musty, but don't have the rust issues. Trying to get rid of rust is an issue that... Snowballs, haha
I just did my 98 this summer. You can get brand new fenders for about 130 to 140 a piece. You have to be careful because there are people trying to sell used ones for more than that. Same with tail gate. I got a new one for 145 and there where people on youtube selling used ones for more than that.
I feel like I always say this when you show rusty trucks but here in the UP we have trucks that are way more rusted out than that and people get good money selling them too. It’s crazy.
I lived in the up for 4 years now and my lbz is just getting worse gotta love all that salt!
If I was you I would build a clean truck. what I mean is no huge Lift or crazy HP numbers (keep it around 450-500) and then use this truck as your daily driver/tow rig and save the wear and tear off your LBZ. Install a nice suspension that doesn't compromise your towing and keep it kinda stock looking.
You know Josh, the whole deal with you choosing to do a different cab, I think all that matters is what you want to do. What you think is best for the build. Yeah sucks taking the cab away for family value, but no matter what I know you guys will make that pickup absolutely stunning again!! Can’t wait to see this build come back to life!!!!
Thanks Sean
@@TruckMaster absolutely man!!
Pulling the cab is the only logical thing, so ur on the right path for sure
I think I would just replace the cab too. Like you said you're gonna have to pull the old one off anyway. That one looks pretty rough.
I’m loving this build. Never been to in to diesel trucks but have gotten more and more in to them as of late.
UA-cam, especially channels like this one are basically the reason why I bought a diesel, couldn’t be happier with it.
Get out while you still can.
Should go compounds if you plan to daily drive, race and tow, especially with the 5.9. You’ll get low end spool and torque for daily drivability and enough air on the top end for the weekends ;)
Hey truck master I'm a collision auto repairman and I love your builds, I've repaired and restored many second gen dodge trucks, check your rockers, the fenders are junk, but the floor boards may be good. Most of the second gens I've repaired had rotted out floors and look at the fire wall I've seen those rust and have holes
The right way to do it would be to replace the cab, really - especially on a truck you intend to keep around for a long time. If you're gonna pull it to do other work (like blasting/painting/coating the frame, any mechanical work, etc.), you're halfway home so it just makes sense. The existing cab needs a lot.
You have the time and the talent, that's why you are The Truck Master! A lot of us have learned a lot from you. Have faith brother, use the gift The Lord gave you. I look forward to upcoming videos. Thank you for sharing your time and talents with all of us.
Thanks brother
Wow the frame is looking great! The duramax frames are thicker but don’t hold up as well because of the crappy wax coat gm puts on them. That’s insane. Gm still hasn’t learned
I totally agree
Best thing to do is get you a replacement cab doors on fenders save you a lot of time
I have a 01 that I need to do the same thing too she is getting pretty bad so I can't wait to watch this whole process! I'm also interested in the Duramax stuff too
I'm dealing with a similar situation with my 3gen. Replace the cab. Its much cheaper, not having a body shop, and frees up that funds and time to focus on compounds.
Good point
Josh , don't know if this will help , I think you said you have a 1999 dodge , they look close but my son has a 2004 1500 series gasser with a good cab and nose , but you would have to move the rear cab mounts because this one is a 4 door and then use a 6 1/2 foot bed . We are southwest of Chicago Illinois , 15 miles from Indiana border .
As someone who lives in the south (Texas), I’m always blown away at the carnage northern trucks face as they rot away.
there is lots of ram truck being parted out in kentucky and Tennessee area
Smart move on the cab. It was my first comment when you asked first time. It's not a waste of money, you have kids that would love to drive it.
Keep in mind not all probes are pre turbo, so the temps people give can vary greatly simply by location. Never tested it myself but trusted mechanics have told me its around a 300° temp drop across the turbo.
I've been searching for box for my 08 Dura Extd Cab. I'm retired, if you find what you need, and I find what I need, glad to do the road trip. Especially Arizona. SP4-1973
Probably cheaper to buy a wrecked truck down south and bring it back up. Hell had a guy come from NYC to get meds for his great dane. Said he got a road trip and still saved 200 bucks
if you want something cool maybe just do a cool custom flat bed with a headache rack
That rust isnt too bad and you have a clean and clear title the sheet metal is cheap and easy to get.
given the amount of rust I saw before you pulled the carpet I was surprised you where considering fixing it. Just replacing the cab is the right call given how much time and money it will save you.
I’d love to see a street truck build
-cowl hood
-keep the sport front bumper
-roll pan for the rear bumper
-lower it maybe drop shackles
-stance wheels with nitto 420s or something like that
all your trucks seem very off-roady would be nice to see a different type of build but at the end of the day you seem like you like the lifted big off-roady trucks and it is yours at the end of the day so do what ever you want with it just trying to give some suggestions
2002 LB7 high flow manifolds/up pipes. All the intake and exhaust upgrades, 64mm turbo, 6 speed Alison, re-geared to 4.30 and I am rocking about 750-900 depending on grade cruising at 75 mph 4400 in elevation as well
I don't have a manifold EGT probe yet but my factory EGT in my downpipe on my LML runs about 400-500 degrees just cruising.
I think you are right by changing the cab the, the integrity of the cab will be way stronger on a rust free Virgin cab.
Only reason I would want to see you save and restore the cab is just to watch the restoration process of everything you would need to do to restore it instead of replacing it.
Cab swap is best way. That one is way to far gone! We used 8 guys to pick a complete quad cab up and walk it back, had the doors and interior in it still.
Wow!
New cab was the best decision....alot of work...and we know you are not a body guy...lol.....can't wait to see how u get the cab off....I need to get mine off too and thinking of using two cherry pickers ....but great work
98 12 valve Cummins moderate upgrades. Turbo, injectors, delivery valves, lift pump, 3 piece exhuast manifold, fire ringed and studded, valve springs, push rod, ect. Cruiseing at around 650 degrees pulling a trailer its right around 1000
Not bad at all
@@TruckMaster been watching ypu for a long time so happy you finally got a CUMMINS lol keep up the great content and thank you for your service to this country
@@Thedave2224 thanks 👍
my buddy has a 2001 dodge body in good condition no rust at all... Only problem is we live in Arkansas
Your the reason I got into diesels. I bought my first LBZ a month ago and I’m loving it.
You have to be realistic when it comes to rebuilding something that rotten. You have do it the right way, and a new cab is the right way to go because it’s so much cheaper
Yeah a rust free 2wd donor is what u need . That thing is salvageable, but with how cheap you can get a new one ..... keep up the grind!
She’s in rough shape but I seen worse it’s definitely repairable now it’s up to you if you just want to repair it or not. Love your videos and stay safe and take care
Replacing the cab is the right choice, good call.
I see a deposit at the crusher and a road trip for a cab in your future.
My EGT floats around 800 or so with s364.5 and profab uppipes and manifolds...
Keep the dash and front Pilar (title) extended frame make four door and extended door for a total of a six door, Ram Limousine with a short bed,
Great, I think you should go single turbo if its a daily. Compound if its a track truck.
Good call on replacing the cab - repairing the existing cab would be very time consuming.
The river garages tall enough you can use a chain hoist And some 4 by 4 Boards
Good choice about replacing the cab, way to much rust repair. My 6.7 cummins for egt’s, normal driving is around 500-600 and going long distance uphills 800-900
Personally, I'd try to find an old square body, extended cab to put on it. it would be worth the wait to find one.
No such thing 🤣
You don’t need a hoist, you have straps and rafters. Just be sure to install some support.
Thanks! That’s what I’m thinking as well
Shove it out and use the skid steer with forks through the cab... it's scrap scrap metal... won't hurt it... when you get what ever for a replacement... call in some friends and use your ARMY physical fitness skills and lift...
@@ronthompson2366 that’s true, but practice makes perfect. When the new cab comes , knowing what not to do may be helpful. 🤣😂.
Hey brother been watching your channel for awhile now it’s very informational. Also I heard you were in Afghanistan in 2011 I was with 10th MTN in RC south 2011-2012. Thanks again for this channel it has really helped with my LB7 duramax.
I bought my fenders from D.A.R which is a little far, West Virginia but they are great fenders. I’d forsure pull the cab. That’s what I’m doing. I’m pulling my cab this week hopefully.
If it were mine; I’d cowboy it out and make it your tow rig. New cab, flat bed or hauler bed and throw a pair of dually tires on the rear axle. Twin stack exhaust painted black to finish it off.
Might even be able to get a local manufacturer to throw in the bed as a promo with your following. 🤷🏼♂️
My brother has a 96 cummins 2500 and he is swapping the cab with one from a 99 1500 because the 99 cab is really clean.
Use a chain fall on a tree and hoist the cab off the frame
👍
Southern cab, black diamond plate aluminum flat bed and throw some twins on it!! Excited to watch the build
I like your thinking
Swap the cab and save some change to put in the motor I have a second gen source you could possibly use just has rear end damage
New giveaway truck huh?? I'm sure it'll look as good as the red truck did when its all done! Can't wait to see the final product
I unfortunately can’t give this one away 👍
Been watching your videos for a while now and they are great. Always blows my mind how close your truck is to garage door 😂
One of my favorite channels to watch and I don't even own a diesel
Thanks!
Isn't the vin attached to the dash? cant you just put the dash into the new cab and everything is fine. I'm sure people on here will let me know!
Good point
Fly south find a good pick a part pull the cab take it to a shipping company. Have it shipped to your doorstep. Had a bed and cab shipped from Texas to Michigan. Saved a bunch of time and money.
If your pulling the cab anyway, you might as well replace it. I’ve seen worse get repaired and last but if ur pulling it...swap it. You can find new fenders pretty cheap from Sherman’s here in Michigan or I believe jc Whitney has them cheap also.
double a frame made 2X6 and then cross 2 2X6 under that cab. lift A Frame sides up and pull rolling frame out from under cab. or get a chain hoist and attach to a beam, get a matching chain hoist and set on beam lift cab with it. then roll the frame out. bring in Trailer and load up... other option. cut it out, Remove front and back glass then cut roof pillars and use bobcat to pull roof of cab off. then cut the bolts on the frame and pull the rest off the back with the bobcat....
I think its a great choice. It's like you stated, you have to take the cab off anyway to do the frame and that cab needs so much work it's not worth it. The cab mounts and the entire floor pan needs to be done with all that rust on the bottom of it and then obviously the rockers and cab corners like you said and that everyone else could see from the vidoe . You could possibly undercoat the "new" cab and the bed with extra money you save. If that was in plans.. Either way can't wait for more videos man!
Pull the engine out of the shipping crate it’s in. Take that Cummins. Find a clean 2500 chevy install with the Allison transmission behind it. Then have fun!
Honestly you are probably right about the cab situation. I’m all about fixing up a nice dodge or GM truck great vehicles but if you source rockers and doors and floor pans things of that nature it runs up cost pretty good. It is a hassle but I think you will be pleased with doing the cab swap it might save you money in the long run especially if you can get fenders and doors from the parts truck you are getting the cab from. Maybe another subscriber or yourself might find a whole truck for parts that maybe the engine is no good or trans is junk and the owner might sell the whole truck that way you have more then enough parts to fix this beast. Might even be able to get a nice dash and such that way as well. Hope that helps 🤷🏼♂️ keep up the good work 👍 can’t wait to see the outcome!
Thanks for the info 👍
im glad you decided to replace the whole cab . the time and money that would go into replacing all those parts woudnt have been worth the effort in the end. i vote for a huge single whirly boi!
Dude, dude, dude. Come on down to Texas. You'll find plenty of rust-free Dodge Ram quad cabs to replace that one, and the bed as well. Next on the list, compound turbos, Allison 10spd slushbox with stronger internals like the victory Max, or an NV4600 manual. Carli 6 inch lift suspension or Kelderman lift bags, Faas lift pump. Upgrade to 14 mm bolts for the engine block, ARP studs, fire ring the head for more boost. 14-inch pizza pan brakes with SSBC bigass brake calipers. An intercooler the size of Rhode Island with methanol injection. Drop in the 6.7 crank. Or you could get the HD frame from the 90's Chevy flatbed tow trucks, the ones with the 5 lug front axle. You can tow some crazy stuff with that frame. Drop a 90's Chevy crew cab body on the frame and call it a day. How bout that?
What block is it? 53 blocks are known for cracking but if it’s made it this long it probably isn’t going to crack. I’ve seen one 53 block that had the snot beat out of it and didn’t crack but that’s what they are notorious for
Edit. Also get rid of that trans. There just isn’t enough room in that trans for the proper holding material long term. Allison swap it or manual. Guy on eBay specializes in Cummins bus take outs. Could get an Allison from him convert it to 4wd and add a gm261xhd
Luckily it’s not the 53 block
I agree with nick bud that whole cab is dust might want to look for a good used cab
Hey Dude. I'll buy the pillars with the gauges if you want to get rid of them..
We need this and that on an on... what u mean is a new truck is what u need!
For normal driving anywhere 400-600 the egt temp
I had stock manifolds and up pipes. I was running around 300° at idle after it warmed up and crusing I was around 700° on my lbz duramax.
Thanks for the info
L5p egt locally 400-600, towing uphil 1050-1150 . Think I seen 1200. It’ll actually regen a little when they get that hot
Haha perfect timing. Mine came in today also and I have NO IDEA how to install it
There was a rust free cab on Facebook market place in Howell mi for 700.00
Really!
@@TruckMaster it was
@@TruckMaster it was just a shell I heard in Chelsea is a place with rust free parts
The time alone will make a new cab more than worth it. Putting a new cab will pay dividends when you look back at it. So build a small gantry crane to pull cab...what does one weigh...less than an cummins engine?
I lived in Wisconsin for 60 years and didn't know about Kodiak Trucks. So thanks (I have a F250 6.0TD up there...all stock no troubles).
That cab is ABSOLUTELY trashed! Wise decision to go with another cab, saves time and money! Keep up great work!
Find a nice 1998-2002 body with a junk motor and swap it the cab is pretty bad you could save it but it’s gonna cost a lot either way it will be worth it in the end... I love my 02 24v
Put the 24 valve in a Denali Quadra steer... Single turbo
That would be cool
Wish I could show you a picture but the outlet for my inter cooler where it has a short piece of rubber hose that attaches to intake up pipe has oil and grease all over it on the bottom side. Any ideas where it’s coming from. I do have a loss of power on low end off the line. Till the engine reaches about 2400 rpm. Is it possible to have an oil leak on the hot side of turbo being blown into the inter cooler. I’m pretty sure the unison ring is probably stuck half way . Also if I buy a code reader will it give a code that ring is stuck.
It’s your pcv, they tend to clog up. Do a pcv reroute
Ok I was thinking about replacing stock intake with s&b intake. But still think something is wrong with turbo ,, thanks
I cruise on freeway at 700 egt in manifold on a stealth 64 turbo single with pro fab up pipes and cast manifolds
My LBZ ran between 800-900 none towing. Towing light about 1100-1200. Highest was in 1300’s
Great video👍🏻 great idea to replace the cab. Save you some money and a little less work. Keep up the good content and run 2 🥳😂 🤟🏼
I think a new cab is a good idea. Youll probably save money in the long run and not have as much work to do body wise. Wish i could give you a hand pulling it off but i live to far away. Its gonna be a cool build for sure. I wanna see you dig into the motor so i can learn something. I knew nothing about the duramax until i started watching your channel. Now i know it blindfolded.
Replacing the cab is the right Decision
I’ve been running an Edge CTS-2 EGT probe first about a year.
Cruising EGT 75 mph about 700,
Towing #6,000, about 850-900
Full throttle, full load, 1400 max. I don’t sustain that temp for more than 10 sec. I will run 1,100 for 1-2 min
Thanks for the info
I’m running a RDS 64mm, adjusted to 29 psi max, 40 over injectors, and an Edge CTS-2. It’s a conservative tune, as the trans has 358K.
Yes 100% replace cab this one has already started to return to the ground
Love this channel enjoy every episode plus I don’t even own diesel truck they are way to expensive in Australia. For a new Dodge Ram 1500 petrol they start at 100k
Thanks from your Aussie friends
Are you 100% sure you have to retitle it? You're essentially just replacing all the body parts. Not the frame or powertrain.. Pretty sure you can just swap vin tags
If I switched dashes I should be good
God.. 7liter engine... We have a 7 liter in an old 6x6 truck that has 73kw..i would love to move to america just because of those monsters of engines you got there
I’d check that frame very very thoroughly as well.
Yeah replace the cab saves so much time and money
