I really relate with Steven's "playing WoW while watching videos" thing. I too learned english by doing that, except with Runescape instead of WoW haha. And the urge to do the same thing with japanese is there, except the few times I've tried, I ended up doing less japanese overall than if I just didnt play runescape haha
1:31:00 - if only I could actually get anki plugins to work so well :-( I appreciate srs but I've yet to get anki working so smoothly. Always a pain in my ass so ive had to resort to something else that doesn't have any plugins but at least it doesn't take me more than 5 hours to get it working.
How do you not get burnt out? I used Stevie's spreadsheet for a bit and managed to hit around 4 hours a day (plus an hour of anki on top) over a two week period but noticed I became very stressed so I had to stop. Doing that much immersion, doesn't it stress you out?
Honestly no. Doing everything else besides immersion does stress me out a lil though lol. Getting good at Japanese is what I want to spend my time doing right now, so when I'm able immerse it's a good feeling, not a stressful one. What is it about immersion that's stressing you out?
@@KanjiEater I suppose my case is slightly different since I am learning Korean, so the media available is probably less than Japanese (ex. its hard to find video games or anime dubbed in Korean). However, that aside I found that saying to myself "I need to do 4 hours a day to reach my goal", makes the process really unenjoyable. Which makes me think how do people like you and Stevie just 'suck it up' and not have it affect you stress-wise? Sure it is somewhat 'fun', but like you mentioned in the interview there is varying 'fun' within each bit of content, novels vs manga etc. So really the question is, do you think being able to put yourself through delayed gratification is a personality thing, if so, can one change their mindset so they don't get burnt-out after a few weeks like I have experienced? p.s If you are curious about my level, I can read novels but not understand EVERYTHING and can follow the story in tv shows but miss some details, a 'Refold stage 4' if you will.
Thanks for the details. I assure you I did not start at 25 hours of immersion a day ;). Stevi mentions in our first video that he didn't either. Rather it's something you build up to. However now I'm consistently (for a couple months) maintaining 7.5 hr of immersion + 1.5hr of anki a day. For how long, I'm not sure - depends on when life kicks out the base of my hierarchy of needs pyramid. How I got here, was tracking stats only against myself. If you're not ready for 4 hours, that means something else is more important or your don't have a system of habits in place to match what you think is important versus what's easier to do - which is fine, own your schedule & habit progress as it currently is. Track what's comfortable to do. Don't compare your weekly numbers to me or stevi, compare them to yourself last week. Did you like immersing more or less this week than last week? Adapt accordingly. Keep in mind my Japanese journey has been a long one, over 6 years. I'm guessing most folks out there such as yourself can get good in Korean much faster than I have in Japanese if you start your personal development/stat tracking journey early. So the tldr here, "suck it up" isn't really a strategy, it's something I grew into. Learning to Delay your Gratification, is a skill. Finally, the game of using the language gets more fun over time. Hope this helps, but let me know if you have any other thoughts or questions.
@@KanjiEater Hi thanks for the response, now that I have had some time to reflect, I realize I am 2 months away from a big life change (going to Korean uni). Which I have had to work extra hard for since the I am essentially short-cutting the UK high school graduation process, meaning I have to do half a years work in a few months. Not saying I have it 'harder' or anything but I do have mild Asperger's so my stress levels can get unnecessarily high at times when under pressure. Everyone has their own challenges so perhaps I should have been more considerate to myself (p.s. don't take this as limiting-beliefs/ sob story, I am aware that my goal is still very achievable, I am just speaking my thoughts out-loud ). I too have been learning Korean for about 4-ish years but only discovered immersion learning in april 2020. So comparing myself to people like yourself, Stevi and Matt is an easy mistake to make when one doesn't consider their own circumstances. Thanks for giving some perspective, I will start my tracking again after these two months and start small like you suggest, for the mean time I am still getting decent numbers in without a schedule so maybe its not so bad without a spreadsheet after all!
Does anybody know if the setup from animecards also works for apple? I'm planning on buying a MacBook Air but I'm not sure if i can set it up with the configuration that anime cards describes as for Windows... If I can't do mining and connect the adds on as easy as in windows, I might change my mind about getting a MacBook...
Basic yomichan auto cards should work the guide on media tho is windows and Linux specific. There may be some alternatives on Mac try asking people on discords
