@@StephGarrido you nailed it.. Any chance of doing If I could fly?

What attracted me in doing the transcriptions of Shapeshifting is that no one ever did it before, and I only had my ears and equipment to rely on.. Songs like if I could fly have been covered before, and more importantly, we have videos of Joe playing it live.. Not quite the same challenge, don't you think..

@@StephGarrido True and we definitely appreciate that, but there's only about 2 or 3 UA-camrs who have done justice to If I could fly, and now having seen your playing I would love to see your rendition as I believe you would smash it.. Anyway keep up the awesome work.

Seriously fantastic work, Steph. Thank you so much. Two quick questions: that fiendish arpeggio... I am not good at the crosshand dampening technique and get really different volume levels on the strings by hammering on from nothing. Would that work as a (difficult) sweep arpeggio? Second... the passage after the arpeggio: when you're playing that, do you think of it in terms of the triplets rather than string groupings (if that makes sense)?

    • @StephGarrido

Hi Venlon! So the Arpeggio in bar 76 is something I first heard in a previous Satriani track (The mystical potato head groove thing) from "Flying in a blue dream".. So needless to say I have played this kind of thing for quite a while.. You can of course try in sweeping, but it kinda looses a bit of smoothness.. What I recommended instead, is prepare that arpeggio by taping sequences of string ( first Low E and A.. Then E A D A then E A D G D A , E A D G B G D A and finally E A D G B E B G D A.. Tap like you would on a piano.. And play with a click to stay in triplet feel..
For next lick, just play the sequence slowly in triplets and pay attention to the picking hand.. It first stroke on the beat then on second triplet of beat 2 and beat 3 and on the beat for the forth beat.. Next bar is also starting with a down stroke on the beat and finishes by picking up and sliding then slightly bend that C and resolve on the D .. Just play the sequence a few times and it will start to make sense..
      Hope this helps..

@@StephGarrido Many thanks. I'll work at it that way. Some of Satch's later stuff sounds reasonably straightforward compared to some more modern players (Sfogli, Nick Johnston, Plini, etc.), but it's much harder than it sounds once you start to try to play it. I love his use of open strings - those runs here and on 'All My Friends Are Here' are great -, and I find them much trickier than they sound (real test of your pull-off technique). I'm a long, long way from getting any of this down, but enjoying the journey! I'm also totally in awe at what you've done with this album.
