Minnesota has had a pretty mild Winter, too. November started off harsh, but December and January have been very mild, for the most part. I'm loving it!
Sounds like you got thoroughly chilled. It makes you feel a lot of pain in your joints and gives you a headache. A warm soak will definitely help.

If you are going for northern pike I would suggest getting a tip-up or two and setting those up with live minnows (if you can get those) and then using a vertical jig while you wait for the tip-ups.i would suggest putting the tip-ups like 15-20 feet from each other or from where you are at. It's exactly the same here in Lithuania (eastern(ish) Europe). We usually get alot of snow, but half of the winter passed and there is still none. It's weird. Even though people try to deny it, the climate is changing...
Yeah there is something wrong... In Finland it just started to get really cold like in the old days... it sucks that in notime there wont be a thing called cold winter.

Cory, here in Maine, we had snow since our last snow storm and just between Sunday and yesterday, we had a storm that dropped about an inch of rain on is and gave us temperatures in the 40's to near 50. The rain has washed away all of the snow we had on the ground and the only snow we have now remains as snowbanks.

About the weather: That's the way it is in Alaska, some winters are very mild and others are very harsh (been down to -39F for a few weeks a few years ago), some winters there isn't much snow and others there is a lot of it (a few years ago many roofs were damaged because the snow had accumulated so much), you just never know. I have to admit that personally I enjoy this mild winter so far, but yes it would be nice if there was more snow right now (eventho, contrary to probably many Alaskans, I also enjoy this in a way because I broke my leg before Christmas and I can't shovel right now lol).
I know how you feel Cory.
On New Year's eve it was -15°C and snowing, now it's usually around 15°C and it looks like spring time.
I don't ever remember when was the last time we had 15°C in the middle of January :( .

I live in Carlsbad, about 35 miles north of San Diego and SoCal GOT snow down to 1000 feet a few weeks ago!! Temecula and places around it had a bunch of snow and I could see snow when I was driving through Oceanside! It was also high in the 50's during that time... it's crazy. :)
In the end it sounds like Penny is tap-dancing XD Just listen to her walking again and picture her on two legs tap-dancing :D

Yup you called it. California looks pretty much like that... minus the snow covered mountains in the distance. Today was the first time i saw my breath when I stepped outside o.0. I want some cold! Cory, at Alaska's latitude it's good idea to take some vitamin D supplements this time of year since you don't see much sun. Normally the body creates its own vitamin D from the exposure to the sun but since it's not up much, it can create a deficiency, which can then weaken the immune system among other things. That's one of the reasons why people get sick more easily during winter time.

Pay a visit to Maine - we have plenty of snow every winter. We're like Alaska's little cousin.

You should try using tip ups, put a steel lead on the line and the line would be harder to break and use minnows"live bait" if you try use the Shiners I caught a 41inch pike yesterday on a tip up the only thing I use jig poles are for panfish but anyway try tip ups Cory!
Ya something is up with the weather this year. It's about 75 here is Arizona in the daytime which is even weird for here! In January, it is usually about 55-45 during the day and 25-35 at night!

The last winter we lived in Anchorage (back in '84-'85), there was more ice than snow, almost like they are experiencing this year - but when we left Anchorage in latter half of September '85, things were back to normal. We drove down the Al-Can to Tacoma, WA and the snow caught up with us by the time we'd even hit Tok.

During the summer (or I guess a place that isn't frozen solid) if you want to catch pike try buzz bait in like a weedy part of a lake or big river. It worked great for me last time I was in Alaska. 8 pike within an hour.

I will be back next week and will no doubt bring the snow with me. When I left a year ago, the cold and snow followed me to Ohio.
It's the same here in Wisconsin. I mean it snowed maybe an inch last night but that's it. This was the first year in my life where there wasn't snow for Christmas. :(
