DudeLikeHELLA Well Cory, Everybody laughed at you when you moved up there & said the ferocious weather would be your undoing.
But, just today, there were torrential rains that led to five-foot-deep mudslides covering Azusa, and most all of Ventura county has been either flooded or buried up to the rooftops in mud. South L.A. has been ripped up by 85 mph tornados, Pacific Gas & Electricity are down and they can only shrug when asked when they will be back up!
Meanwhile in Alaska, you spent the day ice fishing until you had to leave for a delicious dinner meeting. ; >
      So, who's laughing now, Californians?

Thanks again Cory - enjoyed this. So glad to see Penny looking happy again. I agree it must be great to live where you can be in such calm scenery one minute and not much later have driven into town - I like that a lot.

    1. I'm SO happy that Penny is feeling better! ❤️
    2. That snowy drive was amazing!!!
    3. Last, but certainly not least, your walking across the frozen lake, drilling a hole, etc. totally freaked me out. I hope you stay safe! Sometimes I get the feeling that you think you're invincible. ;)

I hate getting cold. I work on a Golf Course in the spring through fall. I was working one day when a Cold front went in. I went from in the 50s to the 20s in less then a hour, with 20+ mph wind. It was brutal. Cold itself is not bad when it's calm, it is mostly the wind that makes it bad.

During the coldest portion of Winter here in MN, Lakes can substitute for parking lots, as well as offer ways to travel without having to take the road..
Also, the fishing houses here tend to look a lot more permanent than your shelter. Some have actual propane heaters. I don't think the ice is thick enough quite yet for it to be safe to drive and/or place fish houses out, but it should be before too terribly long.
The noises the ice makes are cool too. I heard a slight bit of it in the background. Sometimes, it gets to be really loud, especially during the end of the season, when the ice is starting to go out..

I am glad I found your channel, and so glad you share it with us !!! have to love internet ! to see places some of us might not get to !!! and great people like you that share your life !

It gets down to -40 in Fairbanks sometimes. It's always much colder inland because there isn't that onshore flow like you have in Anchorage. You and Kristin should take a trip to Barrow, the northernmost town in the US. As I write this it's -10 there. I bet you'd love to look out at the Arctic Ocean, just to say you've been there.
I bet you'd love Barrow. According to wunderground they're getting 3 hours a day of civil twilight now.

Thanx again for all the scenery. Love it. Also, when I walk out into the cold, when it's not windy, it's like a refreshing glass of ice water to me. Now if it gets gusty windy, then it bites. I'm sure you will experience that windy bite at some point.

  • @JonesFamilyTravels

Wow! That drive was amazing! Reminds me of northern Minnesota (where I lived as a kid). We used to ice fish and I once put my entire leg through an ice fishing hole that had iced over a bit. It was cold! But, we had ice fishing houses that had wood burning stoves in them, so I warmed up in there!

The best thing about -40 was that when it got back up to -20, we were all in short sleeves! The worst part was that even my shepherd/husky wanted another coat!
Hmmm... too rhythmic to be hunters. Maybe ice knocking together underwater? An eerie sound!
I wonder if the deeper places have warmer water, and the fish would be there? Or did they leave because of the vibrations from the auger? Either way, it IS nice, and I wish I could be there too!

Cory, I get anxious when you go out on a lake by yourself even if it is frozen. What if you stepped on a place that had a hole underneath the snow cover? You'd break your leg and who would know? The coldest weather I ever expierenced was in Siberia, where I went 15 years ago, in January, and it was -40 (C or F - somehow they connect at exactly that point). The locals went outside and were all "awesome day, the sun's out and almost no wind!"... and me? Despite wearing proper, local clothes - I've chilled my kidneys and lived on painkillers for a week. =__=

You're right its not that cold yet. Some winters are mild, and some are harsh, but be ready for at least a few days/weeks of -10F, or lower, like in 2009 the temp was around -20F for a few days, or even 1 or 2 weeks, I can't remember exactly, but it was cold (this of course is the temperature in the Anchorage area, it can get much colder in other areas of Alaska). I hope you have a good winter coat, and I hope you and Kristen will be able to cope with it because I think its pretty cool that you moved here.

Cory becareful in Alaska, I am a bit unsure what the temperature usually is but I'm in Norway above the polar circle and if you have low immunity and you sweat and then go outside in the cold. You will get very sick. I don't want to talk about my worst sickness I ever had but yea just be a little careful. Don't sweat before going outside. Keep yourself dry before going out if you have been sweating.

Bro, if nothing happens for 4-5 min of jigging, you should try a. differet lure color, b. different lure type. Moreover, never drill just one hole. Drill 8-10 and then just move around. Especially, if you have a motorized ogre and a light tent, it should literally take minutes to do. Even if the holes are just 10 meters apart. ;) good luck! P.s. thanks for the channel, you guys are great to watch.
