Kurt, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy personal day to give us all these pointers
Very much appreciated sir! 👍
@@sanderthao You can't just join SAG-Aftra whenever you want. You'll get a letter from SAG informing you that you're now SAG eligible. We call that the "can join" letter. Then you'll get a second letter (after you've done a few more SAG jobs) indicating that you now MUST join the union. It's best to hold off on joining SAG until you have to join. Whether you have an agent or not. Joining too soon can potentially mean the end of your acting career depending on circumstances (seen it happen twice). Nobody wants to pay SAG wages for an inexperienced actor that's got nothing on their IMDb and/or no training.
@@mrlizardmouth I think his cheat sheet is mostly for auditions. You're not going to learn everything about acting by reading about it anymore than you're going to learn to ride a bike by reading about it. You could have a PhD in mechanical engineering but you'll never learn balance until you get on and ride.
@@liquidbraino ok thx
KURT YOU ARE A WIZARD. Since I started watching you I moved out. started taking acting classes. and booked my first role BECAUSE OF YOU. Today I googled just what I need for my next step. It was a demo reel. THANK YOU KURT!!!!
Congrats & a High-Five!
what websites you used?

Well done! Congratulations!
As an actor in LA, I can attest to anyone pursuing this you MUST have a reel! Even if it is a high quality self-tape audition (and not the final clips from the film/TV show that you performed), that is better than nothing.
Using myself as an example, a film I did took months in post-production. Instead of waiting for that footage, I took my best self-tape auditions for roles I didn't book (best performances AND best quality like lighting, sound etc) and posted that on my Backstage and Actors Access profiles when I submit for projects. Since then with new headshots, I've gotten more audition requests than I can count.
Hiya hows your acting adventure goin
Auditions will for sure come in! But when it comes time for a casting director to cast you, they'll go with your competition who has professional footage in their reel because they know they were actually hired for produced work and have experience on a professional set. Casting directors are risk averse and don't want to put - what looks like to them - an "amateur" on set and risk them not being able to hit their marks, remember lines, or risk them buckling under pressure. You will for sure be able to book unpaid roles to *hopefully* get more footage but usually with unpaid work, the footage also is not professionally produced.
The problem is "amateur" footage actually hurts you. "Something is better than nothing" unfortunately doesn't apply here. Take it from us. We're a team of well seasoned producers, award winning DP's, etc. and we've seen it all. We put together a free demo reel training here. liminalitymedia.com/welcome
Excellent advice, Kurt! Actors have to sell themselves. When I cast a film, I really, really, really like demo reels. I ALWAYS ask for them. How else can I see what you can do, to see if you fit? Please give me a wide variety of your roles, so I can tell if you would be right for the part. A variety of your roles help, because the films I've made range from dramas to comedies to thrillers. Oh, and a good head shot with a resume.
Ditto. A demo reel, even if it is just a well-done audition tape, is PERFECT because of the 3 things you need (other 2 are professional headshots and a resume), a reel is the least thing you can FAKE. It is your showcase.
Loved that you used Graphic Design as the illustration, because that is the line of work I am currently in. So it made it super relatable!
Can you use self taped auditions in your reel ??
I’ve only done two acting classes but, I’m going full force. I’ve already scheduled my headshots, I’m planning to create my demo reel here. I’ve memorized and practiced two commercials and one monologue.
You’re an inspiration, Kurt! Your advice is so helpful.
How's it going
How is it going for you ?
Hey Kurt! How do we get a dialogue for a demon reel? Does it have to be created by me or can I use pre-existing scripts online?
Yep, this is on my list of things to do, I haven’t updated my demo reel in years. I have gotten some new footage since then. My main point of procrastination is that I want it to be close to perfect, and I don’t know if I should hire someone to cut it for me or if I should cut it myself. Also, there is some footage of me where I have no dialogue, but my action acting skills are highlighted, and since action is my main interest, I wonder if it’s ok to put a scene in my reel with no dialogue, just physical acting. Thank you for this video!
Sometimes it's ok to have a scene with no dialogue on your reel, but scenes with dialogue should take precedence
I hear you. I have several where I'm either alone or with the principal but have not actual dialogue. So it's a look; smirk a smile reaction to something. I'll beef that up with an audition tape.
KURT I SAW YOU ON DYNASTY SEASON 4 AND LITERALLY YELLED AT MY MOM ''HEY THAT'S MY YOU TUBE ACTING COACH''😂❤

Thanks for the great tip Kurt. Can a demo reel be part of a scrip that already exists or something you need to create on your own?

Thank you so much for all your advice Kurt! I'm a working voice-over actor in LA and I have been so interested in trying film. Your content gives me a great place to start! I'm not sure if on-camera work is for me yet, but I'm excited to see what happens
Hey Kurt! I was wondering maybe in a future video maybe you can talk about Demo Reels vs. Clips? I’ve been advised my multiple fellow actors/industry folks on podcast/UA-cam videos that casting is more attracted to smaller clips opposed to only having a demo reel. Both reels and clips obviously serve different purposes and I’d love to hear your talk on that subject!
Short clips are good for sites like Casting Networks because when you post your resume you can add a short 10 second clip right next to each listing so they can actually "see" your resume & not just read it. A demo reel is more of a compilation of all those clips in a video (usually) no more than two minutes long which only contains your best work.
@@liquidbraino A demo reel of clips from your best professional work is good for your own website or submitting to AGENTS.
For casting websites, you can still use that demo reel, but I think it's better in those short clips, especially if one of those fits best the tone or genre of the role you're applying. Casting directors DO NOT have time to go through your greatest hits reel to find that one 10-second clip that fits the role - they would much appreciate you finding your own best 10 seconds to show them you fit the part.
We’re really close to 100k subscribers!!! I’m so excited for you Kurt! Love this channel.
Can't thank you enough for spreading your knowledge, and helping other actors. It is much appreciated. -Shayne from Louisiana
Hi Kurt. I’m still struggling with getting things that I have done already - ie the boys on prime, in the shadow of the moon on Netflix. Unfortunately Netflix and prime won’t let me record my scene and I don’t know how to get those scenes on to tape for my demo. Suggestions?
Hi Jay, You can reach out to a service that pulls actor footage. For example backtoonecreative.com/ or actorfootage.com/
Hi I just want to say that your IMDb link is incorrect at least to 404 page. Thanks for all your great content.
This was helpful, I'm primarily a stage actor so I've been stumped on how to make a professional demo reel for agent submissions. Thanks for the tips!
I’ve only done two acting classes but, I’m going full force. I’ve already scheduled my headshots, I’m planning to create my demo reel here in the next couple days. I’ve memorized and practiced two commercials and one monologue.
You’re an inspiration, Kurt! Your advice is so helpful.
Hey how is it going
@@GiovanniMorenoMusichey! Sorry for the late reply. It’s going well! 1 year later I’ve got a demo reel made, I have an agent, I’ve acted in a number of non-union projects, and have filmed 1 commercial! How about you?
@@wyatthaas260 it seems my response got deleted but for me its a little on a low fire so to say, we got our son last december and i havent worked on acting since, but before that i was able to be an extra in a few projects to get some experience.. havent made a demo reel tho
I don’t know if you would like that but you should put your video into podcasts and put them on Spotify for example 👍
Always good info !
As usual, so grateful to you Kurt, this information in awesome!
When doing a scene, are we trying to get as close and accurate to the original scene, or are we putting our own spin on it?
Hi!
Can you choose a monologue from a movie and act to it?
I would love to see you put together a video on how to make a reel when you already have work to pull from tv and film. What software or apps do you use to pull the content, how to pull the content and how to piece it all together.
7:26 hehe what if u have no friends 😢
Ordinary Joe I play Dr. Cho on that show..gotta see Black Widow..woah.. let's go.. 💫🙏🏾💫
So will multiple demo reels be good?
Thank you so much for all your helpful tips! As a theatre actor with no film footage, I need to make my own reel from scratch. I really appreciate your suggestion of having another actor off-camera reading another role, so as to have someone to respond to. I am thinking of selecting a bit of dialogue from a published play. What do you think about this idea? Many thanks! 🙂
Hey Kurt why don't you start an online acting school we will feel very happy to join that 😃
Any advice on how to find scenes? Like should we steal from movies / shows
Make something up?? I’m curious
Hi Kurt, what type of back drop system do you use? I see that it appears to be either a wall or photography backdrop of some type. I'm doing okay with a thicker ironed sheet using a two stand system I bought off of Amazon. Although it's a little flimsy it holds up. I was just looking for something a bit more sturdy.
Hello! I am new to your channel and so far I am loving the short informative videos you are gifting out. I do have a question about self taping a reel as a start up actor. Does the script have to be original or can a scene from an already created script be used?
Hey Kurt , thanks for a wonderful experience you’re giving us.
Can I I break down my own monologue to 2 or 3 different scenes and wearing different outfits, emotions for demo reels ?
Thank you for giving me something to grab onto. I kind of realized I want to get into acting (for real, as a job), last year. And since then I have been digging my own grave because I just graduated in something that is more a like a desk job, and now I would literally need a complete new education.
So maybe just start with a bunch of demo reel projects and see if my friends like it, or if someone would even let me star anywhere.
Question: Should there be only scripted scenes on a demo reel? Can there also be improv?
Hi Kurt, I am so eager to make a reel. Do you provide that service (paid, of course) to help others do it? I would come up to Atlanta from Florida, if I knew you could direct and film me to make a quality reel. Let me know. Thank You!
I'm not an actor, wishing I could. No confidence, not the right look. Awful memory ...
Ok, I just started out. I have no clips or no experience, so what I’m wondering is if I can use dialogue from books and use them as material to display my acting skills on screen in my self tape/demo reel. Also, can someone explain to me what the difference between a demo reel and a self tape is? Thank you so much for your help!
First, thank you so much for these videos. They have been immensely helpful! Next, would you recommend including self-tape audition videos in your demo reel, especially if it's been a long period of time since you auditioned for the role?
I didn't realize it was as simple as just a compilation of stuff you did. it sucks that I haven't documented stuff. I want to add the musical I'm doing in my reel, but I can't even record it bc of privacy violations
Your videos have helped me so much. I’d love to talk with you about what I’ve done and where to go from here. Thank you!
Am I allowed to “snag” footage of me in an official booking to share? ( Mysteries at the Museum, MTV, etc.)
I do not have a large portfolio/work for a demo reel. I have completed a demo reel however it’s only 40 seconds long. How do feel Casting Directors will view this?
Thanks for the heads up man. I'm gonna get to work on creating a demo reel right away.
What type of scenes should I do, dramatic, comedic, horror?
Are you kidding me! YOU GOT IN BLACK WIDOW :O. getting a audition is just... wow.
Not only do you help other people reach their goals, you help youself. I LOVE YOU
Hi Kurt - thanks for all of your consistent, helpful videos. As a new actor with no experience yet, how long should our demo reels be and how many/what kind of scenes should be in the reel?
Hi Kurt, great info on self-taping. I've been watching your videos for a while since deciding to go back into TV & film & want to thank you for the wide variety of information. I've been out of the industry for almost 35 years & had done cold readings on all my auditions back then (did get a few small parts & commercials). I dipped my toe back into live theater in 2007 & am still performing. And wow things have changed so much in the TV / film process! I'm brushing up on my technical skills & will be putting together my information soon. Thanks again, looking forward to more videos.
Thanks for this video. Most of my content for a demo reel would come from self-tapes of roles that I have not booked. Can you provide insight if there is any copyright laws to be aware of for using scenes like that in a demo reel for shows that haven't aired, or have aired but you weren't booked for?
Hi, I got some good material on someone else's UA-cam account, how do I download from his account so I can put it in my reel?
Got here, after seeing u in dopesick.. everytime i see u, i just get sparked "isnt that kurt yue?" Great expectations from u, btw r u gonna return in cobra kai season 4?
Hi Kurt! I would really appreciate a video on what a good agent is like and what they should be doing for you if you believe that would be useful and would like to make that! I currently have an agent but have never had one before so this would be helpful
Hi 👋
Just wanted to reach out and say that your link to the demo real appear to be broken.
Also, how do I best get hold of “copies” of the clips where I have been performing in movies? How do you do it? Screen grabs?
Thanks for awesome content!

I've been looking into acting and is something I've wanted to have a career in for a while. My mom though is always saying to me "Well what if it doesn't work out and you have nothing to fall back to because you haven't gone to college/university". Do you recommend going to post-secondary first?
It's almost an absolute necessity because there's a lot of things you have to pay for when you're an actor, like headshots, casting sites, you need to have a car and a cell phone, gas money to get to and from auditions; rehearsals; performances, IMDb-pro, acting classes - it all costs money. My best friend was a software engineer before he became an actor (just like Kurt); I went to school for Information Technology before I became an actor.
If you CAN try to pick a profession that's going to pay well but also leave you enough free time that you CAN be an actor. If you've got a regular 9-5 job and can't get days off it might not be compatible with the lifestyle of an actor. Also try to get into something you can do in any big city (like Los Angeles, ATL or New York). Don't become a farmer.
Thank you so much Kurt. I'm starting to get things going in film/TV after years of doing theatre and not knowing how to break in. Also, because of you, and I'm also now a student of Houde!! Thank you sir!!
Hey Kurt! Love your videos! How to you feel about clips? I’ve heard that casting directors now rather watch short clips than demo reels. Also, with demo reels, do you suggest keeping in under 90 seconds or 60?
Is it necessary for the viewer to hear the "scene partner" on the other side of the camera? Or can I imagine the scene partner giving me lines? I'm self-taping my reel since I've done more theatre and don't have any good solid scenes in film yet. Thanks for any insight!
this was so helpful thank you so much ! :)
Another awesome and informative video! Regarding the demo reel, if you receive sides for
a self tape audition, can you use that for your demo reel? How do you give credit to the playwright? Are there any legal implications for using someone's work for a demo?
Congratulations on your 2022 projects!!
Almost got 100k and Kurt do something special on 100k subscribers 🤩🤩🤩
If I film and self tape audition as my demo reel, what script should I use or should I just make up a scene by myself ?
No , I disagree with u , that's why their suppose to let me in the door to look at me face to face and give me a try out for non speaking featured , under 5 's / day player , no they want it easy for themselves so u have to spend thousands and somehow get people to film u ! No I'm never doing a demo reel , Heather Locklear never did a demo reel , Tom cruise never did a demo reel !
I quit acting in live shows 20 years ago. Thus has inspired me to get back at it. Thanks, I'm gonna make a demo reel
Hi Kurt. Saw you on Ordinary Joe! Great work! Regarding demo reels, I've found it challenging to get footage back from film and commercial work. Is there a way to capture scenes from online work and edit together? Maybe another topic (reels part 2) is how to create them? I use your video on editing self tapes all the time for example. Actors are expected to be pretty tech savvy these days, too! Cheers.
Getting footage can be tricky. You can use screen recorder software to capture it yourself or you can reach out to a service that pulls footage for actors such as actorfootage.com/
Hello Kurt
I have seen your videos and I always learn something new , I have a good resume and demo reels .

I was watching a movie the other day and I saw you on a air plane with a father looking for his family who got denied
Loving this channel Kurt, it's so helpful with getting started on this journey! oh and congrats on crossing 100k subs!🙌🏾
I'm from ATL and im pursuing acting! is 18 too late to start?
Thank you so much for this incredible video….every-time I watch your videos I become more confident! Everyone likes making the process sound so daunting. 😭 I had a question, how many videos should a demo reel have? And how long should it be?
A demo reel should be one to two minutes, depending on how many 10-20 second clips you have to add to your demo reel. Those shorter clips can also be added under each listing in your resume on the casting sites.
Yes I will make my own demo reel. I have the lights and a little “pop voice “microphone . I can do many accents so I think I’ll do one for each accent.
Great video! For my first demo reel, can I put three scenes in it or just focus on one scene?
So would you recommend creating one demo reel for commercial and one demo reel for film/television or can they be all in one

Hey Kurt do you get audition as lead character for any movie or TV show? Would really love you to see playing a lead role in the future in some netflix tv show or movie
you are awesome, hope to be filmed together one day:)))
Kurt dropping gems as usual. Amazing as always. I have a question though for anyone that can answer. When putting together a demo reel how do you get the footage from projects that you have done. Or is it as simple as screen recording say a show you were cast in on Netflix or recording your tv screen. Alsooooo I was rewatching venom before I went to see venom 2 and saw that you were in that movie never realized before but it was amazing seeing you in that!!!
You can screen record to get your footage. Or there are professional services that pull footage for actors. For example backtoonecreative.com/
@@ActingCareerCenter thanks again Kurt!!! Your advice is honestly great and somehow greatly timed! And almost at 100k subs keep going!!!
Now when doing this where can I get a script or can I make something of my own?
i really want to make acting a career and your videos are really helpful to watch. soon you will see me on the big screen.
Just started my acting career and this channel always continues to motivate me. Thank you for this resource! If you don’t mind answering, how much are a: Marvel movie + 1 network + 2 streaming shows putting in your pocket for 2021?? You must be rolling in cash!!!
Not as much as you might think. All of the projects paid at scale. So the network show and the two streaming shows paid about $1000 each. The marvel movie was filmed in 2019 so that paycheck was a while ago.
How do I qualify to receive agent representation
Your demo reel is gone. I went to your imdb page and it doesn't work
So what if you don’t have anyone to help you with your demo reel. How can I do it on my own
Thank u for sharing. You will see my on your set. 😊
Wendy Alane Wright said instead of demo reels we need clips. Still not sure what the difference is, except length. What do you say?
I think clips are good because when you create your resume on Casting Networks you can add a short ten second clip to each listing in your online resume, that way they're not just reading your resume, they're watching it. Then compile the best of those into a 1-2 minute demo reel for UA-cam & IMDb and/or your own website.
It shouldn't be "instead of", it should be "in addition to". Ideally, you should have both clips and a full reel.
Do you have a video on the difference between demo reels and Monologues
I do as much modeling (senior modeling) as I do acting. I struggle with weight control.
You look in really good shape. Would love to hear about your exercise, training routine.
Just an idea...

You like to play Doctors as much as I play cops lol
So this guy started this channel while he was still doing video shorts. Then he put down Forensic Photographer as a credit. I've done that, it's called glorified extra. Captain Sweatpants has more screen time and better credits than this guy.
I wish a real actor would start a channel and not these walking props who once stood in for that actor you've never heard of.
