The new mixes are outstanding. Not only is it like hearing these recordings for the first time; you also don't miss the overdubs. Hands-down, the best Memphis collection out there, particularly the '69 thru '76 period.
I am shocked at just how good this set sounds. Sun sessions largely kept pristine, cleaned up, but the removal of the backing tracks, strings, backing vocals in the later sessions has elevated this set to a new level. Very pleased so far and only into disc 2 this sounds great. Have a great weekend Ed!
Uh, I think you really need to go through the set again. There ARE overdubs all over this set, including out of sync instrumentation, unnecessary editing and digital pops and clicks. So disappointing. How do you screw up Elvis’ last #1 Billboard hit and, arguably one of his most iconic songs of his career??? Geez … 😊
So absolutely no glitch at 2:24 on Any Day Now (CD version) The guitar on Suspicious minds falls exactly on the first note of the first bars, around the seventh bar the guitar is off for the next two bars. After listening to the original I am convinced bringing up the guitar level, and bringing down the bass made it more evident, the guitar has a longer sustain in the 2024 version which makes it sound slower,and the 7 and 8th bar issue is hidden by the overdubbed strings and the heavy bass. Not bad imo. By including Elvis’ second vocal track on Don’t Cry Daddy is just weird, sounds like a quartet. And boy do I dislike Hey Jude, don’t care for original either. All in all, a great set. I would go with the Memphis Anthology 1969 over this set for the Stax sessions, but since I like the stripped down versions, makes the songs sound more timeless, this is my new go to preference.
Cardboard pockets scratch the heck out of CD. All my boxsets that have this way of storing CDs, I remove them and put them in jewel cases. It takes a LOT of them to store the Elvis CDs I have, considering I have The Complete Masters as well.
It's less of a problem than the CD's into tight cardboard , impossible to pull out. I solve both problems with plastic innersleeves in the tight cardboard, or into the half moon slots of the package. i would prefer the cd's on hubs though, or cardboard cd sleeves in the pockets, just like the beatles and Stones boxsets.
1-Inherit The Wind, 2- This Is The Story, 3-A Little Bit Of Green and 4-And The Grass Won't Pay No Mind, all from the "Back In Memphis" album are missing from this "Fully Comprehensive Collection". For what this box set cost, it should have been 6 discs and the " American '69" recordings could have been split between two CDs.
♥ The only right question is: They did 1969 pure undubbed CD box - BRILIANT! 1970 undubbed CD Box - BRILLIANT! 1971 again CD box - brilliant! And not further???? Why don´t do it further like the super thing started???? All sessions after 1971 alredy brought - in pure undubbed - AS THE DID BACK THEN IN THE STUDIO!!!! EVERYBODY LOVES/D LOVED IT! New interested people as well as experts or "experts" - I WANT THE ORIGINAL SOUND OF THE STUDIO-WORK as released before so good!!!!! I don´t want NEW SOUNDS! (So far the only super thing was BURNING LOVE with the new mix with the orchestra - AS THE VOICE OF ELVIS IS MORE IN THE FOREGROUND! ) Since the 1980s they did sooooo many strange things .... even round FTD ... sometimes super ... then next time so strange actions .... well, well, well, well, well, well, well .... as during the live time of ELVIS PRESLEY - THE MASTER OF THE UNIVERSE - sooo many mistakes with him - with his unique art ... They finally did it the right way. Instead of just removing the overdubs und leaving it at that, they remixed it with other existing instruments being pushed to the front to compensate for the missing overdubs. It’s a really cool idea that worked on 80% of the tracks.
@@GeorgiaOverdrive There are overdubs all over this set. A horrible mess. The ‘69 disk is the weakest of all the material. Such a missed opportunity. Again.
Some tracks came out really well. Others were pretty meh. Moody Blue was an improvement. Last Farewell also was very good, as the studio outtake from Jungle Room made this one sound so sparse that it just didn't work without overdubs.

Thank you for the Elvis 👑Memphis CD review. I got my pre-ordered copy from Amazon UK and received it yesterday Friday 9 August 2024. Loving the Elvis CDs and booklet. At the moment it on Amazon UK's No 1 spot on their best selling Classic British Rock chart and the vinyl version is at number 20❤❤.
I'm glad I'm not an Elvis collector, stuff is so expensive but things are also expensive in my hobbies too which are a home gym and golf. A good barbell is over $350 and a good driver in golf is $400-$600 Everything is expensive now a days past the point to where I thought I would ever see it. I never thought a new Chevy blazer would cost $55,500. I used to buy all brand new, was not interested in used stuff but now the principle of paying 2 and 3 times what something is worth to get it brand new has taken over my mind. I refuse to pay $55k for a Chevy blazer and I refuse to pay these prices for new stuff purely on principle, because I know the stuff is not worth it. The prices are just jacked up because people experienced the time when they could not get anything. The time Covid had tons of ships parked off the coast and prices went through the roof and the prices have never gone back down. Business owners saw people would pay anything for what they wanted, so Greed has put us where a chevy blazer cost what a Cadillac cost before Covid.
I listened to parts of various songs on Spotify as I await the arrival of cds and lps. I like these mixes a lot- it makes the original mixes sound “overdone” in comparison. There’s nothing to distract from Elvis’ great vocals.
@@tennesseebrigadeanv1523 It could’ve all fit onto the disks, why songs were omitted, the producer (Ernst Jorgensen) only knows why and it’s believed by the people in the know, it’s personal choice to omit them.
A few thoughts: 1. Where are ‘Rubberneckin’, ‘My Little Friend’, ‘And The Grass Won't Pay No Mind', ‘Sweet Angeline’ and A Little Bit Of Green' ? 2. If you are keeping some songs off the set. Surely, ‘Hey Jude’ ‘If That Isn’t Love and ‘She Wears My Ring’ and ‘Three Corn Patches’ should be omitted? 3. The guitar and piano are out of sync on ‘Suspicious Minds’ 4. The remix of ‘Promised Land’ has the organ high in the mix. Nice to hear in the intro. Bloody annoying throughout though. Burton’s guitar solos have lowered in the mix. In fact he sounds like he’s in the car park. I could go on. But I’ve got things to do 😊

Mixed feelings- Love the packaging and the booklet. Disc 2 was mainly a disappointment. Don't Cry Daddy was terrible overdubbing the vocals. Overall, the sound is great.
I wanted to add this comment for all viewers who have not yet listened to these CDs. I have and unfortunately we have been misled somewhat. The selling point to this box set was that these would be undubbed, stripping away the backup vocals. Like The 2 Nashville Box Sets were....Only one CD is truly undubbed and that is Elvis at American sound studio here. Excluding live concert, the other studio material here is not undubbed. It appears what was done is Elvis's vocals were raised a little with some added echo but you can still hear the backup vocals. Yes we hear Elvis voice clearer than ever but these are not truly undubbed. Big disappointment. I have been so excited! Anticipating hearing the Stax sessions and the jungle room sessions truly undubbed. This is a letdown.

@@Patracat Stick with the American Sound FTD set for the true undubbed masters/mixes. It’s a train wreck and I’m really not sure how this got thru the production line and into the hands of people who don’t know better.
The general consensus is that it is not a very good set and that it has a lot of odd audio issues/errors. The title itself is extremely banal and uninspired. Who come up with that? Jorgensen? And why use Vegas shots for both cover packages? Absolutely bizarre but typical of the Jorgensen era. Plenty of great early ones from Memphis in the '50's [a superior Main St. color shot is somehow deemed only good enough to use on one of the CD wallets, which incidentally, appear to be the wrong way around, if you go by the actual audio content]; the '61 benefit shows and at American Sound in '69, to name just a few. Oh, and the RCA orange label reproductions are becoming very tedious by now.
There are quite a few things wrong with this set, some of which were questioned when it was announced. Why leave off some of the really good tracks from the Back in Memphis album like Inherit The Wind, This Is The Story, And The Grass Won’t Pay No Mind and put on inferior recordings like Hey Jude, From a Jack to a King, Mama Liked the Roses and that damn medley of This Time/Can’t Stop Loving You. Hey Jude was never going to get released with its completely messed up lyrics and was stuck on the shelf and only pulled off when RCA were desperate to get tracks for the Elvis Now album. Don’t Cry Daddy is bizarre and Elvis sounds like he is in an echo chamber. The guitar work on Suspicious Minds seems to be out of sync with the vocals. The bell on the front of Long Black Limousine is gone ruining the overall effect of the song and True Love Travels appears to be in mono. The sheer soulful sound of Stranger in my Own Home Town is completely lost now that the Memphis Horns have been removed. The fact is that Chips Moman had decided that the American ‘69 recordings were made with the idea of having areas in key places that would benefit from overdubs, unlike the Nashville sessions in 1970 which were not recorded in the same way. But now we have a batch of songs that either never got the Matt Ross-Spang treatment or they did and they are stuck on a shelf somewhere, perhaps in readiness for a Memphis Vol 2 release that FTD will release and we will have to pay their high prices to get the remainder of the songs. The booklet is okay, but should have had more pages. 32 is just pathetic and smacks of budget control on the release. Reading lots of comments, there appears to be more fans dissatisfied with this release than satisfied, but no doubt it will get praised through the rafters when it is talked about in Memphis in a few days time when Tom Brown has his usual over the top chat with Ernst. I wonder if members of the audience will be allowed to ask questions like "who came up with the idea of this release and why are so many great tracks missing?" Ernst will probably reply that the included Hey Jude because it is such a well known song and was a massive hit worldwide, but that’s no real reason to include such an inferior rendition of the song on here especially for a mainstream release.
My initial impression listening to the cd set is that the music presented -without overdubs and backing vocals-lacks verve. Apart from the live concert it’s all a bit dull. Don’t Cry Daddy and Suspicious Minds are just weird to listen to. Elvis’ voice is clear as a bell, but the backing lacks dynamism on the majority of tracks. Just my tuppence worth…
Half assed release.. they used AI to extract stereo ...but not to touch the mono sun material (to piggy back off the Beatles release) and give us something new to experience? disappointing. The 69 material is the worst job mixing i have ever heard. Clipping of Elvis' voice, instruments sound out of time, sometimes theres overdubs, sometimes theres not? My money is going towards the guitar man sessions FTD.

What's great about this you get the full concert of the 74 concert at the Mid South Coliseum. The original album was edited.
There’s a legacy version from 2014 that sounds a lot better than the Ross Spang mix.
But subsequent reissues are complete and have been for years!!! 😊

Why does the cd box set have so many more tracks than the vinyl...vinyl is missing properly around 30 tracks compared to the cd box set?
@@jonathankuelske3971 it would take between 10-12 LP records to fit all the songs released on 5 CD’s. That would roughly cost us around $300 or mote.
The cost would be prohibitive not only to buy in a shop but shipping would cost a lot if ordered on the internet.

Mixed feelings- Love the packaging and the booklet. Disc 2 was mainly a disappointment. Don't Cry Daddy was terrible overdubbing the vocals. Overall, the sound is great.
This boxset has so many problems. It is a waste of money.

It's fantastic. It's worth having for the new mixes. They got it right this time.
I wanted to add this comment for all viewers who have not yet listened to these CDs. I have and unfortunately we have been misled somewhat. The selling point to this box set was that these would be undubbed, stripping away the backup vocals. Like The 2 Nashville Box Sets were....Only one CD is truly undubbed and that is Elvis at American sound studio here. Excluding live concert, the other studio material here is not undubbed. It appears what was done is Elvis's vocals were raised a little with some added echo but you can still hear the backup vocals. Yes we hear Elvis voice clearer than ever but these are not truly undubbed. Big disappointment. I have been so excited! Anticipating hearing the Stax sessions and the jungle room sessions truly undubbed. This is a letdown.

Why don´t do it further like the super thing started???? All sessions after 1971 alredy brought - in pure undubbed - AS THE DID BACK THEN IN THE STUDIO!!!! EVERYBODY LOVES/D LOVED IT! New interested people as well as experts or "experts" - I WANT THE ORIGINAL SOUND OF THE STUDIO-WORK as released before so good!!!!! I don´t want NEW SOUNDS! @@Patracat Stick with the American Sound FTD set for the true undubbed masters/mixes. It’s a train wreck and I’m really not sure how this got thru the production line and into the hands of people who don’t know better.

The general consensus is that it is not a very good set and that it has a lot of odd audio issues/errors.
The title itself is extremely banal and uninspired. Who come up with that? Jorgensen?
And why use Vegas shots for both cover packages? Absolutely bizarre but typical of the Jorgensen era.
Plenty of great early ones from Memphis in the '50's [a superior Main St. color shot is somehow deemed only good enough to use on one of the CD wallets, which incidentally, appear to be the wrong way around, if you go by the actual audio content]; the '61 benefit shows and at American Sound in '69, to name just a few.
Oh, and the RCA orange label reproductions are becoming very tedious by now.
There are quite a few things wrong with this set, some of which were questioned when it was announced. Why leave off some of the really good tracks from the Back in Memphis album like Inherit The Wind, This Is The Story, And The Grass Won’t Pay No Mind and put on inferior recordings like Hey Jude, From a Jack to a King, Mama Liked the Roses and that damn medley of This Time/Can’t Stop Loving You. Hey Jude was never going to get released with its completely messed up lyrics and was stuck on the shelf and only pulled off when RCA were desperate to get tracks for the Elvis Now album.
Don’t Cry Daddy is bizarre and Elvis sounds like he is in an echo chamber. The guitar work on Suspicious Minds seems to be out of sync with the vocals. The bell on the front of Long Black Limousine is gone ruining the overall effect of the song and True Love Travels appears to be in mono. The sheer soulful sound of Stranger in my Own Home Town is completely lost now that the Memphis Horns have been removed. The fact is that Chips Moman had decided that the American ‘69 recordings were made with the idea of having areas in key places that would benefit from overdubs, unlike the Nashville sessions in 1970 which were not recorded in the same way.
But now we have a batch of songs that either never got the Matt Ross-Spang treatment or they did and they are stuck on a shelf somewhere, perhaps in readiness for a Memphis Vol 2 release that FTD will release and we will have to pay their high prices to get the remainder of the songs.
The booklet is okay, but should have had more pages. 32 is just pathetic and smacks of budget control on the release. Reading lots of comments, there appears to be more fans dissatisfied with this release than satisfied, but no doubt it will get praised through the rafters when it is talked about in Memphis in a few days time when Tom Brown has his usual over the top chat with Ernst. I wonder if members of the audience will be allowed to ask questions like "who came up with the idea of this release and why are so many great tracks missing?" Ernst will probably reply that the included Hey Jude because it is such a well known song and was a massive hit worldwide, but that’s no real reason to include such an inferior rendition of the song on here especially for a mainstream release.
My initial impression listening to the cd set is that the music presented -without overdubs and backing vocals-lacks verve. Apart from the live concert it’s all a bit dull. Don’t Cry Daddy and Suspicious Minds are just weird to listen to. Elvis’ voice is clear as a bell, but the backing lacks dynamism on the majority of tracks. Just my tuppence worth…

Half assed release.. they used AI to extract stereo ...but not to touch the mono sun material (to piggy back off the Beatles release) and give us something new to experience? disappointing. The 69 material is the worst job mixing i have ever heard. Clipping of Elvis' voice, instruments sound out of time, sometimes theres overdubs, sometimes theres not? My money is going towards the guitar man sessions FTD.
