From what I understand, the interstate numbers start low in the west and end with high in the east to avoid confusion with the US routes. The US routes start with the low numbers in the east and high in the west. Same thing with the interstates going south to north.
dunno if this is a coincidence but the second pic that beaver used just so happens to be a portion of I-172, an infamous interstate on this channel (aside from 180) great video like always keep it up
One reason the interstate system is numbered left to right and south to north is because the old US highways were numbered the opposite. With US 2, US 10, US 20 top to bottom Odd numbers ran east north south US 1 being in the east ,US 101 being in the west.
This won't be the case for long with congress foolishly having I-69 cross I-45, I-55 and, I-65 just so they can have another Canada to Mexico Interstate.
We gotta renumber some interstates tho, I-99 has no business being right there, I-85 is more east-west than north-south and I-30 and 45 are way too short for the multiple of 5 rule
Uh no i85 goes south from Richmond to Atlanta not west. The only reason part goes east west is because it's concurrent with I40 in NC .... But majority is a north-south direction
There's no Interstate 50 because the route would be so close to the old US Highway 50 (Sacramento to Ocean City MD) that people would get confused.
Same with no I-60. Ironic how there was fear of confusion with US Routes and now we have I-41/US 41
Hopefully Arkansas and Oklahoma don’t cheap out on the US 412 upgrade. It could be I-50, fit the grid, and not conflict with US 50.

the interstates like to break the rules... i 85 is east west in my state but Still signed north south.
