  • How U.S. interstate highways are numbered? 🇺🇸 Dive into the fascinating system behind the numbering of U.S. interstate highways. 🚗 Discover how major interstate highways are labeled with two digits divisible by 5. Highways that stretch from east to west end in 0, ranging from I-10 to the longest, I-90. Meanwhile, north-south highways end in 5, with I-5 being a unique case where you can imagine a 0 before the 5. 😱 This clever system ensures easy navigation across the country, similar to how our ancestors navigated by the stars. The farther southwest you are, the lower the highway numbers, and as you move northeast, the numbers get higher. Highways ending in 0 indicate horizontal routes, while those ending in 5 indicate vertical routes. Additionally, the interstate minors, which are branches off the major highways marked with three-digit numbers. The last two digits match the major highway number. If the first digit is even, the branch loops back to the major highway; if it's odd, it doesn't reconnect. 🚀

I’m literally just writing this for study purposes (writing is a way to internalize)
So south west is lower numbers, north east is higher numbers.
Ends in a zero is east-west, ends in a 5 north south.
2 digits is for nation highways or whatever. 3 is for the branches. Odd number means it doesn’t connect back, even means it connects back. The last rep digits match the major highway it branches from

Several interstates are now labeled outside of the 0 or 5 protocol (I-69, I-43, I-57, I-44, among others). What remains the case in nearly all scenarios is that even numbers go East-West, while odds go North-South. And larger numbers are in the North and East, while smaller numbers are South and West.

To simplify: Even numbers run east/west, odd numbers run north/south. Triple digits are loops or spurs. Also, the highway sign telling distance to a city actually denotes distance to a "central point" (often the courthouse). But it's not measured to the city limit. Also, U.S. highways are graduated in miles, there are small mile marker signs you need to take note of (mile 50, then mile 51,mile 52, etc). You can let emergency services or other vehicles traveling with you know EXACTLY where you are! Exit number 53 is AT mile 53- you can tell exactly how far from the exit you are. One more helpful- big highway sign says name of town/city or road exit is for. If the little sign saying "exit 53" is hung toward the left side of that sign, the exit is on your left. If hung toward the right side of that sign, then exit is on your right.
